Eddie, that Basie album behind you has been a staple in my diet forever. In fact, when our teacher took out L'il Darlin' in 1975 i crushed the baritone sax part because i had already been listening to it for 5 years. It became a regular piece for future bands from my school. I was never lucky on blind buys, picking guys i liked (Bud Shank, Chet Baker, etc.) but never getting into them. I love Buddy's Mercy, Mercy, Kenton's Hi-Fi, Woody Herman:1964. My test record wasn't jazz, it was Blondie's Greatest Hits. I bought my equipment at Crazy Eddie's in Brooklyn and that was the record to test the sound systems and it always sounds great. I'm glad to see you making videos. Merry Christmas, Bix lives!

Rudolph, Thanks for watching commenting. Wow, I remember the Crazy Eddie's Audio stores. They were great. I used to just go there to look at all the gear I couldn't afford back then. In the late 80s, I worked for "The Wiz", which I think was run by the cousin of the Crazy Eddie people. I do remember The Crazy Eddie store always had those Verve Japanese reissues really cheap back then. Merry Christmas to you!

Hi Eddie. I have no idea what pressing it is. I am still no aficionado in classic Blue Note pressings. I do know that Classic Records reissued it on 200 gram a few years back. Very killer find Eddie~ Rob/Boston

Cool record label. A lot of different influences can be heard in his solo including his own sound. I can pick out some of Don Menza's marathon solo from Channel One Suite.

I would probably enjoy that LP Eddie if I came across it. My first wife was once a student at the Royal Ballet School in London and I worked for Canada's National Ballet School for about 10 years. I would be very familiar with the music on that. Great to see you again!

@@EddieJazzFan Hi Eddie, I'm so busy that I don't often do KZbin these days but I've always enjoyed the videos that you post. And I'm still so appreciative of that Sony power cable that you once sent to me. Have a good holiday Eddie!

Good evening Eddie. Great to see you again. I would never think to buy something like The Royal Ballet. But after hearing your words on it. I am definitely interested in hearing it. Sounds like the Analog Productions pressing is much better than the CD. Also the horns {woodwinds} sound like they are much warmer on the LP. I simply cannot bank on a CD sounding warm, punchy and clean anymore. Once they started compressing them very heavily I lost interest. No more range. Occasionally I will buy a CD. Awesome comparison Eddie. Hope to see you again soon~ Rob/Boston

Hi Rob, Thanks for stopping by. Yeah, It still surprises me that with all the technology out there, the old school LP is often the better choice. I guess they do the compression on a lot of music today so it sounds good on cell phones, but on regular stereos it sounds poor. Take care Rob!

I can't believe how many of those JJ albums I have (about half)! For me, Ornette. But there is something comforting about Brubeck.

Hey Eddie - it's great to see you again. Great video! I'm a big JJ fan. I like Curtis and Grachan among the ones you have listed, along with Kai and Tommy Dorsey of course. And thanks to a video of yours from a while back I'm now an Urbie Green fan. Bob Brookmeyer is also a favorite. Trombone is one of my favorite instruments...I also like vibraphone a lot, and Fender Rhodes electric piano. Really enjoyed this video!
@EddieJazzFan Жыл бұрын
Hi Randall, I should have left that Urbie Green video up. I have a tendency to re-watch my old videos and think they're bad and delete them LOL. Fender Rhodes piano is one of my favs too. Anything on CTI records that has a Fender Rhodes is always super stuff. Thanks for stopping by!

I like trombone. I have 7 albums with jj on them but none with him as the leader.
@EddieJazzFan Жыл бұрын
I used to play trombone, so I collected a lot over the years. In school as a kid, our marching band playing out in the cold weather was hard, but trombone is the only instrument you could play wearing mittens/gloves!

Good evening Eddie. Nice to see you again so soon. Hmm. My favorite jazz trombonist? First off I am still not well versed in jazz . With that being said. I do know JJ Johnson from the 'great' album that I own called The Great Kai & JJ. There you go. You are showing at the 7:50 mark. I should have known that you would own this one since you are featuring JJ in this video. Would you say that 'The Great Kai & JJ' is their best selling album? I got to grab a copy of that Blue Note reissue for 'The Eminent Jay Jay Johnson Volume 1' that you showed at the beginning. Wow. You filled this one with some dynamite info on each of the JJ albums that you showed. Excellent post Eddie. You continue to enhance my continued appreciation for jazz~ Rob/Boston

Glad you liked the video Rob. It's nice to have so many re-issues available these days, I remember growing up in the 70 where it was really hard to find jazz, even common albums from Miles Davis and others.

Eddie, like so many other musicians, you may never have heard of Bobby Pratt. Bobby was the house piano player at Jimmy Ryan's with Roy Eldridge for decades. But his first love was trombone. There are so many great musicians whose names we'll never know. And yes, your review is a lot of fun. I enjoy all your stuff.

Good seeing you Eddie! I'm not a big believer in the sonic benefits of heavy vinyl, but that doesn't mean I don't like it. I would rather a thin record with virgin vinyl than something heavy with regrind, which is exactly what Dynaflex did. I think 130-150 is the sweet spot, but I certainly like 180-200 as well.
@EddieJazzFan3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the thicker vinyl isn't always a guarantee that it will sound good. It all depends on the mastering and pressing quality. Sometimes the heavy vinyl will be more forgiving to scratches being audible, but not all the time.

Hello there Eddie. Man its good to see you again. I appreciated your honesty on Ella's self titled 'Ella' album. {smile} You know I never thought to get the proper weight on any of my albums. That's all I know is the reissues are supposed to weight 130, 150, 180 and 200 grams. <> Those Electra samplers are heavy records. <> Wow, that Columbia white label promo weighed more than some of the 200 gram reissues of nowadays. Here I am thinking that they just started pressing 200 gram albums a few years ago to enhance sound quality. I guess that old saying is true. There is nothing new under the sun. Always good to see you back. The best to you and more all through this new year Ed~ Rob/Boston
