Superb and Glorious Childhood Memories ! for Academic Interest Sri lakshmi varaaham Ragam Abhogi 22nd Mela janya Adi Talam Muthuswami Dikshitar Krithi This Song is Kshrtra on Adivaraha Perumal on town on the right bank of the Thamiraparani river in Ambasamudram Taluk of Tirunelveli districtin Tamil Nadu, a southern state of India. Like any Indian rural town, this town too is steeped in tradition and rich in heritage, struggling to hold on to its past glories. Here the modern co-exist peacefully with the bullock-carts and rickshaws of yesterday years Kallidaikurichi, endowed with a rich heritage, is dotted with many ancient Hindu shrines in each street in each gramam of the village. These are of ancient temple architecture style having high-rise gopurams (ornamental gateways of temples) with intricate sculptures, heralding the past glory of this region. Muthuswami Dikshitar, the Great carnatic composer, whose songs abound with geographic and iconographic references, sings of the curative properties of the river Thamiraparani. To him, the Goddess at Tirunelveli, is Hima-saila-sutaa (daughter of the mountain snow). The local language is Tamil. Adivaraha Perumal temple represents the principal deity of the present day Aadhi Varaha is seen in a sitting posture with a folded left leg and the right leg leaning on the ground and with Bhoo devi on his lap. Lord Aadhi Varaha Perumal is believed to have appeared from a bucket that rolled over from the Tamaraibarani where Kubera was undertaking penance. It is believed that Lord Aadhi Varaha appeared before him and provided darshan answering his prayers. Pleased with this darshan, it is believed that Kubera installed the idol at this place. Later on, various Kings including the Nayak rulers are believed to have contributed to the improvements to this ancient temple. Muthuswamy Dikshitar has composed Lakshmi Varaha Bajaham Krithis (Abhogi Raga) about this Lord where he refers to this Lord as ‘ Tamaraibarani Theera Kubera Prathistitham’.Kallidaikurichi. pallavi shree lakshmi varaaham bhajEham shree lakshmi sahitham sruta jana subhapradam I worship Lord Lakshmi Varaha who is with his consort Lakshmi. He bestows happiness to those who seek refuge in him. anupallavi neela mEgha jaya shyaamaLa gaatram neela boodEvi stuti paartram neelakanTa Siva guruguha mitram nikhila bhakta jana bayaartri taatram His body shines like blue cloud. Goddess Neela and Bhudevi worship him. He is friendly to Siva and Guha. He dispels fears of devotees. charnnam mangaLaalayaabohi nuta padam punkava budha jana natam veda nutam shankara priyakaram Kubhera pradhishtitham canka cakra dharam kripa karam pankajaasana pramukha sevitham pankaja mukha bhaargavi bhaavitam bhanka hara tamraparni dheerastam shankaTa hara sadaanandha sahitam He is praised in Abhogi Raga. Virtuous and learned pundits worship him. Vedas extol his glory. He is helpful to Siva. Kubera installed the deity with discus and conch. He is full of mercy. Brama and other eminent persons worship him. Beautiful Bhargavi meditates upon him. He established himself on the bank of Tamrapani river which eradicates evils. He saves us from all troubles. He is blissful. Raga Abhogi Janyam of 22nd mela Karaharapriya. Aro: S R2 G2 M1 D2 S Av: S D2 M1 G2 R2 S Abhogi is a bright raga, listening to which people get a spring in their step and hope in their hearts. This raga’s vibrance and positivity are noteworthy. In classical kutcheris compositions in this raga are sung in the earlier part of the concert to capture the listeners’ fancy and give a flying start to the recital. This raga dispels dullness and its name literally means sumptuous and luxurious. Abhogi is a symmetric raga and has five notes in its ascent and descent: Sadja, Chatusruti Rishabha, Sadharana Gandhara, Suddha Madhyama and Chatusruti Dhaivata. A striking feature is that the Pancama and Nishada are not seen. A very important point to note while handling Abhogi is that in the transition from Dhaivata to Sadja and vice-versa, the Nishada must be completely avoided and the glide must be carefully executed, failing which Abhogi’s allied raga Sriranjani will surface.
