I feel like the real inside joke behind much of Kaufman's later stuff was that it was tedious to watch and he was manipulating everyone to jump on the bandwagon and claim it was brilliant.

It's almost like the joke was for him to be as UNFUNNY as possible and then wait for all the dopes in the audience to FAKE laugh and call it "brilliant". It's one of the finest examples of The Emperor's New Clothes in modern history.
