What is the detail of your gem screen, size, where can I get one?
@mudbrothersrocks12 күн бұрын
Gem screen I was using was a cooking screen you put over your pan. I cut the handle off and taped it, I wouldn’t recommend using it that thing sucked haha. I ended up giving it to the host of the Airbnb at the house I was staying at for the work trip I was on. Their kid loved it. I would get a nice stainless steel one made completely out of metal, as far as the screen size I’m unsure.

Well, after watching your video I had to build my own GIANT ROCK TUMBLER. It weighs 325 pounds and has four rollers. The bottom roller holds a stainless beer keg tumbler barrel and the three upper rollers hold 8 inch to 10 inch PVC barrels. It easily turns about 130 pounds of rocks at the same time! I drive it with a Consew model 3001, 1 HP stepper motor that is made for an industrial sewing machine. It sounds terrible! I have it in a closed barn but you can hear it from about 60 yards away. The best part is, it drives away all the rats and mice!!!
@mudbrothersrocks16 күн бұрын
Heck yeah! I imagine you built yours properly too lol. That keg is an awesome idea I might have to steal that, now to find one is the hard part. Have the pvc barrels lasted you a long time? I had to soundproof my shed I was worried the neighbors would file a complaint haha
@hillwooky13 күн бұрын
@@mudbrothersrocks I made the PVC barrels out of cellular core pipe because that's what I had on hand. They have lasted for four months but you can see where the inner shell has worn through in spots. I'm going to make the next barrel from solid PVC well casing and see how long that lasts. The beer keg has also had some issues. First of all it's SUPER LOUD! I have to wear hearing protection to be near it running. At first, when I started running the keg, the rocks seemed to tumble fine but after a week or so you could hear them starting to slide around in there. Some rock were tumbling but some were sliding. I let it run for a couple of weeks just to experiment but when I took the rocks out many of the larger rocks had curious facets that matched the inner curve of the wall of the keg. So now I have the weird funky gems with curved facets. On the plus side, the keg has a big port hole that's almost six inches across, Like 5-7/8 inches, so I can put a beer mug sized rock in there. I welded up a 16 gauge stainless sheet metal collar and flange and I used a piece of an aluminum street sign for the port cover. It took 16 bolts and a rubber gasket to keep it from leaking. An eight bolt pattern leaked pretty bad but probably due to my poor chicken shit welding. To keep the rock from sliding, I'm going to epoxy some small brass flat bars, about 1/4" x 3/4" x6", in there with J-B weld. Tumble On.
@mudbrothersrocks12 күн бұрын
I bet if you coated the inside with some rubber it would deaden the sound and make it last a lot longer, pvc and keg. I got an industrial parts deburring machine, just a large vibrating metal vat, and I had to replace the rubber cuz I ran it too long and it all got ripped out. When it was rock on metal it was loud as well, the rubber makes a huge difference. I gotta learn how to weld better, I’ve just been using an old Lincoln electric stick welder
@hillwooky12 күн бұрын
@@mudbrothersrocks Ha! I tried a rubber liner. I put five layers of Rustoleum truck bed liner in the keg. It took ten days to cure. The rocks tumbled perfectly, at first. After about two weeks I could hear the rocks starting to slide again. When I opened the portal it was as if I had never put it in there. The inside was perfectly clean and the black liner was reduced to black dust! I had a bit better luck with the PVC barrels. I put a thick coating of clear Flex seal liquid rubber in a 6 inch PVC barrel but I mixed the Flex Seal 1 : 1 with 60 grit silicon dioxide crystals. I saw a guy on KZbin using clear flex seal mixed with Silicon grit to make a soft lap to make cabochons. He said it lasted a very long time. I just opened that barrel the other day after eleven days of tumbling and about 85% - 90% of the coating survived. Wherever the coating was thin it wore through but it looks promising, After a lot of pondering and brain sweat I am thinking that an old tire would be the best tumbler barrel of all. Super cheap, very resistant to abrasion and big enough to hold 10 lb rock. I have seen several very well made car tire tumblers on You Tube made from a used treadmill and some caster wheels. They used plywood to cover holes with a porthole in one side. There is a museum that made a nice multi-tire unit and one guy even uses a Pilates ball inflated in the center of the tire! Used treadmills are often free on Craigslist. I got one a couple of weeks ago and there were several free treadmills to chose from. Last week I took an old tire from my neighbor's junk pile so I am half way there. Tumble on!

Wow, Montana is beautiful! Thanks for showing the drive and the hills around you. I live near the gem capitol, Franklin NC. So many garnets that they were kind of dismissed while in search of rubies, sapphires and kyanite. I guess it's all in your point of view and what you value. I would just be happy finding anything, really. Just seeing that view and being outside.

I’ve been running 5-6 tumblers for years and I’m baffled at how yours are so dirty. Granted, you only need to get the interior very clean to safely move to finer grits, but it seems like it would be an effort to do that while leaving everything else so filthy.
@mudbrothersrocksАй бұрын
I’m pretty sure the rollers create some friction on the outer surface of the barrels. The black rubber dust gets on my hands any time I touch them. Room isn’t sealed either so that doesn’t help. I try to just blast through changing them, I keep the inner rim clean at least so it seals but other than that I haven’t spent much time maintaining their outer appearance.
@copasetic1Ай бұрын
@ makes sense if there’s an external source of dirt. When I cycle barrels, it’s almost hard not to rinse the outside when I’m cleaning the edges, so this all struck me me as odd. The only times I’ve ended up with really silty outer barrels is when I’ve had a blowout.
@mudbrothersrocksАй бұрын
@copasetic1 I have had that happen a few times lol. What might be happening is some overspray from me oiling the bearings and the black dust is sticking to the metal? I should probably give them a good rinse anyway it may be the reason the outsides are wearing so much
@copasetic1Ай бұрын
@@mudbrothersrocks I’ll bet that’s it. A little oil overspray is going to be like a magnet for rock dust and dried slurry!

I’ve been rock hounding my whole life. The best luck I’ve ever had finding garnets in garnet rich areas would be in a streams and in that bank of dirt behind you. The garnets will stratify in layers and use a spoon to dig the layers out. I’ve seen harvesting stones like this more than 50% stones and 50% dirt. Thing is more often than not I find other precious stones with garnets like aquamarine and topaz, maybe even diamonds, not likely but possible

I noticed that, they got caught on the rocks of the hill while the fine dirt got washed down. Next time I’m there I’m going to try scraping the surface and see the difference in material I find. Thanks for the tip
@marylane6835Ай бұрын
Would you expect to find the same success at a reservoir? I'm wondering if the differences in hydrology would alter the natural stratification. With rivers/streams, there's a constant flow of water even if it's slow. The water at a reservoir would probably be more stagnant, and it definitely would not follow a consistent and uniform current. I don't know if anyone has an answer. I studied marine science, so I'm often a bit extra curious about these kinds of things.
@mudbrothersrocksАй бұрын
There is actually a huge band of the garnets at a certain level around the whole reservoir. I couldn’t get to it since the water was so high but in the summer when the water drops it reveals that layer. Unsurprisingly all the property around the reservoir was private so I could only check at the water itself and miles away up river. The garnets were all very small everywhere I went I never got anything bigger than pea size
