Great video! Bushy Run was a significant battle because it showed that British troops had learned from their experiences during the French and Indian War. They not only held out against the natives in an ambush but even routed them. Bushy Run is also interesting because of the unusual and diverse array of soldiers who fought on the British side: Highlanders from the 42nd and 77th Foot, the "Royal Americans" (led by mostly German and Swiss officers) and Bouquet himself, who was Swiss!

I used to work for CA from 2006-10. When the game was in development there were plans for an online co-op campaign and full historical Seven Years War/French Indian. With a small 1700- 13 colonies campaign including King George's War. Plus 60 maps and 180 units that were never added. Sega rushed us to release it by March 2009 when it needed another 6mo. The lost potential seems to have been picked up here. Great work honeybun.❤

At this battle, the Black Watch suffered 65% casualties and became a royal regiment for their gallantry. They attacked the French breastworks FOUR times and were the only British troops to make it in. I know that there are limitations with Empire Total War, but historically the Highlanders would have been wielding broadswords when they leapt over the breastworks!
@oliverjonesmilitaryhistoryАй бұрын
Unfortunately, we can't include broadsword wielding Scotchmen. I don't even know if there is a unit model with that avaliable.

Very good. My only comment is that you could have added bagpipes music for when the Highlanders charged! The British army was the only place where the Highland pipers could continue playing their "weapons of war" following Culloden.
@oliverjonesmilitaryhistoryАй бұрын
That was the intention. The audio would've sounded wierd if we had done a fade out, and unfortunately we could not find a suitable recording of scottish military bagpipe playing. By this, it either wasn't playing a war song, had other audio layered over it. When they charged the playing would've become messy as the musicians ran, and we struggled to recreate that effect. Eventually we settled on no bagpipes rather than substandard ones.
@Weasel-vp8zkАй бұрын
@@oliverjonesmilitaryhistory Yes, fair enough. I think the pipers would have been playing the traditional battle rants of the clans at this time, rather than the regimental marches which were later created like "Hielan Laddie".

High production quality and enjoyable, but as a matter of fact, there were actually 4,375 British, and 4,980 French troops NOT 4,400 and 4,800, respectively, as stated in your text.

Well, I pretty much enjoyed watching the battle. When making the series of the French and Indian war, you have the soldiers fix bayonets with no chance of firing their weapons. It's like putting a cork in a bottle. Is there a way you can get a ring bayonet for the soldiers who can fire their weapons as well as they fight?

We are not confident at modding and thus we have to go for a certain period option on etw. So in short we either have plug or ring and as far as I'm aware they used ring anyway.

I think of this battle because of The Last of the Mohicans. The British made a noble stand, but they had to surrender the fort. Montcalm tries to make the Indian allies observe the terms of surrender, the chiefs of various tribes listened, and felt betrayed. Many warriors died fighting alongside the French, and expected to return home with the honours of war. In the film version, Montcalm gives Magua the go ahead to attack the British marching. In reality, the British begin to leave. Escorted by French grenadiers. Trailing the Redcoats, is a long disorganized line of American provincials and camp followers. As the column comes upon a clearing outside the fort, the Indians begin their attack. It lasts only a few minutes. When it was over, exaggerated reports of 1,500 dead fueled anger among New England colonists. The truth was that 75 were killed. Of the 500 taken captive, many are ransomed back within a few days. What should have been a great victory, leaves Canada in peril. Without their Indian allies, the French will lose the war for North America.

The action was not based of the Last of the Mohicans, we tried to keep it as accurate as possible.
@Weasel-vp8zkАй бұрын
@@oliverjonesmilitaryhistory I remember that in the Last of the Mohicans, the British soldiers were firing their muskets at the natives. However, as you have correctly shown here, the British were not able to fire back because they had surrendered their ammunition to the French!

The battle was costly to both sides. Johnson's friend Hendrick was killed, Williams dead. The campaign ended in a stalemate. The bright spot in the campaign of '55 was the British achieving victory in Nova Scotia, formerly the French colony of Acadia. In the darkest chapter of the French and Indian war, 10,000 Acadians were removed by force.

Finally. I have been searching for ETW FI War content since the inception in 2009. This series is very well made, historically accurate and the production quality seems to go up each episode. Thank you for covering the whole war. I am surprised about the lack of FI war content given due to ETW's time period. Maybe its how rather substandard episode 2 campaign is - it feels like something's missing.

Some of the soundtrack used is from PBS The War That Made America. The uniforms with red trim and blue facing are either the standard British artillery crew, or the colonial provincials using the TW Hessians model.

Thank you, Oliver. How accurate is this depiction of the Battle of Hlobane? Writing from South Africa.
@oliverjonesmilitaryhistory8 ай бұрын
It's as accurate as we can get it. We've approximated unit sizes using the order of battle from the wiki. We've tried to get the zulus to act relative to how they did by the positioning of our units which we achieved to some extent. What you see on screen is us trying to work with the map that most closely resembles the actual battlefield. I would say this is more a depiction of events. There are plans to redo this series at some poimt, although I cannot say when.

What we actually see here are Dragoons getting off their horses... and then immediately running away. I really wish I could say that you were bad at this, but fucking up this consistently suggests deliberate action.
@oliverjonesmilitaryhistory Жыл бұрын
Right. First off. This battle is not being played to win. It is played to simulate the Battle of Hlobane where the British suffered a crippling loss. Second, you're right. It is deliberate. Because of the way the mod works, we have to force our troops to break (and that's when they're being set to 0 morale by us), unfortunately forcing us to deviate from truth, but necessary for us to lose. We can win, but we aren't supposed to. This was a British loss, so we are trying to lose as accurately as possible. Forgive me being pedantic, but dragoons do not feature in this mod at all.

With the numbers they had, totally. You just need to have a tight formation (or a formation better than that of the Anglo-South African army, as shown).
@HellMac Жыл бұрын
The British were using weapons made to cause death from distance but once the opponent got close the slaughter was inevitable. Just like the Macedonians against the Romans, sarissa against gladius. Of course the British were heavily outnumbered, should they've been 1/3 of the Zulu army, the battle would have had a different outcome.
@oliverjonesmilitaryhistory Жыл бұрын
I have no reason to object. Perfectly true, however there were many factors that resulted in the loss, not just numbers, albeit that is one of the major ones.
