Very 1950’s , the driver had no..’desk’..whatsoever, just his knees to look down at, it must have felt like a Rolls Royce considering at the time that he had just stepped off the footplate of a steam locomotive

Those loco driver control levers looked straight out of an old steam loco, but shinier. Built for heavy-handed folk maybe

Title is wrong, there has never been a DP1. That is a modern fancy, as this loco was never numbered. And DP2 was Diesel Prototype 2, nothing to do with Deltic, as many seem to believe.
@markherzog94848 ай бұрын
Amazing the Deltic was the Merlin/RB211 of diesel motive power….British engineering (although German influenced) at its greatest……..

I'm NOT a train spotter, but there is something special about Deltics! They are the loco version of a F4J Phantom plane. Big heavy, dirty smoky and smelly......And absolutely GORGEOUS! Remember being stood FAR too close to the rails on what I thought was a disused line one day, stark bollock naked (I'm a nudist and there wasn't anyone else about in the area......Suddenly I heard the track hissing, and realised that a train was approaching, so I stood well clear and turned round to have a look. It was a Deltic, pulling a load of ballast waggons. Only going 20 or so miles an hour. As it got close, I could feel the ground shake, and the smell was incredible <3 Could feel the heat as it went past. Pure power. They don't have the glamour of steam engines, but it's a piece of beautiful engineering!
@ANDREWLEONARDSMITH3 ай бұрын
Forget the Phantom the Deltic is more like The Avro Lancaster as it is very much of the same era despite being 10 or so years later but stirs up the same emotions as a masterpiece of British Engineering at its best.
@249346373 ай бұрын
@@ANDREWLEONARDSMITH Not sure that I agree. Lancaster, in service 1942, Type 55s in built in 1961 and 1962! The Lancaster to me seems a lot cleaner and of a far removed age from the age of 'Diesel Electric' locos, and to me, it really is evocative of the F4 Phantom of the 1960s and 70s, especially as it's not (to many) as attractive as the earlier Steam engines and it's sometimes dirty and smelly same as the F4. This doesn't in ANY way take away the fact that it IS an awesome example of British engineering, something that can't be said of the F4! But it certainly doens't bring up any thoughts at least not to me, of WW2 era piston engined bombers! Not getting into a disagreement, these are only our different opinions anyway, and you are totally within your rights to have a different view, and I wouldn't even want to change that! :D
@249346373 ай бұрын
@@ANDREWLEONARDSMITH We're certainly NOT going to disagree about how good it is to see one nowadays on the rare occasions that they are out!! <3
