That storyline with Dylan was so much like General Hospital sunny and vibe life storyline from General Hospital at the same time. I wonder if they stole it all these years they did on the General Hospital do it all dead or dead? Did they from General Hospital?

Started season 6 and I don't know if I'll pull through. I actually found the last stretch of season 5 episodes a bit trying already. It'll probably even more difficult to continue after Luke Perry leaves. Miss Shannen Doherty so much. I also find Ray Pruit to be an aesthetically repulsive character. I was hoping he'd be taken out of the show by season 5's end, but he's a regular in season 6 💀

I was shocked when I saw his face as a regular in the season 6 intro. Also, the way they removed Darren Star's name from the intro was wild too. Without giving away too many spoilers: once Dylan leaves, Ray's days are numbered. He's not there very long. I actually thought Ray/Donna was the most interesting thing about the last stretch of season 5. It was intense and brought a lot of sadness out of Donna. I agree with you about Ray though. Repulsive. And that made him a good villain in season 5. Not so much in season 6.

What a journey, when you say Gossip Girl is your favorite piece of art ever created you definitely set a high bar for me going in, but I can confidently say that this show is absolutely the best teen drama I've ever watched, I'm almost reluctant to start watching any other teen drama after witnessing this perfect execution of teen television, the series as a whole almost transcends being a piece of media just for teens. As for the reveal of who has been Gossip Girl this whole time, looking back how could it not have been Dan, ofc it was him, the writer who wanted desperately into the world, the narrative, of the Upper East Side so he wrote himself into the said narrative itself. If I had one complaint about this season it'd be I felt as if things wrapped up a little too quickly, they could've done a few more episodes & explored Lily & Rufus' situation with her Ex-Husband William coming back, I also wanted to see more of characters like Vanessa, Lola, Jenny & Eric, but nonetheless I thoroughly enjoyed my time on the Upper East Side. Xoxo~~

This season was intense & I'm all for it. Nate feeling like half a person when he finds out his characterization in Dan's Novel, its speaks to the meta narrative itself considering Nate has always been one of the more looser characters in the show. The route Serena takes when she's given control of something as powerful as Gossip Girl & lengths she went to try at get Dan back. I'm just snatching the surface here, but it was all exhilarating to watch, I loved this season & I'm excited to see whats next. Xoxo.

oh god i‘m praying you have the strenght to get through season 8 because that is just dreadful. like.. truly. but anyways i‘m glad you still love david and donna! I loved davids storyline in s7 aswell and it‘s nice that you related to him on such a deep level! i liked him with valerie in season 6 but her character gets very one dimensional very quick and the storylines have been crazy since season 5 especially the ones with dylan. I wish they‘d include him more with the gang but since his character doesn’t go to college they had to come up with other uninteresting arcs when all anyone wants to see is him with kelly and his rivarly / friendship with brandon. Those got neglected bc he was leaving and thus came the uninteresting love story with toni. alot of people seem to love them but to me they were just a cliché and couldn‘t be compared to the chemistry and story of him and kelly. the show lost its charm around here but the last seasons are very important for dylan and kelly fans so stick it out! Brandon‘s deteriorating character needs to be studied. He became boring and so unlikable so quick. Him and Kelly just don‘t have it and it gets even worse just watch sigh 😭 i loved the scene of kelly confronting dylan outside of the peach pit though and how donna was the only one david wanted help from in vegas. They are the best couples and are showing to be the heart of the show going forward from now.

Yes! I wholeheartedly agree with all your points about season six and seven. Toni was boring and she was intimately connected to a storyline that was too convoluted and silly to care about. I love Rebecca Gayheart, but that wasn't it. I also liked David and Valerie in season six. If I'm not mistaken, Brian and Tiffani were a couple, right? There was good chemistry there, but I felt that trying to redeem Val was kind of pointless and boring. Then they made her the villain again only to have her do one dimensional and cartoonish things. I loved David's mental health storyline. That really spoke to me and I felt all of it. Donna Martin is my cult wife, and I love her. Without a doubt, my favorite couple. Brandon and Kelly are super boring. I can't tell if it's Brandon's characterization or Jason's theatrics, but he's become a strange and unlikable lead. I miss Dylan, I miss Brenda. I don't think I'll miss Brandon. I'm in it to win it. No giving up now. I'll fight my way to the end of the show. I'm getting a pretty good idea about who Aaron Spelling was as an artist. Next video will be about season 8 and season 9.

@@yourcultboyfriend great points! Yes they dated but i think only in season 5 because he got jealous on set. Brandon is just not it and the worst part is he keeps dragging kellys character down. She becomes cindy 2.0 and dresses like a 38 year old housewife. It doesnt help that she sees him as god himself saving her from the harsh world. You‘re right she needs someone to challenge her and dylan did that.

However, I believe the primitive language they're building now will inevitably be innovated upon by a future generation, who will become the analogues in their medium to the cinema icons Korine mentioned. So far Gossip Girl has been the best CW show I've watched, it feels different than the rest. There comes a point in S4 when Serena struggles with choosing Dan or Nate, but it never devolves into your typical "Team Dan" or "Team Nate" narrative like most other shows & every decision the characters makes never feels out of character. Gossip Girl doesn't settle for cheap fan service that never ages well instead keeps with the ongoing conflict that challenges both the characters & the audience.

finally watching your oc vids! and i have to say you completely put into words why i could never emotionally connect to the oc. i thought maybe it was bc i watched it after i watched oth but it wasn‘t just that. the first 3 or 4 episodes had potential namely the pilot. we are told that ryan is this rebellious kid and marissa is supposed to be the beautiful girl who craves connection and more than the superficial world she lives in. but when the show started to go on i quickly realized why i never found myself attached to the ryan and marissa relationship even though i so badly wanted to see what others saw. you explained it perfectly : ryan on paper is supposed to be the catalyst for marissa to reject the world she was brought up in. but she already rejects it on her own. as the show progress she is the one rebelling more and more and ryan seems like just another kid from newport. I really wanted the two worlds to mesh together in every episode not just the holidays. I felt disconnected from ryan because of it too because the point of the show is not even really addressed enough. The main theme became marissa dealing with her problems and how she drove the story forward and ryan just , like you said, basically accepted everything handed to him when i was expecting him to rebel or be more of a.. presence. I don‘t know i always thought that him coming to their oc was supposed to transform everyone around him and the show tells us this with the cohens but.. i just don‘t see it. Especially with the group. Sure he gave seth a friend to confide in and he found a family but i‘m missing something. We don’t know much about his backstory or how he became the person he is because well.. his entire family is destined to end in tragedy yet he is the only one who wants more for himself and he gets that chance bc of Sandy. But why is he different? I want a collision to happen between the two worlds and you explained it better in the end of the video. i always tried to connect with the show but i just don‘t and it sometimes makes me upset because i really wanted to love the show because on paper it‘s exactly the kind of story i‘d love especially the ryan and marissa relationship.
@yourcultboyfriend
@yourcultboyfriend 4 күн бұрын
That was perfectly said! Ryan always bothered me because of that. It think Schwartz was conscious of Ryan's non-presence because of the (beautifully) chaotic way he developed Trey Atwood in the second season. The show's premise simply goes unrealized in the first season. Marissa does most of the narrative heavy lifting. The pilot promises that Ryan will be a symbol of rebellion and liberation, but he quickly becomes symbolic of conformity instead. I think Ryan's underwhelming presence also hurt his chemistry with Marissa. Now that I've watched Gossip Girl, I like to view The OC as a necessary warm-up or practice run. The OC is still good. It's a clever and sensitive show. The second season was brilliant, but it fell off completely after that. Ryan was a broken character, and I don't even mean emotionally, I mean that he didn't operate properly within the narrative itself. And the show tried to make the only broken character its centerpiece. That's why truly conflicted characters like Marissa and lovable ones like Seth and Summer easily overshadowed him.

Damon and Stefan are probably the only "couple" that's properly threaded through the series. They're still so vicious and cruel to each other. Bonnie's "relationship" with her own magical ancestry (personified by the Bennett ghosts) was also good. So much of The Vampire Diaries was about our "relationship" with the past, and with couples comprised of historical doubles. I loved Katherine so much. Elena got my nerves, but Katherine was great.

I agree with your hot twitter take towards the end. As a child in the late 90s, I read too many interviews of TV actors extremely eager to send the message that they hadn't even watched any episodes of their shows, except the pilots (only because it was at a premiere party) and that they're not even interested in their respective genres. I'd also notice in later seasons when the actors would get to write and direct various episodes, often the results would reveal certain limitations. If Drama Queens is how you say, do you think they'll attempt to make the sequel closer to the prestige tv that you're less into? Or a revenge story of Mouth getting what he deserves?
@yourcultboyfriend
@yourcultboyfriend 7 күн бұрын
It might be a poor imitation of prestige tv. I have a feeling there will be plenty of meta jokes about how "over the top" and "disagreeable" the original series was. I think it's great that you pointed out the limitations when the actors take more creative control in later seasons. That's a really cool point. 50% of the time, you're absolutely right. If Two Tree Hill goes the prestige route, I'd hate it. It's as if they wish that they were on Friday Night Lights (which was good, but had a lot of problems because of it being decidedly "prestige"). I think it's going to be a sequel with a lot of tonal inconsistency and mood swings. That, or they're going to be making fun of the original. If they could somehow manage to be like Gimore Girls: A Year in the Life, that would be great. OTH, part of its brilliance, was the emotional and narrative balancing act. It was daring. I don't think anyone attached to the sequel so far can pull it off.

I'm going to attempt to articulate this the best that I can. Can a great piece of art exist without being problematic? Is art inherently exploitative? I often ponder such notions in my spare time. As a Director/Showrunner you make use of the others around you to benefit your overhaul end goal as a Creative/Artist, is this by definition exploitative? There's varying degrees to this ofc, but YourCultBoyfriend was right when he said this would start a conversation some ppl might not be ready for. Great Artists are torture in some way & can be problematic at times & I do personally believe someone that is troubled or has suffered will turn to artistic expression in hopes of better understanding such philosophical conflicts they grapple with, in turn creating a great piece of art; that others, who deal with similar issues, connect with. But this all leads me back to the question of, is great art inherently exploitative? The answer: I don't know.
@yourcultboyfriend
@yourcultboyfriend 7 күн бұрын
Thanks for jumping in. It's a difficult discussion to have. Basically everything on the planet is exploitative in some way, but not everything has to be abusive. Great art can exploit feelings and memories as well as actors and crew members. Guys like Mark and Joss were pretty bad though. Geniuses like Kevin Williamson, Darren Star, and Amy Sherman-Palladino prove that abusive behavior is the exception, not the expectation (I pray to God this sentence ages well). I think there's a fine line between utilizing resources and treating them unfairly. In cases such as those with Mark, the conversation is more intense because he went beyond exploiting unfairly, he was allegedly abusive and threatening. I don't really think anyone is beyond redemption. I'd personally love to hear Mark talk about his creative vision and the art of coming-of-age stories. He was unbelievably brilliant, but he was also seemingly cruel, petty, and aware. One Tree Hill was super unique and the show itself was often deeply exploitative. It's equally fascinating and revolting how Mark used a shool s**oting to shamelessly push his soap opera narratives into an artificially "prestige" framework. That was wild. A lot of the more controversial or intense storylines on OTH were handled in creative ways that bordered on the psychotic. That's part of Mark's brilliance. He had such an incredible understanding of television art and didn't seem to express any shame in that. I'm perfectly comfortable praising the art of problematic artists. I don't even like to separate the art as I feel the artist intimately informs the art itself. The actors as well as the fans have performed a complete erasure of Mark from his own creation. That's fine, and simple enough to do, until you try to make a sequel without his involvement and it ends up failing. It's then you'll have to ask, "What would Mark have done differently?" And I believe he was so insane, so singular, that no one but Mark himself would be able to accurately answer that question. Is all great art inherently exploitative? Isn't everything inherently exploitative under capitalism? We have to remember that OTH was quoting Ayn Rand by the second episode in a way that was genuinely inspiring and beautiful. OTH played by a different rulebook and philosophy altogether. According to Mark's philosophy within the show, exploitation is not simply intrinsically connected to great television art, exploitation is one of its strengths.

Finished season 4. HARD disagree on Dylan/Kelly being soulmates. The only reason that was written into the show is Shannen Doherty having to leave. Dylan and Brenda were truly endgame and I'm confident that's how the vast majority of fans also feel. Even Dylan's little sister Erica spills it out for us at one point: "I still think you should be with Brenda". The last scene of the season 4 finale feels like the season finale of Twin Peaks season 2: truncated due to external production factors and yet encapsulating the show perfectly. Brenda was the soul of 90210 and Dylan/Brenda were THE couple. I don't know how I'm going to start watching season 5 without Doherty/Brenda in the picture. Season 4 could be a series finale of sorts.

I like to think that the heart/soul of the show is shared between Brenda and Dylan. For different reasons. I'm a big Doherty/Brenda fan too. I wish they had provided an interesting boyfriend for her after Dylan, but her other romantic interests fell flat. Not her fault. I like that we can disagree on this, and I like that this triangle continues to be a contentious storyline. I feel that the chemistry Perry and Garth had was undeniable, palpable, and genuine. I also LOVE the drama from their relationship and I'm a sucker for their kind of romance. I thought they were so deeply sincere and attractive together. I also appreciate that I can see how Dylan/Kelly inspired many of my favorite teen soap couples. I honestly thought that Dylan/Brenda became stale near the end of season 2. Kelly made both of them interesting again in season 3, and the conflict led to some seriously superb acting from Doherty. Ultimately, I believe the genre itself benefited so much from Dylan/Kelly, as did the show and the characters involved. I thought they were super romantic and made me think about fascinating stuff. I definitely miss Brenda. Season 4 was excellent. You certainly feel her absence in season 5, but the show still managed to pull through. I'm on season 6 right now and... well, it's not so great 🫠

@@yourcultboyfriend I think Kelly and Dylan had a couple of really beautiful moments. When Kelly reveals her profound self-loathing in the swings scene and Dylan tells they are soul mates, it is undeniably powerful as two unloved souls find each other. Unfortunately that potential was not exploited and for the rest of their relationship, Dylan and Kelly did very little more than constantly fight. I think Brenda, Dylan are Kelly are all great characters who have complex, complicated, humanly messy relations with one another.

David always felt the most authentic and relatable character to normal people because he was in touch with the 90s trends it‘s always fun to interact with his character! And yes Dylans storylines get more soapier and crazier each season. I wish he was more integrated with the rest of the cast it reminds me of Pacey. Those two didn‘t like college so the writers had to come up with something quick 😂 it feels like the only reason he is in beverly hills is kelly. I wish they gave him and brandon more scenes i always loved them interacting from them being brothers to the rivarly. It is true that Luke and Jason started to ask for more challenging stuff though so that‘s why their storylines are always the most crazy ones

Comparing college era Dylan to college era Pacey makes a lot of sense. They weren't fully integrated at all lol. Like, Chuck Bass didn't go to college either and spent a lot of time in life or death soapy conflicts too, but at least he was intimately involved with the rest of the characters. Dylan also reminds me a lot of Logan Echolls. Poor Little Rich Boys. I love soapy stories though. I'm always entertained by Dylan. Dylan, or maybe just Luke, had a habit of bringing the best out of the cast. He makes me like Brandon so much more than I ordinarily do. He has had excellent moments with all of them and keeping him so distant is hurting some of the other characters too, because they shine so much in his presence. David is a great character. I think he's emblematic of the nineties. I love the guy.

Also the actor who played Ray actually got fired because the response was so bad. Aaron hated that the audience thought Donna was stupid for staying with him so he got fired and his music and acting career took a huge nose dive. He actually suffered for many years bc of what Ray did and couldn‘t get jobs in the Industry. The plan was to redeem him in season 6 but it never happened.

I love Donna and David so much. I am genuinely thrilled that these videos have made you like Donna more. If Donna is proud of me, I'm proud of me. David and Donna are the best. It's a shame about Jamie Walters. All he did was play the character well! He was good as Ray. Based on what I saw in season five, the character was pretty irredeemable. Ray was a solid character and a truly despicable antagonist. I wish it didn't have to ruin a his career. He was an easy character to hate. Nothing wrong with that. The actor didn't do anything wrong. I think I've heard stories about Paul Johansson being attacked/insulted in public, mostly for OTH. Some guys are just great at playing villains. I like a good villain, especially in a teen soap. Dan Scott forever. Ray was hard to simply like. And I adore Dylan and Kelly.

I started rewatching 90210 for the first time since my early teens a few weeks ago, am on mid season 4 at the moment and it's been shockingly pleasurable and rewarding, yes. I thought the show was just a relic from my early teens, but it's actually genuinely great. I can't agree on David being the best character, though; he's unfortunately my least favorite. I don't mind unlikable characters, but David's descent isn't really interesting to me, just grating. Brenda was my favorite at the time and she remains my favorite now. Shannen Doherty gave us a legendary, timeless character. I will probably watch season 5 as I remember liking Valerie, but Brenda was truly the heart and soul of 90210 for me (even if I love Dylan, Donna and Andrea).

Season four of the college era of 90210 hope you got a pretty good start to it. She’ll pretty much go pretty princess and down until we were replaced with the girl from.😅 I hope you consider her post on this character as much. I really wish when she left so that’s when that show went down to.

What I love about Southland Tales is that everyone who watches it has their own interpretation of it, the characters and all the events happening in it. I loved it ever since I first seen the movie back in the year that it had just come out, it gets a lot of things right about the world and some things wrong, but the wrong things can still kinda happen if things in the world keep evolving both in a positive and negative way. Every character in the movie feels real and has their own agenda for what they do in the movie, and we all probably know people in real life that are similar to all those characters in the movie, we know the war torn soldiers, we know extreme activists, we know drug dealers, drug addicts, we know people of all races, religions, sexes, we know the politicians that will say anything just to get elected, we know the narcissistic egotistical Hollywood celebrities and porn stars out there, we know people who form one sided parasocial relationships with celebrities, popular personalities and online personalities, and finally most importantly we all know our place in society. This movie hits you a certain way and is a memorable experience. I’m not a military person and never served, but I find myself humming that memorable catchy song that Pilot Abilene sings, and sing out the lyrics to myself every now and then. 🎶🎶”I got soul, but I’m not a soldier”🎶🎶.
