The radiator cap? If you have pressure in there during your test you have a head gasket or cylinder base gasket leak. Should be no pressure in the rads

A great video. Thank you. A side note: I’ve always wondered if the US will ever catch up with (pretty much) the entire rest of the world and convert to the metric system. It is SO much simpler! 🤷♂️

2005 Mercury Mountaineer same 4.0 engine. We had that rattle. We removed the engine and changed the timing gears, chains, and guides. It does require special tools to time the engine but everything you need is available on ebay and it is really not that expensive. It also is not as difficult as you might think, and there are videos on KZbin that cover every part of the process. My son and I fixed it together. Really it's just time. If you have the time and don't mind pulling out the engine, it's not that bad of repair. Will we had the engine out anyway, we also replace the rear main seal, water pump, power steering pump, EGR, throttle body, and belt tensioner. Those parts are also not horribly expensive, and extremely easy to replace with the engine out. Put it back in and it works great. While it is true that Ford did not do too great with this timing tension system, it is repairable. And if you look on the internet you find out that every vehicle has its problems. Just something to deal with!

For the life of me I can’t figure out how to get a wrench to have clearance to get the back tensioner out. I got a shallow 27mm but the wrench seems to have little to no room because of the exhaust manifold/pipe etc.. How did you get the back one out??

So you say .. better then a compression test.. so how does this show you that the rings are any good... Or if a head gasket is any good on an air cooled engine... Yes on a liquid cooled two stroke it might be handy to blow bubbles like that ... But this test does not show what condition the top end of the engine is ,,at all..... This test you did here is also supposed to have vacuum applied .. because the actual name of your test is .vacuum/pressure test
@turdpike2 ай бұрын
Hey tips if you knew it all already why are you here? Air cooled engines certainly do have head gaskets. Yes ideally a vacuum test also will be beneficial, but a 2 stroke engine (or 4 for that matter) is just an air pump. Testing integrity of seals under pressure is necessary because during operation they must withstand positive pressure. Applying negative pressure is also a good idea, but realistically and usually choosing to test via positive pressure is going to yield similar results. If it was so wrong to do, why do all piston aircraft engines get tested this way? On the note of compression test, I mean the leakdown is better overall as you are analyzing/ testing way more than just your top end health. No this won’t tell you if your rings are worn, but name me how many average riders you know that have heard of a leakdown/vacuum test vs how many have heard of a compression test.

Very nice! I work on the ramp at Pascan aviation in St-Hubert, Canada near Montreal and they operate the Saab 340B. Cool to see the engine in detail. Cheers, kzbin.info/www/bejne/eKWXinWXi8uWrrs

I’ve been looking into getting some of my own tools and just a question on imperial vs metric, might depend on location in the world but generally does the industry lean on metric or imperial? Or is it a mix of both like depending on manufacturer?
@turdpike5 ай бұрын
It is 99% imperial. Even European airframes. It’s a good idea to have some metric in the box, every now and again you’ll come across some components with a 10mm or something on it but it is SAE dominated industry.

Mine is backwards. I have a brand new remanufactured engine. ZERO rattle at startup, but when warm at idle i have (sounds like mables in a can of oil rattling), like a quiet diesel. With any throttle response, it goes away. Weird.

I saw another video where the guy put a zip tie around the spring that attaches to that bracket. So essentially you are taking the spring out of the equation. I did it on my Club Car and it works perfectly. I went from 12mph to 18mph.

Great video. This saved me from buying a new cam chain, tensioner and cutting it open to see how it works. On the Yamaha rhino 660’s, the cam chain tensioners were known to fail and they use the same type tensioner but I thought it was a worm gear that was in there but I see that it’s a spring that’s under tension that twists. A lot of guys put the rhino 700 ratcheting style chain tensioner in there as the fix or the upgrade. OK let’s talk now about the Polaris Ranger 900 Engine that I’m working on. They use a hydraulic style cam chain tensioner so on start up, they always tick a little bit, and then the tick goes away once oil gets to it but these tensioners are known to fail altogether destroying the engine. A lot of guys are going to the Alba racing chain tensioners but actually they use the same type tensioner as in your video or the same one that the Yamaha rhino 660 uses. I don’t have a big racing shop, but if I did, I’d be building a tensioner with the ratchet style versus the spring that winds up and breaks. Again, thanks for this video.
