Great Video ! One benefit of a stove is that "A Stove uses one half the wood of an open Campfire" ! Also the Bad News is that you can get the stove in Titanium ($$.$$) as I did... tjl

I've been using an Opinel No. 9 carbon steel for ages, and it has never let me down. It's easy to keep razor-sharp and a little drop of oil now and then will keep corrosion at bay.

I tested this out this past weekend, some positives I have with this: Very compact and lightweight for the size of the fire it allows. Large surface area to cook on, I used a 12" skillet with no rack and had no problems resting it on the grill. Easy to move slowly to adjust for wind capture, but I did accidentally dump my coals when I lifted one leg too high. Very stable when legs are opened fully. Convenient rack hook tool, but I used tongs instead. some negatives I have with this: I feel there should be some ventilation on the sides other than the 8 holes. In some wind, the flames shoot out the holes. It bent "overloading" this above the arches for high flames. As expected, easily bent back flat when cooled. The case is very snug, almost ripping the seams. It would be nice to lock legs during use.

They have a fatal flaw though. The aluminum plate only contacts the material on two of the riveted sides. But through the center. It’s about 1/8” give or take raised. Least on the one I got years ago. An seems like paleohikerMD on KZbin had just the same issue. That’s why his burned through the bottom on a msr stove. There’s no heat transfer happening in the center so there’s nowhere for the heat to go. Except heating the plate until it warms or makes a hole. The little contact on two sides. Just isn’t enough to stop that from happening. Han it been pulled tight before the plates were attached it probably would have been fine. Or if they had placed a center rivet. It would’ve alleviated that problem. So these things have that one major design flaw. I stumbled across his video today and rewatched it. An dug mine up and that’s what I had going on with it. An it was one of the early ones. So I’m sure many others were the same way. And looking at their site. They most likely never changed that issue

A knife, Bic lighter, farro rod, match box and match book. I opted out of magnesium block and replaced it with a windproof lighter like bic ez reach, butane lighter, rope lighter. I took the wax sting out of fire cord and put it in a tube, Alcohol swabs, waxed paper from a roll of stickers. I stuffed cotton balls into a bubble tea strew. Zip fire starter. tea light.

I still remember my first visit to the Granite Falls fish ladder 67 years ago, so I was naturally attracted to the title of this video to see the Granite Falls fish ladder once again. I am disappointed that the cameraman FORGOT to film the granite falls FISH LADDER.

They are both super great knives. However, my preference is their tinier sibling, Mora Clipper. And I literally can’t even sleep without her at my disposal 🔪

I bought something interesting this afternoon. It looks like a small candy bar. It's called a Fire Buddy. It was R10 which works out about 50c American. You light the wrapper. I've got 2 lighters, matches in a TicTac box. I have a tiny container of Vaseline with cut-off Q-tips embedded in it. There's a pair of tweezers to handle it. There are fire strips cut from waxed cardboard milk cartons - dunno why I've never seen these on KZbin - I cut them about 12mm wide and 7cm long. You light them and use them as an extended match and they are hard to blow out. I have some cotton make-up pads soaked in melted Vaseline and coated with candle wax. A tealight candle and 4 birthday candles. I want to get a ferro rod and I want to get a small container of Permanganate of Potash. I'm going to need a bigger pouch...

I'm curious. You riding the wringer, cold, or withdrawing? Love the video, but man, I hate those shakes too. 02:58. Honestly, Yep. Heavy Companion, I tried my best to get the handle to break off the half tang or maybe its a 3/4 tang, batoning? ahah. It can't be done. Use it, Abuse it. Thats the Mora I know, I have some I'm not sure how old they are wood is rotted. I have a few don't touch, my other Mora's gimme some work they say.

I'm using a echsrt zip top pencil case and inside of it I have a pocket knife with a 90° spine a ferro rod some jute cord some cotton balls soaked in wax cotton rounds soaked in wax some fat wood and then two Bic lighters just in case oh and around the end of my Ferro rod I have some duct tape wrapped around to make a handle that I can also use as a fire extender or starter

The butane lighters will also be tough to get to work very well when it gets really cold. You can warm them in your pocket of other safe way to bring you up to temperature. At high altitude they can be uncooperative.

One thing i especially like about the carbon opinels in particular is the massive shower of sparks that the sharp corner on the spine will throw off of a ferro rod. It's particularly convenient that this can be accomplished with the blade locked closed.

Walmart has fixed blade bait knives that come with a hard plastic case and amazingly works great for less than $3 and I've used mine for over 3 years so if your working with a budget this is just something to keep in mind. I also keep a survival pup tent and a couple of waterproof ponchos in my survival kit along with gauze for cuts and extra fire starter. Thanks for the share

The Kansbol is the best knife for hiking and outdoor use. It is a great wood carver but also works great for cleaning fish or cutting food. And that profile grind is fantastic for so many things. Have owned Bark River and Fallkniven but sold them all and kept my Mora 2000 and later the Kansbol. Fun fact: the Mora 2000 is the standard issue knife for Swedish soldiers since the 1990’s. I don’t know if the army is switching to the Kansbol yet, but the green default colour of the Kansbol makes me think that is the case.

Add a pencil sharpener so when you find twighs you just shave them as a pencil. The result shavings will burn fast. Inclued a fresnel magnifying lense to ingnite using the sun (although any reading glasses will do just the same).

Put the bic lighter in an old pill bottle, so you can't accidentally depress the button, and have all the gas leak out! Also, you mentioned keeping the bag itself dry. That looks right about the right size to have a gallon size zip lock bag over the top of it!
