So many commenters saying “take it to the machine shop and do it the right way!” A machine shop isn’t some magical place in a magical forest where parts magically get renewed, in fact so many things come back from “machine shops” all jacked up these days, you might be better off doing it yourself until you find a shop you can trust and even then it cost an arm and a dick because people just replace parts and a machinist is so specialized now. This video was made 6yrs ago, price the machine shop today and you’ll really be ready to see what can be done at home! This is good info for when you don’t have a choice because your in a remote area or in a place where machinists are far and few. Anyhow, the only thing i would add is maybe a step to wipe the burrs in the direction of spin and yes, if you have the ability, then mic the journals before and after or at least plastigage it and check clearances. Nothing wrong with this if you take your time and use your head 👍

DIY guys can call this whatever they want. No engine machinist is going to call this a hone job. This is nothing more than deglazing. A hone job removes material and straightens bores. This does not.

Hey man I hate to tell you but your not reaming the ridge from the ring wear..your just cleaning the carbon.. reaming actually cuts metal..you could do this in many other ways

The risk of not flushing air from the system has nothing to do with wear and tear on the starter motor or battery. It's the risk of damage to the high pressure fuel pump downstream of the filter, which is not designed to deal with entrained air.

I turkey hunt with mine, added a Jebs. 660 headhunter choke tube, and it handles every turkey load fine. I've patterned alot of different ones with no problems, including TSS. Going to add a Meadow creek mount and a red dot.

You were using a reamer that spreads out down in the bore and the cutter comes up as you turn it on its real fine thread center bolt. That kind works great if you have flat top pistons to set the tool base on to make sure it's in line with the bore. If you have dome top pistons or have knocked the pistons on out, then that type cutter is a pain in the ass to get lined up. In that case you need a Lisle 36500 reamer that has 3 pieces that expand in the cylinder, 2 with rollers on them and one with a cutter. You just tighten the center bolt to expand the 3 pieces to get some tension in the bore, and then turn the whole thing with the outer larger hex. Keeping pressure on the tool to keep the 3 ears that hang over the top and ride on the block surface where the head gasket sits.

couldnt u tape off the cylinder right under the ridge, then take some 220 grit wet sand paper and go around the ridge until its somewhat smooth.. im thinking once the tri stone goes in, it should round out the ridge and let the hone do its thing?
@kevindiy81692 жыл бұрын
I'm sure you could us sand paper. 220+ grit. Just be careful not to remove metal from cylinder. I just found it easier to use some razor blades since I had several packs on hand.

So many comments from people that never did enough engines. Cast rings are very forgiving. My grandma could hone a cylinder and it would turn out just fine with cast rings. When you build a bomber race cheap claimer engine, you want everything loose. Now if you are building a high mileage engine you want 250,000 miles out of it, it's put together completely different.

I don't believe you are reaming the ridge caused by ring wear in the top of the cylinders you are just removing carbon. When ridge reaming is required there is metal that needs to be removed a razor blade won't do that.

Ball hone is the best.
@bryangillis51832 жыл бұрын
Ball hone isn’t best at all. Ball hone will hide defects in the cylinder wall that a flat stone will reveal. The only time to use a ball hone is when you know 100% sure after measuring your cylinder walls are straight and don’t have waves in them or big gouges. A flat stone hone is the best tool for home use although his technique is wrong. The up and down motion should be faster as well as the rpm. Watch any hone machine in a machine shop and you’ll see the difference.

All of these DIY "hone" gadgets don't hone. They just deglaze.

@@bryangillis5183what' about a block with very low mileage like under 5000?? It shouldn't need boring out should it? I fucked up and purchased a new GM 350 vortec block with dished Pistons and I wish to install flat top pistons without any machine work

This is great advice. I have a very thin ridge in an old SBC... mostly carbon. I was going to get a ridge reamer, but this just talked me out of it. 9x outta 10, or better, when I think I can, I can... ...meaning something like your common sense approach is usually better. I've read or viewed too much on the disaster side of using a ridge reamer vs. expected results. Thanks for this!!!

Dont listen to the nay sayers. Some of these people forget that the entire point is to do this on a budget, not perfection. It wont be perfect but the whole point of honing is to create a rough surface so the rings and the walls grind themselves perfect in due time and use. Good work for 20 bucks.
