Is there any hope that additional conversions be done or are Rocket Engineering and JetProp defunct?

150-200lb ft only equates to 4lbs an hour? I find that surprising to be honest. I would think it would be more significant than that. 4lbs an hour from what baseline? Edit: Whoops, I misheard. 4 gallons an hour. Nevermind.

One of the most important things when comparing a JetProp to a Meridian is the lower cost of maintenance. Since the airframe was not initially certified as a turboprop, the inspection requirements are the same as the Malibu. I own a TBM 700 and could afford the airplane but what makes it such a luxury is the high cost of maintenance. A JetProp would be about half the cost. I’m thinking about it just for that reason. The TBM is a solid 35-40kts faster but uses ten gph more so the range is about the same. It also maxes out at FL310 which can be a real asset for getting over more weather. These features cost about another $30K a year in maintenance and fuel over the JetProp.

Is it so much less expensive then a comparable TBM that would make it worth it?

fuzzyjax just depends on how much money you have:). Outside of the outright purchase price the JetProp is far cheaper to operate.

So what's the point of a large single engine turboprop if you cant' carry anyone or anything?
@MrCannonls5 жыл бұрын
Kyle, being able to climb out of the weather and cruise at 27,000 feet at 260+ kts burning 30 GPH of jetfuel is pretty amazing. Also, compare the reliability of a turboprop vs a piston. It’s in a new league altogether.
@kylegoodman51965 жыл бұрын
@@MrCannonls Yeah but by that point why do it a Malibu and just get a Turboprop conversion of a Bonanza? What I question is why would you bother with this when you can't carry anyone or anything with full fuel.
@MrCannonls5 жыл бұрын
Kyle Goodman. If your mission is to carry a few people over long distances, the JetProp would be a poor choice. But to move pilot and 1 passenger quickly, safely, out of the weather, over long distances, and with low hourly costs, the jetprop is top of its class. If you need to carry more weight and are ok with higher operational costs, just get a Meridian. As for the bonanza conversions, I don’t know their stats so I can’t comment. Just that I’ve seen conversions without pressurized cabins, and that doesn’t make sense to me as the turboprops find their efficiencies up high.

@georgebanker26695 жыл бұрын
Cannon, when watching the actual start it seemed that the ITT needle was climbing quit rapidly. So rapidly in fact that there did not seem to be time to catch a hot start before an exceedance occurred unless the pilot had razor sharp reflexes. Is that the case or does it just appear that my due to the camera angle? Thanks for posting.
@georgebanker26695 жыл бұрын
Don't you have to control the prop on the Jetprop? It so that would be another item to add to the workload.
@MrCannonls5 жыл бұрын
You can control it if you want, but in normal operation you simply feather before shutdown and take it out of feather before startup. This arrangement allows the prop to be feathered without shutting down the engine. That allows an idling engine without prop wash, which is not the case with the meridian. This is nice when starting with a GPU or when you’re offloading passengers or baggage without shutting down the engine.

You'd have to cut back to 400 mile legs with more people. One refuel to Telluride, two to California. If you are thinking commercial, well pony up for the TBM. Smooth power, more of it, extreme reliability, less maintenence. Reliability and power. That is worth it...... if you can afford it.

Great video.
@davidbooth46776 жыл бұрын
Whats the best way to prevent a hot start on a quick turnaround? Like a cross country flight in the south where your just stopping to refuel. Do you just keep the starter engaged longer when starting waiting for the ITT's to cool? I feel like the starter will be engaged for longer than 30 seconds before NG stabilizes trying to allow the ITTs to cool to below 130 before introducing the fuel.
@rainerzufall6895 жыл бұрын
"where you are stopping for fuel"
@dustyrideretc5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, motoring the starter a little longer to bring down the ITTs a bit will work. Having a GPU-assisted start will typically let you get a higher Ng, bring down ITTs, and give you a cooler start overall.

Ju Teint. The startup procedure certainly is complicated. After that it’s pretty standard. Watch your ITT and push forward to go faster.
@rainerzufall6895 жыл бұрын
Why is it complicated? I mean he said a lot about it but that is a good thing and makes it easier to understand. You have a few steps to follow (and monitor) and the turbine is running. When wrestling with piston engines you still have several steps to follow and you then need a feeling/knowledge of what to do if the engine doesn't start. I see a lot of guys cranking their engines until they cry for mercy while I am doing my preflight. With the plane I know I only need 1 or 2 seconds to start normally but I still would like to just turn the starter on give it some fuel after stabilizing on a certain percentage and watch ITT and that's basically it. Works every time as long as the battery is ok.
