Shouldn't have lost anything as you would be picking up the item as it drops... unless the timing was not good.

The "float method" is a way to glitch the item. You're supposed to destroy the whole thing to make it fall after floating it.

Host will always be in the game. It's the duper who will join, drop, leave, rejoin.
