Orecheomis Mozambiqus, not a tilapia, blue kurper we call them up north, well done, release them, on the endangered list

Mozambique Tilapia is what they are called in Natal. Definately a Tilapia. Scientific name Tilapia comes from old sotho/tswana etc word tlaphe meaning fish.... Also sometimes called bream colloquially . So not only called kurper meneer.

Not realy on the endangered list. Plenty small ones in Albert falls. So eat one or... Very tasty. Best freshwater fish around.... Besides bluegill maybe.

Hi, this was at the campsite, closer to the end. Just after the building on the left of the road. Another good spot is at Eikerdal, on the left of the broken slipway. Tight Lines!

Fished my KZN trials there many years ago and fished there regularly since. The dam can treat you like a king and sometimes it can shut down on you.

Aye shame man, that dam is not what it used to be...I remember fishing there as a little boy 30 years ago..Plain brown bread and we used to catch 2 at once no bomb or floats or anything else..sigh..

You guys should of used the carp heads for barber. There is huge barber in that dam. Worked in Winterton for 8 years. Caught big barbers there with carp or scally heads. There is huge carp to, but unfortunately to many small fish.

Thanks for the comment. We did try the carp heads as well as fillets, unfortunately the rods sat without a bite for the whole trip. We will definitely be back to give the barble another go!
