Hello, nice video, but a G9ii with the 100-400mm would have given you the same result for 2x less weight with a focal length equivalent to 800mm. I am quite surprised by the results of some photographers with very expensive equipment, like a Z8. A 25Mpx M4/3 is equivalent to a 50Mpx FF in terms of rendering, since the Photocites are much smaller, people often ignore this kind of relevant details thinking that bigger is always better.

This really resonates with me and is something I am trying to do. Unless I am deliberately planning long exposure or seascape photography I don't take a tripod any more. It hit me like a bolt of lightening last year when photographing woodlands. The breeze meant to freeze the branches I had to shoot at 1/250th second which totally negated the need for a tripod.

Thanks. I’ve been mulling over this combo to upgrade my D500 and 300/f4. Noting what you said near the end, I’d keep my 500/f5.6 PF to use in crop mode to get 750mm efl (having always shot aps-c with a D7100, D7500 and D500 I have no issue with crop mode). I think I’d find these two lenses more manageable than the 180-600. I can see how this lens suits your style, which is very much the animals in context. That’s something I want to do more of.

Thanks very much! I’ve used Nikon, Canon and Fuji over the years and can produce images I’m happy with on any brand. For landscape where everything is in focus I think editing can make all brands look the same if viewed on KZbin or social media. For wildlife specifically I prefer Nikon for the AF and lens choice.

Last July I replaced my D750 with it's 24-120 F4 and 70-300mm AF-S Nikkors with the Z7 II with a 40mm f2 and a 24-120 F4 S lens. I also purchased an FTZ adapter to allow me to use my AF-S mount Sigma 12-24mm lens. A week later I filled out my lens trio with a Tamron 70-300 which is much better than that old 70-300mm Nikkor. So my basic kit was 12-300mm with a 40mm lens for walkabout shooting. Since then I've added a 50mm f1.4 Nikkor, a 26mm f2.8 Nikkor, and a 150-500mm Tamron and a Zf body mainly intended for Walkabout duties and doing some Birding with the 150-500mm. Because the gen 1 AF on the Z7 II really isn't suitable for Wildlife. If Nikon ever releases the Z7 III with Expeed 7 CPU's the Z7 II will get traded in.

Another enjoyable video Wayne. I like your philosophy on wildlife photography where whatever you take the wildlife comes first and being out is just as important. Due to work and commitments, the only day I can get out is a Sunday, it's a time to get out and wander and if I get some nice photos of wildlife so be it but being out is the most important. Take care. Mick.

The Arca Swiss foot was a big sell point, and it works read with most tripod heads. But I really wish the groove extended the entire length of the foot. I started using the 150-600 for BIF video and the foot doesn't fit a large base well. I had to bolt a 6 inch Arca plate to the foot so I could properly balance my XT5 on the video head. Minor issue, but take note if you're going to use a video head.

I find this whole concept ridiculous… not the video, Fuji.. I’ve been with Fuji for a few years from my xt2 and xt4, and was thinking on this lens 150-600. I had the 100-400 and a 1.4 tc which was very good, I must have had a brain fart because I sold it it regretibly ! But my beef is I want this lens but I have to buy the xh2s because the xt4 focus system ain’t up to the job ? It looks like this is what this guy has done, I find that disgusting on Fuji’s part, if that’s the case then I won’t ben buying the lens.. Fuji fix your af system on your next firmware for other cameras, not just one !! Incidentally I’ve even had focus problems with the 55-200mm lens on the xt4.. any Fuji x body should work with the 600mm lens not just one !!

I am glad you are so respectful of the animals you are trying to photograph. I do a a regular walk with my dog on the lead around a local pond. I'm sure the birds know we are coming. I have a bridge camera that goes out to 1200 mm. What I find is that the zoom allows me to frame my subject without cropping. I've learned the limits of the long telephoto with the bridge camera. I get blurry images when the shutter speed is not fast enough. I get purple fringing. So I rely a lot on post processing. I also have another wonderful camera, a Panasonic G9ii with a long telephoto. It's heavier and not as portable as the bridge camera. So I "scout" the scene with the bridge camera and come back later with my better camera. I find that if I return to the same place every few days I see more and I get better photos. I'm always surprised when I'm ready to give up, I get the bird.

I got tired of waiting for the Z6iii so I too ended up with a Z8. I got tired of waiting for the 200(180)-600 and ended up with the Z800/6.3. That said before I bought the 800mm I picked up the 100-400 as well as the 1.4TC. Between 100-300 the lens is brilliant, but at 400 or with the 1.4 attached, it's quite good but not great, IMO. That said, for large animals/landscape it is brilliant and I can't see getting rid of this lens especially since it makes a great "just in case" lens to bring with me when I might see animals while travelling but want to travel relatively light.

Great video Wayne. I have a Z8 and Zf, with 14-30, 24-120, 100-400, 180-600 and 105 2.8 MC. What are your pro's and con's on using the Z8 in DX Crop mode vs using the 1.4 TC. Would be a nice video to see image quality test comparing in crop mode vs 1.4 TC. You're correct about using left hand to support the longer lens. I assigned the movie record button to cycle through the focus modes. You can select only the 4 or 5 you use the most so you can cycle faster on the modes you use instead of all of them. Truly wish Nikon will replace the D500 with a pro-body APS-C
@WayneRobertsonPhotography5 ай бұрын
Hi Doug, thanks for watching and for your comment. You have some nice cameras and lenses! That is a good question about crop mode/cropping in post vs using a 1.4 TC. I think you could ask 100 people the same question and get many different answers! I don't think there is a right or wrong answer, it depends on quite a few factors and could make for a lengthy video for sure. I decide on using or not using my TC on location based on the situation I am in, various things can influence me one way or the other. However, if I am not concerned about the effect on aperture and potentially ISO, and I have time and the situation allows it, generally I will choose to use the TC. This is because I am very happy with the image quality using my TC and prefer that over cropping (I like to get my subject occupying more pixels). The Z TC I have is so good that image quality never crosses my mind when I am considering using it. If you scan the internet I'm sure you will find other people with this opinion and also others saying it does degrade image quality so perhaps something worth testing for yourself if you can. I'm very critical of my photos and wouldn't use my TC if I saw an easily noticeable difference in image quality. I do wonder if there are subtle sample variations between lenses and TCs as some people insist the TC makes image quality significantly worse but that's not my experience. I hope that helps and best wishes.

A great video and some beautiful photographs, thank you. I ordered my Z 100-400 way back when it was first announced and used it with my Z9 and, at that time, Z 7II for many wildlife shoots. I was very pleased with the Z 100-400 and produced my own KZbin video extolling its virtues - especially as a pseudo macro lens as it excels at close focussing for subjects such as butterflies, damselflies etc. The Z 100-400 was my "go-to" lens for two African safari holidays where the flexibility couples to its relatively light weight and small size were ideal. However, I was less happy with its performance when the 1.4x teleconverter was added. Back in the spring I was in a hide photographing grey-herons in flight and a guy sitting next to me had the new Z 180-500 lens and i had the opportunity to take a series of back to back photos with my Z 100-400 + the 1.4xTC and his Z 180-600 on my camera body using the same settings. I was surprised at how much sharper the images the latter produced- despite it not being an S-Line lens and that really set me thinking. I loved the 100-400 but was quite often frustrated by the need for that extra reach (hence the TC!) so went to my local camera store and borrowed a 180-600 for further back to back tests. These were conclusive and I sold off my 100-400 and replaced it with the 180-600 which really is an amazing lens for performance at a great price. The only downside is the loss of the close-focus advantage the 100-400 offers.
@WayneRobertsonPhotography5 ай бұрын
Thank you very much for watching and for sharing your experience! I’ve read many positive comments on the Z 180-600mm lens and it appears to be a great lens and offers really good value, I think it would be a fantastic wildlife lens. I have in the past wondered could there be some sample variation between lenses regarding the Z 100-400mm or indeed in TCs. As I said in the video I’m quite critical of my images and at 560mm I can see extreme detail in feathers, around a birds eye and even within the reflection on the eye. I’ve read of many people reporting a significant drop in image quality with the TC so I’ve always assumed sample variation must be the cause. Thanks again and best wishes.

My country house is located 300 km from home, I travel on weekends, and there is very little time left for photography. I spend more time digging into the ground. And the landscapes are exactly the same. There is the same lonely house and the same gate. Hi Wayne. Very interesting video. I've just sent off my xt5 and lenses for trade in after buying a very discounted z7ii and 24-120mm. I've definitely been bitten by the nikon bug but I'm wondering if I should stick to the z7ii and get a zf to use alongside (and scratch the retro itch) with its excellent low light capabilities or just go all in on a z8. I also do landscape and wildlife. My first lens will be the 180-600 followed by the 14-30 f4. Thanks again.
@WayneRobertsonPhotography7 ай бұрын
Hi Craig, thanks for watching. The Z 24-120mm is a great lens and the Z7 II is a great camera for landscapes. I don't have a lot of experience with the Z7 II for wildlife but I suspect it's absolutely fine for static/slower moving wildlife and generally wildlife which is "easier" to photograph. A Z8 would clearly have better AF for wildlife but it really depends on your needs. I can't comment on the ZF as I haven't used one. Good luck.

After having viewed this video, I am extremely interested in this lens as a future purchase, for use with my XH-1. Thank You for producing such a good and informative video presentation.
