Wonderful views of the ancestral capital of the Bohemian dukes, the tram is the most important means of transportation before bus and metro for visiting the city and discovering its romantic charm 💕. The Prague tramway has been an integral part of the city since the Hungarian Habsburg dynasty, first as a horse-drawn carriage in 1875, then with the arrival of the electric streetcar in 1891. For tourists, the streetcar is the best way to get around Prague, between the bus, streetcar and metro. With 22 lines, you'll be spoilt for choice to get where you want to go. Lines 22 and 23 are the most popular with tourists, with the Tatra T3 streetcar (in service from 1962 to 2011), a relic of the Warsaw Pact that has undergone modifications to become the Tatra T3R.P, taking you right up to the gates of the seat of power (Hradčany). However, watch your pockets on the streetcar as it takes you up the capital's steep alleyways to the castle. For those nostalgic for the century-old 20th century or the Warsaw Pact, whether it's tram 41 or 42, the streetcar is never the same. With its tramway (Ringhoffer 1901) modified in 1923 and remaining in service until the early 1960s, it saw the end of Nazi leader Reinhard Heydrich, killed by Czechoslovak paratroopers in 1942. The Tatra T1 streetcar will take you on a tour of the Nové Město and Staré Město districts. This tramway, a pure Czech product (ČKD Tatra), in service from the early 1950s until 1980, has lived through many eras, recalling Dubček's Prague Spring of 1968, which advocated socialism with a human face, far from the dictatorship of the Warsaw Pact satellite blocs, crushed by T-62s on Wenceslas Avenue. Whether it's line 41 or 42, these historic streetcars are privately owned, just as it's possible to drink a beer in a Cold War-style streetcar belonging to the same operator. With over 150 km of track, Prague's streetcar network is one of the most extensive in Europe. Infrastructure is being renewed on older lines and new extensions are being built. In 2028, the new design of Prague Central Station will improve passenger mobility, with a new streetcar stop right in front of the terminal and connections to the future Masaryk station as well as to other destinations in the city. A study carried out in the late 2000s on Prague's streetcar network revealed 98.9% reliability for Tatra T3s built between 1962 and 1997. The 347 Tatra T3 streetcars were upgraded to T3 RP between 2003 and 2014, with the installation of power capacitors (Alstom/Cegelec IGBT transistors), a passenger information system and non-slip flooring. At the same time, the most damaged T3 models underwent radical bodywork reconstruction between 2003 and 2008 by Aliance TW Team. Between 2006 and 2021, 35 Tatra T3s were transformed into low-floor T3R.PLF versions, with passenger information systems and green LED strips. All these improvements will keep Tatra T3s in service until 2030. Between 1986 and 1990, Prague's first one-way tramway (with a driver's cab at each end) was built. The Tatra KT8D5 was also the first articulated streetcar to be used in one-way areas. The 51 Tatra KT8D5 streetcars were converted into Tatra KT8D5.RN2P streetcars using the same configuration as the Tatra T3R. PLF streetcars, with a fully lowered floor, IGBT processor, passenger information system, green door backlight strips and brake energy recovery system, between 2005 and 2022, when further Tatra KT8D5 streetcars were purchased from other operators to cope with the shortage of vehicles of this type. Following Tatra's demise, the reshaping of the industrial landscape in Central Europe led to the emergence of a new player: Škoda, now part of the Volkswagen Group. A multimodal subsidiary of the group, Škoda Transportation produces road and rail transport vehicles, from buses to trains and streetcars. Skoda Electric, which is primarily an internal equipment manufacturer, also produces trolleybuses. In 2024, Škoda Electric acquired the electrical branch of Vinci, which until 2010 had belonged to Cegelec. In 2002, Alstom was acquired by Cegelec, which until 1990 belonged to ČKD Tatra. They were designed in response to the Prague PID network contract for 60 part-floor unidirectional trainsets. The 14T series streetcars, named Elektra, were designed by the Porsche Design Group. The special feature of these streetcars is their ability to climb gradients of 8.5%. Following the appearance of cracks on all 59 Elektra streetcars delivered between 2007 and 2009 (the 60^th having been damaged by a Tatra KT8D5), the entire fleet of Škoda 14T streetcars was immobilized in 2014 for inspection and modernization with a view to returning to service in 2020. In 2009, to meet a new demand for vehicles to replace the older T3 and T6 models, Škoda launched a low-floor, easy-to-maintain three-car streetcar with wooden seats. However, in 2015, a new version of the Forcity Alfa 15T was launched: the 15T4. This one includes a number of new features, such as air conditioning, free Wi-Fi, new PVC seats and a redesigned yellow front, which is easier to maintain thanks to the use of fewer parts. Between 2009 and 2019, Škoda Transportation will deliver 250 units of its Forcity Alfa 15T to PiD Now you know as much as I do. Good evening.

Those trains seem quite short. In S.Africa our iron ore trains run up to 342 wagons in regular service. (Countryside is flatter (1:100 gradient, and our trains are slow, about 20 hours for 800+km) I presume those weird-looking wheels on the tops of the wagons have to do with automatic unloading?
@followthedamntraincj5058

actually these are quite large for Europe; They share tracks with other trains, also passenger trains, and the mining company sends multiple iron ore trains down the line every single day Yes they're for automatic unloading

Large objects often appear to move slower than smaller objects because of a phenomenon called the "speed-size illusion," where our perception of speed is influenced by the size of an object on our retina, meaning larger objects cover less visual angle when moving at the same speed, making them seem slower to our eyes; additionally, larger objects generally have more mass, making them harder to accelerate and change direction quickly, contributing to the perception of slower movement.
