Hello. And thank you first and foremost from Western Australia. I am facing double mastectomy and was looking at implants but now so much talk about BII, Do you have any troubles or comments and did you get information from the start. I honest don’t know anyone with breast implants personally and we are always a few years behind the US on topics and information and I think due to smaller population. Also scared of capsular contracture, I’m trying to get better and scared I might make matters worse. I too am also very active with weight training and running and didn’t know if implants weigh more and feel cold and generally wonder if you get use to them.
@breast-cancer-rehab3 күн бұрын
I haven't had any issues with BII. I was ok with the risk - I knew I wanted breasts and I wasn't really a candidate for other types of reconstruction. I had capsular contraction when I had tissue expanders, but that was from radiation. Since I had my exchange surgery (tissue expanders out, implants in) I haven't had any issues with capsular contracture. The most challenging part of implants for me personally is that they're under the chest muscle (subpectoral) - animation deformity and reduced pec muscle function. Despite this, I would still choose implants if I had to make the decision over again.

Dear Erika! I have another important question, regarding something that causes me great fear! How can I prevent the radiation from damaging the heart, from causing pericarditis? I am terribly afraid of this, as well as other things, such as nerve damage and the like, but perhaps I fear heart damage the most. Did you have radiation on both sides, including the left side? Which part of your breast was the surgical incision made? Did you not develop a fever, did you not have sharp, stabbing chest pain, cough, or other symptoms that could be symptoms of pericarditis? Did you have to have an MRI to see if the radiation caused such problems? Maybe if an infection develops due to a skin burn wound, can that also cause pericarditis? It is inherently more dangerous for me, because I have an autoimmune thyroid disease. Please write what you know about this in an answer as soon as possible. Thank you very much in advance. Unfortunately, it is tomorrow, Nov. 26. I have to go to my first meeting around noon. I don't know what it will be about, I'm worried that I'll have to make a decision right away. I hope what I wrote is understandable, because unfortunately I don't speak English, I can only write with Google Translate, which doesn't translate very well.

After 6 months of radiation on my left breast , recently I’m experiencing pain in my left rib exactly under my breast. Does anyone experience such a thing? My oncologist said it happens for some patients. But sometimes it’s unbearable.
@breast-cancer-rehab3 күн бұрын
I have a few ribs on my radiated side that are quite sensitive - more towards the midline. I may have more that are affected centrally but can't feel them under implants. I've had a few patients with this too. Not much you can do for that but you can address any soft tissue tenderness in that area, which can make the rib pain feel worse. Look for the self-massage and cupping videos in the Radiation Playlist - kzbin.info/aero/PLALVgJH_QhhiBu-YSGlOfhQvdYgMuWWOU&si=B3wCL5on30zW9H44

I have a question for you. 3 weeks ago I got double mastectomy and tissue expanders. 3 weeks and still my sides hurt with any slight attempt to sleep on side even a little. I sleep in a recliner. Part of my prior breasts were kept for later. Did you have pain on the sides? My dr said normal but that was in the beginning. They think I should be able to sleep in bed. For fear of turning on my side I don’t. I tried pain was very bad when I accidentally went in my side. Do I have to wait for the exchange surgery to sleep in bed again!
@breast-cancer-rehab9 күн бұрын
I’m not exactly sure what you mean when you said “part of my prior breasts were kept for later“ I’m also curious if your expanders are over or under the muscle. I did have discomfort on my sides, but definitely not the intensity that you’re describing. I started getting treatment pretty quickly (at one week post-surgery) and realized how much of the pain that I was experiencing was compensation related. There was so much tension in all of the surrounding muscles so any pain that I was experiencing wasn’t just from the incisions or what was done in surgery. If you have the resources, it would be helpful to have an assessment and then treatment from someone who works with breast cancer patients. This could be a physiotherapist or massage therapist. I’m not sure if you saw my other video on tips to reduce pain with tissue expanders - kzbin.info/www/bejne/fpqvcpewpcSihdE. Give these strategies a go and see which ones work best to settle things down. You’ll notice that movement is a common theme for the strategies. Since your medical team doesn’t have any concerns about you transitioning back to bed, you can take a more active approach. You definitely don’t need to wait until your exchange surgery to sleep in bed again! Hope that helps.

Did you see the full length video for cording strategies? - kzbin.info/www/bejne/nILZhGuKbq52mqs. You could do the self-massage of the cord and focus on shoulder motion within the limits of your surgeon’s recommendation for this stage. Once you get clearance (few weeks?) you could add in the nerve glides, scar massage, and deeper stretches.

It’s really frustrating because I had a lumpectomy and radiation treatment for DCIS. If I had known more about radiation fibrosis, I may have decided to do a mastectomy instead (in which case I would not have needed radiation).
@breast-cancer-rehab12 күн бұрын
Yes, it’s definitely easier to make decisions in retrospect! With DCIS a mastectomy would have changed the need for radiation. My cancer was stage 2 so I ended up having radiation even though I had a mastectomy. I didn’t really know what to expect with radiation fibrosis and the symptoms can be significant both short-term and long-term, which I’m assuming you’re experiencing.

And for your time educating us.

I wasn’t sure how to do a video accommodating for all the different ranges of experience using weights. Given that you’re on an AI, my recent video on rucking for improving bone density would be a good one to watch and try - kzbin.info/www/bejne/hp7Nn6ygZqiMqrc

I follow a KZbin- Heather Robertson. She has HIIT but I’m wanting to target my potential bone loss of 10-13% on Letrozole. I read about the Liftmor study and realize I need to go heavier, I did watch your video on rucking strapping a weighted backpack, I love the vest! Thank you for sharing. I am stage 2a, 1.2cm IDC and 1 out of 5 positive SLNs, oncotyping score of 17. I go into my oncologist in a few days. I don’t want radiation bc I thought that meant I could not have an implant on the radiated side. This video gives me hope that I can. I had a DMX/SLN bx 3 weeks ago with tissue expanders and alloderm placed at the time of the DMX. I am not sure if I will need chemo or not. Radiation scares me so much. I already have cording on the cancer side post SLNB and it’s painful. I will be cleared for PT on Monday.

Yes, implants are an option if you require radiation. It's helpful that you already have tissue expanders as the issue with radiation is that you can't really stretch radiated skin. Good luck! Thank you, I downloaded the Stretching Guide! By the way, have you done any weight training as part of your maintenance program? I’m 69 yrs old, had my DMX on 30 Jan 2024. I’m asking because I noticed that my boobs hid any weight gained, and now since my DMX, I noticed that I have a little belly! Additionally, I take Anastrozole (Arimidex), which is known to increase blood pressure, and weight gain, so I started intermittent fasting, along with DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) to counter both blood pressure and weight gain. Nevertheless, I still want to increase my chest muscles and abdominal muscles because I don’t want to always have to wear protheses. Anyway, your thoughts would be appreciated! Thank you, Scipia
@breast-cancer-rehab26 күн бұрын
That’s great you got the stretching guide - hope it helps! Yes, I do weight training as a part of my maintenance program. I do CrossFit 5x per week. I was going to do a video at some point on strength training after breast cancer. To get an idea of some of the things that I do I made 2 videos of the exercises that I did after my double mastectomy - (0-6 weeks) kzbin.info/www/bejne/qmnFdKJuhKuGis0; (7-12 weeks) kzbin.info/www/bejne/hXTZip9jodF9ZtE. I’ve increased the weights significantly since then but it gives a general idea. I’ve heard other women say the same thing after flat closure - that their body contour looks different with different proportions post-mastectomy. Doing more strength training will help with body weight and changing your chest/shoulder contour.

@ Thank you for your input! Sounds like I’m on the right path! You definitely lift more than I would ever have thought of lifting! Kudos! Additionally, I never did Cross-Fit! I had the opportunity when I was n the military, but it looked like more of a “time commitment” requirement that I just didn’t have at the time! However, I have consistently done free weights, weight machines, TRX, resistance bands, which I incorporate into my cardio (tennis, cycling, golfing-riding & walking, and running-3 to 5 miles at one to two times/week). Nevertheless, looks like I need to add barbells now to my workout equation! Lastly, I must commend you for documenting your journey! I have “sort of” been documenting my journey, but not to your detail. I’ll follow your lead on this because I now see benefits, particularly for “looking in the rearview mirror” i.e., accomplishments, change up of workout routines (what’s worked vs what hasn’t worked). By the way, I’m 69 yrs old, and realize that working out is now a “forever regimen!” Do you think as you age that you will change your workout routine? Thanks again! Scipia
@breast-cancer-rehab23 күн бұрын
Scipia, it sounds like you’re doing lots of the right things! Every decade that we’re older weightlifting becomes even more important. You don’t necessarily need to workout with a barbell, dumbbells work great too. I do think that my routine will change overtime. I already make some modifications post-surgery and radiation to some of the movements we do in CrossFit. You’re right, I documented my journey in quite a bit of detail. The ironic thing is that I never planned on sharing it!
