I cried when ps2 was discontinued and this video game was and still remains my nostalgic memories of it back when I was a teenager/adult. The last time I played my ps2 was in early January-may 2012 when I played DBZ Budokai 2, fmx, Rayman m, Svr 2006, TH Pro Skater 3 and onimusha 2. Nowadays buying ps2 is hard and expensive surprisingly due to modern technology and TVs.

Given Sega's spotty track record with Sonic over the years, it's probably a good thing we never got any more Ristar entries, leaving the two games untouched and unblemished. I shudder to think what might have happened had they tried doing a 3D open world Ristar. Imagine the potential bugs, glitches and collision detection issues with the stretching arms in 3D. Even going back to the first Sonic Adventure, there were issues. If anything, games like Sonic 06 and Lost World have proved that Sega can mess up 3D big time.

As noted by other comments, the Nintendo Wii kept the PS2 alive ironically because of porting to and frow between them. Couple that to a huge install base, a late releasing successor (PS3 coming a year after the 360), and the expense of the new systems.

I loved your video. I believe you got almost everything right, but I do believe you got two GIGANTIC points wrong. The name of the kingdom of sorrow is Hyoponia. The songs of Klonoa 1 play there. Also, the King of Sorrow is very similar to Klonoa from the first game. I do not want to give a definitive answer, but: What if these are Klonoa dreams? This is his journey through grief - having Mira-Mira, Volk, La-Lakoosha, Hyoponia and Joliant represent, respectively, Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression and Acceptance -. It is out of order, but the world is out of balance because the dreamer - Klonoa - doesn't want to be sad. The king of sorrow even look like Klonoa from the first game. I do think this is a point to consider. Otherwise, I really loved your review and was glad someone did it! I really love these games!

I think Fifa was the last game here in U.S. Last MEMORABLE game, imo, was Marvel: Ultimate Allianve 2. I loved X-Men Legends: Rise of Apocalypse and Ultimate Alliance was OK, so i had hopes..😅

I still love the PS2 and play it sometimes. But i see more and more one big problem with the PS2... Between the fact that the analog video Output is not that good like a direct HDMI Output and that the textures are not that good... or i should say, the textures are bad! :D I have recognized more and more that the most PS2 Games are very blurry and dark. Especially if you try to compare them with releases on PC or PS3.

I adored this game. Also 'think it bears mention the changes to the international version, given how unusual they were. Sure they did the whole 'American Kirby is hardcore' thing by making Ristar's boss fight scowl permanent in the international version... but then the Japanese version had this brooding 'We'll be back'-type ending for the baddies, while the international just had Ristar hurling himself into his (huge) father's hands and "DAD!!!"

The game is okay, but not outstanding. It is a game that continues to use a system that is already obsolete even for the time (short game that returns you to the beginning when you lose), something that was no longer done (generally) in Nintendo games on the NES. Adding difficulty selectors is fine (Sega used to do that), but you could tell it was to cover that flaw.

Looking at Ristar objectively I can't say it's a masterpiece, but it's a very good platformer with designs that were ahead of it's time. I think the Game Gear port was also very impressive! I wouldn't mind seeing the little guy make a comeback.

I love this analysis so much, thank you for putting it out! You mentioned how Klonoa seemed less involved in this world than in Door to Phantomile, but that might be on purpose. Klonoa was pretty traumatized at the truths he was told at the end game, maybe he was trying his hardest not to get involved or be attached to anyone because he was still processing his own grief. Maybe that's why he made a sad expression after the cutscene in the Mirr-Mir level. Klonoa was empathetic but still seemed to still hold himself back from really reaching out to Lolo. Just a theory to add on though. Honestly, I love this game so much and thank you again for doing it justice!

We really do need more Klonoa analysis videos on KZbin, 'cause this is a prime example on how to do it right. Nicely done on this video! Games like Kingdom Hearts and Sly Cooper are all well and good, but for me, the PS2 peaked with Klonoa 2: Lunatea's Veil.
