What do I need to do to get the Receiving on the lower left to get up to 60? I am only getting up to 40. Thank you. KJ5EJV
@ND3N
@ND3N 2 күн бұрын
To start, 40 is is good enough for FT8, but try adjusting your RF gain up and down to see how that affects your receive. I like to keep my sensitivity to around 50 ish. And the higher that goes, the more noise you’ll receive. Too low and you’ll start to limit the good signals, and too high you’ll drown them out with the bad signals… QRM/QRN…

I’m now using my 891 as a mobile rig, using the ATAS-120A mobile antenna. Since the rig “tunes” the antenna, I no longer use that tuner, but it also works just as well as an external tuner for most of my other Yaesu radios, so I’ve been using it with my FT-710.

You show how to set the RX levels but said nothing about the TX levels. I noticed that your ALC in TX was about mid range. A lot of people get heart burn if there is any ALC level at all. What do you recommend and why?
@ND3N
@ND3N 10 күн бұрын
I’ve got a video planned for this, but in a nutshell - the displayed ALC represents a bias voltage the radio develops to protect itself from over powering its output. It doesn’t kick in until just after the output power comes up to around 10% of the rated output (or whatever you’ve set as your output. At full ALC, your driving signal is being clamped down to keep your rig below the rated output. So, low ALC means you’re not getting the output current you want, and at max ALC, your signal is being distorted. I find that between 1/3 and 1/2 on the ALC scale is the sweet spot where you’re getting the power you want with a clean, clear signal. There’s more to it, but that’s my general premise…. 73 degrees ND3N

Hi Tom. Really good video. I am trying out FT8 but don't own a computer. Not everyone can afford a computer. It would be great to see another Ham just using an old phone and a cheap radio etc. Video etc. Ps I don't own a Tablet etc. Cheers from George in the UK.

There are micro computers on the market with WSJTx preinstalled. It also has the HF clock installed, that should be enough for a YT search …. They run in the$50-$60 range, and you can usually find a cheap used monitor around. FWIW the enjoyment you’ll get is well worth it…

I took a class in public speaking about 40 years ago and chose the topic of ham radio. I had the class attention when I started by asking "What do I have in common with these people? Barry Goldwater, King Hussen, Arthur Godfrey, Tex Beneke..." I continued by demonstrating with my 2 meter HT calling up hams on repeaters well out of range of line of sight VHF. It is now 52 years I got my ticket. VE7ATU

So...I have been using cluster information on log4om2 seemingly automatic. What I don't understand is that I once upon a time had the ability to spot someone and now I don't. I have come to realize that you must register with a 'server' or ham that will enable this, but the instructions I received from the ham was not clear in how log4om2 gets changed. I didn't change anything or enter the hams telnet address. I am not even sure where to enter that information. I probably need a basic understanding of how the cluster system works on log4om2 in order to make heads or tails of it so I can have enough knowledge to proceed. Any suggestions??
@ND3N
@ND3N 12 күн бұрын
Log4om doesn’t do anything in this case, but if you register with a given cluster, usually your name, call, and location, then when you connect that cluster with log4om, it will recognize you and you’ll be able to post. I recommend ve7cc as they have a downloadable app where can set things up the way you want.

Tom … while interesting this isn’t helpful in that each of these applications has its own set of settings that must match what’s been chosen here. FLDigi, JC8CALL and WSJT-X need to be configured in such a manner that these settings above actually function. On top of that some of these vary by the band. I don’t see for example the setup for FLDigi that matches these radio settings for sending via FLMsg over say 10M, 6M and/or 2M FM. Did you do a video on that as well?

Poor planning in my opinion..International Beacon Project..This has been around since 1979. Frequencies are: 14100, 21150 and 28200. 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. My own 10m beacon is on 28199.5 Also, that tramples on phone frequencies used in Canada. Phone operation is permitted below 7125 on 40. The Trans-Canada net has been on 14140 for decades. These are USA frequencies you are referring to, not North American.. VE3IIM/VE6PG,

I don’t think I’ve seen that in any RT Sys. S/W…. Perhaps because it’s something that is dynamically set to conform for each individual voice. But it would be nice to be able to have a way to easily reload them in case of a required reset…

I been an FT-891 user for 4 years, been using it strictly at home for 95% CW and some SSB. Though I use it as a basic rig, it has lots of features, maybe too many for me. I like it for CW use since it has filtering I can choose. Love the small footprint, and the readout though small, has a nice, readable frequency readout, no problem there. I think many get put off by its size, but I see that as a plus since it won't take up lots of space. Hooked up to a small ATU and I'm all set. Good receive and I get complements on the TX audio. I have been collecting and trading HF rigs for decades, this one is my go-to rig within the last few years. I can't speak for those that use digital modes and such, I simply operate CW and some SSB and it is a wonderful all-around rig, no complaints, great for what it is and the price is a plus.
