I believe that OPL3 has the ability to do better than this, and the devs who worked on this port were not at least given SMPS or they do not know how to use it's maximum potential (Since it's 4 OP so there's a probability it can rival the OPN-C)
@OPL3music4 күн бұрын
For compatibility reasons, this soundtrack uses MIDI output. It was also released in 1997, and at that point FM synthesis chips were already on the way out. That's why it barely even taps OPL3's potential, there just wasn't much value.

In my mind, this songs actually sounds better than OPL3 than Midi. But then again, I'm one of those people who usually prefers Adlib over MIDI anyway.

Wouldn't be cool if I could use an alternative soundtrack in ogg fomat, so I can work around the midi music not playing in Linux. If it was possible for this game and the sequel, I'd be totally be on board doing it.
@OPL3musicАй бұрын
Actually, you can get the emulated OPL music working on Linux! It's not very hard, just poorly documented. All you need is a sound font installed and a few parameters set in WINE, if I recall correctly.
@Cyberbrickmaster1986Ай бұрын
@@OPL3music Is it possible to do that through Winetricks?
@OPL3musicАй бұрын
I didn't use Winetricks, so I don't know if that will be any help. What I did was....I downloaded an OPL3 sound font. I set up Fluidsynth, and started it using the sountfont. Then I can start Eggbert in Wine, and hear MIDI OPL3 music. This should also affect other MIDI output, so hypothetically it will work on other games.

How is it possible for it to sound more primitive than opn2? Isn't OPL3 supposed to be superior?
@OPL3musicАй бұрын
For compatibility reasons, this game uses MIDI output for the music. That way, it will play on any device, regardless of whether it has the correct hardware or not. The reason for the "Primitive" sound, is that the instrument bank is limited to just the preset instruments, which tend to sound a bit "thin". On a technical level, OPL3 is capable of some pretty insane stuff. The first thing that comes to my mind is a cover of Bad Apple on OPL3, but there are many many more examples. And most people don't use 4op mode, which adds adds even more sound capability.
@mikeb31722 ай бұрын
So basically a recap makes them all sound the same
@OPL3music2 ай бұрын
For this song in particular, most of the differences are in the highs and require headphones to hear. There are better tracks to showcase the differences, this one is a good example of how similar they can sound.
@cakeash2 ай бұрын
do the instruments randomly switch between left and right audio ?
@NAB6222 ай бұрын
Yep! It's actually a limitation of the hardware. OPL3 can only pan hard left, center, and hard right. So if the MIDI is changing a pan value during playback, OPL3 will have an audible jump each time the value crosses a certain threshold. Just an artifact of the times!

This is the version I used to remember! I've been looking for this game and music for so long. All around KZbin I listen to a different music for this game, why? What's the difference?
@OPL3music2 ай бұрын
This recording is played on a Sound Blaster 16, with an OPL3 synthesizer chip on it. The unique sound is from the default instruments used for the MIDI output. If you're looking for any music using this sound, add OPL3 to the search term and you should find it easily.

Didn't the PC collection use the prototype music for knuckles theme or something like that?
@OPL3music3 ай бұрын
It does! The PC version actually contains both Knuckles themes. S3&K and S&K use this theme, and only S3 uses the prototype one. So if you want the prototype one, look under Sonic 3 and you should find it. :)

For years I have been infatuated with the image used in this playlist. The dark blue purple-ish glow around the OPL, the starry backdrop, the sphere with logo on top. Combined with the music it creates an impressive vibe, like you've stepped inside a 90's computer with all its fanciness and charm. Shrouded in darkness and deep color, creates a strong nostalgic feeling despite the fact I didn't have a ton of experience with Windows XP. I realize this is random but it's been on my mind so long.
@OPL3music3 ай бұрын
Haha, I guess it does sort of herald back to the XP era visually, although I always seek to encapsulate the 90s to some extent. I really wanted to make the sphere spin, but unfortunately that was way beyond my ability at the time. I have a lot of nostalgia for this soundtrack, so I wanted to give the visuals some extra effort. From a technical standpoint it is also a VERY well made soundtrack. The tracks are good, the layered instruments and added echo sound superb, the hacked-in portamento works exactly as intended, and the usage of MIDI instruments added a certain charm to it. The only thing bad about it is the wrong notes in various tracks. I'm glad you're enjoying it!

Did you guys ever figure out the hidden sequence? If you fail a certain sequence of grocery items in a row, Mavis Beacon walks up from the other side of the conveyor belt, you just see her grocery apron and "Mavis" name tag, and she holds up a sign saying "you're fired", and then the game reboots. It was supposed to be a joke amongst the programmers that never got removed because they were rushing to release it.

Good comparison but unfortunate for my childhood OPL chips sound like circular saws and whoopie cushions to me. I should have gotten an Amiga :). There are good Yamaha chips too, and even YM2612 (Sega Genesis) sounds better to me despite sample rate etc. Competing standards probably hindered quality on DOS games (and despite being a standard, General MIDI was just another thing to account for when it first came out). The clean reproduction of simple FM brings out its shortcomings--OPL1 had more charm at least. Amiga equivalents of the same games were better by far (vs DOS or NES). I'm researching to make retro synth music, so I wandered here.

Tbh... people must understand how limited tech was and how the megadrive was actually miles ahead of the nes and pc. the reason the megadrive sounds better than this pc opl midis is because it has 2 dedicated sound chips, an 8bit psg and a custom yamaha fm synthesizer with a single sample channel.

I actually like this more than the original version used. The 4 key changes really make it feel interesting! Sad it was scrapped from the original before release. This is almost as good as the Prototype, but most people likely heard it via GM, so people likely hated it. The only major downgrade is the percussion. It lacks that punch that was in said prototype. Still, it’s damn good here!
