When I can't use emulsion for my screen printing, I use my Sillouehte to make a stencil and stick it to my mesh, doesn't work for a lot of prints but is very helpful.

Great video! Did you use the waterbased ink that came with the printer or did you plastisol? Do you think you could reuse the screen for a different design with the laser?
@KelBelter
@KelBelter 19 күн бұрын
Hi! I used some of the water based ink that came with it and some of my own water based/acrylic inks that I had in stock. No plastisol on paper :-) You can use the screen again if you just reclaim and recoat it as normal! Then you can use the laser again on the same screen.

For those who are interested in how to fold the zine prototype in this video, you can see a written and photo tutorial for free on my Patreon here: www.patreon.com/posts/how-to-design-104893180?Link&

Do you have any folding/assembly tips? My edges never line up that nicely :,)
@KelBelter
@KelBelter Ай бұрын
First making sure all the pages are the exact same size before folding helps a lot! But after that, I just make sure that my folded edges line up nicely because I can adjust the other three sides later. I do this by using the guillotine to trim a little off the edges as a last step after the glue is dry if I want them to look more 'perfect.' But sometimes not necessary if the folded pages were the right size to begin with :-)

Hi! I usually use Adobe photoshop or illustrator to arrange the pages! But you can use any image editing software to do it. I save my finished pages as jpgs and then arrange them on the correct paper size. If you don’t have Adobe, you can also use web editing apps like Photopea

Would you recommend this for a beginner who has never silkscreened before? Or would there be any other options you would recommend?
@KelBelter
@KelBelter Ай бұрын
I think this is very beginner friendly because everything is already put together for you, so there’s less chance for human error. Minimal setup time and easy to get the hang of. If you want to just get a feel for silkscreen though, sometimes you can order screens with your image burned into them from a studio/online! Then you can just try the printing part before committing to making your own space/investing in more expensive tools.

I'm a designer by training. The process you're explaining is what I do for graphic design type projects. Part of the ethos of zine making for me is that they're quick and dirty, and imperfect, punk-style. For me, zine making is an excuse to NOT do the careful process you use here. Though I can imagine that you'd sell better zines that have been carefully designed. There's no wrong way, this isn't a criticism. I think zines can be amazing too when people DO miss the steps of making prototypes. Single-drafted zines can be beautiful in their rawness.
@KelBelter
@KelBelter 2 ай бұрын
Sure! Everyone has their own way. Both are valid. In my opinion, zines have also evolved over time to cover a larger category of work from ‘quick and dirty’ photocopies to also more polished visual publications. Furthermore, many people don’t come from a design background, or have 0 experience printing and self publishing. So, I think it’s nice to explain the options of prototyping, so people can tailor it to their needs.
