Mike Burrows was one of many who understood the benefits of increased diameter tubing for bicycles. Double the diameter equals quadruple the stiffness. At the same time, you can make the walls thinner and end up with a lighter frame. This is why modern frames, especially aluminium frames, tend to be oversized. AL is around one third as stiff as steel, so one inch diameter tubes would have to be solid so as not to bend, and thus heavier.

@@Velocipedium That's great news- many thanks for replying. I did wonder as I realise they aren't super compact and some bus drivers can be a bit stroppy over what you are taking on the bus. Why would you apply brand new decals on this old crappy looking frame? I see cans of paint in the background so it is completely not clear to me why you wouldn't have sanded it down and repainted BEFORE applying the stickers. It would have been a really nice restoration then.
@andywalker758220 күн бұрын
Great name! Rowan does explain his thinking about it in the video, to be fair. He did sand down the paintwork before this video was shot.
@Velocipedium20 күн бұрын
Have you seen the earlier videos on this bike? You need context. It’s not a restoration, it’s a fun little project which I want to retain its patina. As I said in the video, I became a bit bored with endless repaints which lacked their original character afterwards. This is a bit of fun on a £20 wreck that needed to be revived. That paint job is most of its charm, for me. And we do like a Jensen-Healey here. I have an original sales brochure somewhere.

Great video! I'm about to get some new stickers for a 1966 Raleigh RSW Compact that i got a few days ago and i'm going to use the method that you use for your stickers on this frame when installing them. My bike is all original and have some surface rust and some chipped paint but i'm going to keep as it is because i like the patina of the original paint. The stickers you put on this Norman bike looks great and i love that you have not repainted the frame! 😊

Hello, I’m José from Costa Rica, and bought a bicycle at a flea market. On the front it has a plate that says JC HIGGINS made in England by Sears Co. On the rear tire of the Sturmey Archer it says AW 55 5, on the Frame it says H58459. I would like to Know if it is Authentic English and what YEAR it was made. I paid only $5 for this bicycle of three speed . I just got. Home, put oil in it, checked the air in the tires, and went for a ride on the park. It has Original paint and is in perfect condition. Thanks for yours Videos !

Wonderful views of Port Sunlight--unknown to me till now. The bike's history (dare I say "provenance"?) was fascinating and a tribute to your years of experience. Its resemblance to the Dawes Galaxy is definite. Indeed, the entire geometry looks very similar to my own '72 Galaxy, although the lugs are different and resemble the Nervex style I have on a Nishiki from the '80s (and probably a good many others). I sincerely hope the Ian May rides as well as the Dawes and as comfortably--a bike they will have to pry from my cold, dead hands.

@@Velocipedium It's funny you mentioned the Randonneur near the end, as I literally just finished a rebuild of one that I got as a rather tatty frame and gave a strip and re-paint. I had planned to use v-brakes but when I tried to mount them it just didn't seem right, so put cantis back on - and honestly I'd forgotten just how good they can be. It's such a lovely ride on the lanes, I feel like I'm sitting "in" the bike rather than on it if that makes sense. Hard to describe but it really feels "right" in an alive/springy but controlled sort of way.
@kyle895225 күн бұрын
On the other hand, v-brakes are capable of braking. That's not a quality often found in cantilevers
@bigangus359025 күн бұрын
@@kyle8952 I see that joked about on the internet a lot but it isn't true - well set up cantis with good levers are excellent brakes. Just get the straddle wire low enough and there's all the power you need. v-brakes are powerful but don't always modulate well and can snatch a bit.

What a lovely tribute to the late Ian May. Very sad he died so young, but it's hard to find online an owner of an Ian May bike who isn't utterly in love with it. I like your theory about Dave Lloyd's involvement as many of his frames seem to have those distinctive spear point lugs. There's a classy bike underneath all those accessories. The Tonard rack is fine, but on the wrong bike.

Useful video, I volunteer at a bike workshop in Brighton, someone brought in a Pashley with a front rod brake which was catching the rim and not set up correct. I did the best I could without having ever worked on one before!. Could have watched this first I guess. Got the brakes working, but the blocks were slightly sticking out the side of the rim, seemed difficult to get them further in, the brackets on the forks did not rotate easily due to the shape of the fork legs.
