I'm just a little underwhelmed by a man who lived for his vanity. His own confession about valuing world travelling over his own family... wow, so "important" to teach us how to think. Really? Nah, just a man. It's silly to raise a cultural "news reporter" to a level you yourself won't attempt to reach or understand. Sure, he's got amazing guitar skills, but really, will you let Bruce teach you how to feel "important" for what you think, even though it's not your own thought, but an echo chamber? Sorry to burst your celebrity worship bubble, but not sorry. "Call it Democracy" is actually AGAINST these contemporary U.S. Democrats... Are you listening? I hope he finds his way back to Jesus.

Loved discovering this show - I have seen 'Bruce' in a solo gig twice, first time at Tweed Heads NSW RSL club in early 1980s, audience of maybe 120 in a small auditorium, what a show it was ! Maybe a decade later his show at the Palaise Theater in St Kilda Melbourne, a huge fantastic Art Deco Audtitorium, full house of 'Bruce' fans. My seat was not far from the stage, early on he asked for requests - I screamed ' Creation Dream'...to my surprise he heard me and said, hmmmm good one, not sure if I remember it to which I said ( but he did not hear me ) ' I can show you', cause it is one of his I play .....anyway, the look on the faces of near by patrons was priceless - they were all going..what!! who are you - are you famous... of course I'm not, just another punter who learnt to finger pick, based on his style . What a moment in the sun it was. Anyway, he did remember it and played far better than I ever could hehe.

What a "SHITTY" audience. I remember playing the coffee house circuit in Chicago late 1970's as warm up act for Steve Goodman and John Prine and occasionally you just get these dead audiences. My job was to warm them up but sometimes they was no life out there in the seats. I would just cut my act short. Felt sorry for Bruce a big big star coming to the end of his road with these Pegasus assholes.

When the announcer inntroduced Bruce as a poet...that's no lie. Bruce has written songs like no other. The way he takes words puts them together to tell his story is poetry at it's best. Listen to, "Child of the Wind." Then to top it off, Bruce plays guitar so effortlessly that you may miss how difficult and technical his playing really is. Now that's an artist a musical genius. I've been a fan for 35+ years. I thank you Bruce Cockburn you've helped me thru some tough times. Lovenlight

Bruce does anyone ever hear the songwriters song if it falls in the forest? You will never hear unless you care. You will never care unless you are willing to hear. How the author longed for you to come yet you had other plans. Does anyone hear the songwriters song if it falls on deaf ears?

Bruce has had such influence in my art, and in my life, in my politics, and how I comport myself. I first heard his music in 1979, he’s had my rapt attention ever since. He’s always been this amazing mentor, and I don’t actually ‘know’ Bruce. I’ve met him quite a few times. But he won’t remember my name. Lol! He’s such a deep and wonderful artist, and a ‘real’ Christian. I love the guy so much. His life is worthy of emulation.

How phenomenal is this man and musician!! ; i could listen to Bruce all day long, and learn!! Bruce himself the unsung hero, yet highly honored Canadian (Order of Canada); Champion for the advocacy for human rights, the marginalized & the environment ; highly gifted & talented singer songwriter, yet somehow underappreciated on the world stage.

his growling, political soapbox numbers are grating but the others are good. the lefty snarlers are like car stickers - heartbreakingly impotent and serving only to virtue signal.

Some political numbers do wear out quickly.....like stand up jokes, comedy sketches etc......but he has written political songs that do stand the test of time....perhaps your own political viewpoints cloud your vision ?
@loontil

walnot dlrorah perhaps. It's just the impotence of it - at the end of the day you feel like he's just virtue signalling :: "I hate this boogeyman because I'm so saintly". It's not going to change anything.

This is the same critique lobbed at Folk music for almost a century now. Topical songs are a strong vein of the genre. While public attitudes toward it drive the form underground for a few years, it lasts nonetheless and still attracts new adherents (see Rhianna Giddons today.)

Some of his snarlier numbers are just beautiful musically, or funny or sadly, still relevant. Perhaps why he still plays them and often also works on related causes .
