Well, I pretty much enjoyed watching the battle. When making the series of the French and Indian war, you have the soldiers fix bayonets with no chance of firing their weapons. It's like putting a cork in a bottle. Is there a way you can get a ring bayonet for the soldiers who can fire their weapons as well as they fight?

I think of this battle because of The Last of the Mohicans. The British made a noble stand, but they had to surrender the fort. Montcalm tries to make the Indian allies observe the terms of surrender, the chiefs of various tribes listened, and felt betrayed. Many warriors died fighting alongside the French, and expected to return home with the honours of war. In the film version, Montcalm gives Magua the go ahead to attack the British marching. In reality, the British begin to leave. Escorted by French grenadiers. Trailing the Redcoats, is a long disorganized line of American provincials and camp followers. As the column comes upon a clearing outside the fort, the Indians begin their attack. It lasts only a few minutes. When it was over, exaggerated reports of 1,500 dead fueled anger among New England colonists. The truth was that 75 were killed. Of the 500 taken captive, many are ransomed back within a few days. What should have been a great victory, leaves Canada in peril. Without their Indian allies, the French will lose the war for North America.

The battle was costly to both sides. Johnson's friend Hendrick was killed, Williams dead. The campaign ended in a stalemate. The bright spot in the campaign of '55 was the British achieving victory in Nova Scotia, formerly the French colony of Acadia. In the darkest chapter of the French and Indian war, 10,000 Acadians were removed by force.

Thank you for covering the whole war. I am surprised about the lack of FI war content given due to ETW's time period. @oliverjonesmilitaryhistory

I would argue that the French and Indian War was almost entirely a different conflict due to the ways of engagement that often confused commanders who were unused to fighting in the colonies and the extensive use of Native American Auxiliaries. Most European historians agree that it was part of the Seven Years War, but since armed hostilities commenced two years earlier than the declaration of War in 1756, I would classify it as a cause of the Seven Years War, although not the sole cause.

Braddock should have used scouts and flankers. The British column that marched on Fort du Quesne was defeated like the Romans at Teutobourg Forest.
@oliverjonesmilitaryhistory

Braddock was racist to the Scouts (Often calling them things such as 'Damned Natives') and was generally disrespectful to their culture so many Native Americans just left, meaning he had a crippling lack of those essential scouts and Native Flankers who knew the environment better than him. Eventually, this callous disregard would prove fatal for him.

Thank you, Oliver. How accurate is this depiction of the Battle of Hlobane? Writing from South Africa.
@oliverjonesmilitaryhistory
@oliverjonesmilitaryhistory 6 ай бұрын
It's as accurate as we can get it. We've approximated unit sizes using the order of battle from the wiki. We've tried to get the zulus to act relative to how they did by the positioning of our units which we achieved to some extent. What you see on screen is us trying to work with the map that most closely resembles the actual battlefield. I would say this is more a depiction of events. There are plans to redo this series at some poimt, although I cannot say when.

@oliverjonesmilitaryhistory
@oliverjonesmilitaryhistory Жыл бұрын
Right. First off. This battle is not being played to win. It is played to simulate the Battle of Hlobane where the British suffered a crippling loss. Second, you're right. It is deliberate. Because of the way the mod works, we have to force our troops to break (and that's when they're being set to 0 morale by us), unfortunately forcing us to deviate from truth, but necessary for us to lose. We can win, but we aren't supposed to. This was a British loss, so we are trying to lose as accurately as possible. Forgive me being pedantic, but dragoons do not feature in this mod at all.

The British were using weapons made to cause death from distance but once the opponent got close the slaughter was inevitable. Just like the Macedonians against the Romans, sarissa against gladius. Of course the British were heavily outnumbered, should they've been 1/3 of the Zulu army, the battle would have had a different outcome.

You have to watch Zulu Dawn then Zulu to see everything in it's right order. Both films are masterpieces and capture the look and feel of the time , two of the best war films ever made, I wish there had been a third film to wrap up the Zulu war including the death of Prince Napoleon, battle of Ulundi and Colonel Woods actions. I would also love to see trilogy of films concerning the creation of the Bier republics and their two wars with the Brits who lied and cheated their way to seize the gold and diamond mines. The foul scumbag Cecil Rhodes and the controversy over the execution of Lieutenant Morant and Hancock. That would make a great generational epic. Along with the mini series about Shaka who created the Zulu kingdom the history of south Africa has always been full of fascinating events and characters

When the soldiers are in two rows the front line can fire from a kneeling position and don't need to stand up as they do in this I also have no idea why they break that formation and form squares
@oliverjonesmilitaryhistory
@oliverjonesmilitaryhistory Жыл бұрын
Point 1: Its the mod. The mod is 10 years old, and the earliest versions were made for Empire. I don't know why they do that, but they do, and it's beyond my power to stop it. Point 2: That is what they did at Isandlwana. When the Zulus crashed into them, they formed a loose square. Those who could escape, escaped, but some stood their ground. 400 were wiped out, out of the 800 there. Almost all redcoats were wiped out. Almost all of the Natives retreated without setting a finger on a single Zulu. But the reason they break formation is because they did. We aren't trying to win in this, we are trying to replicate what happened. With all due respect, you can win Isandlwana, but that isn't our aim here.

In great to watch a total war historical battle with accuracy to the event. I remember this from 11 odd years ago. How did you find the Zulu instalments?
@oliverjonesmilitaryhistory
@oliverjonesmilitaryhistory Жыл бұрын
I found them at least a year ago, after I found my deep interest in this conflict. I began making things that weren't strictly accurate, for example: British Culloden (one of my save names :/), however I created a KZbin channel based on an oath and a promise to provide as close as I could to what happened in these events. The Zulu installments could be found under the name Bangalore on page 13 of the Total War Forum, however it was wiped (not before I got the files). I believe it to be archived on a platform (if you search up Anglo-Zulu War Mod for Napoleon Total War) under the principle of archiving the forum, so all these mods are not lost. Due to delays, I was not able to release a tutorial video on it, and the installation process. For 'meh' accuracy, change using the preferences script, where you can set the unit multiplier. For 'Oliver Jones' accuracy, you need packfile manager, but with 11 years of Total War experience, I'm sure you won't need me to explain it.

How do you get such large British units?
@oliverjonesmilitaryhistory
@oliverjonesmilitaryhistory 2 жыл бұрын
Modifications. You can mod it simply with the unit multiplier code in program files, but that will increase the Zulu's by that same proportion, same with adjusting unit sizes through in-game settings. For specific amounts you need a modification software called PackFileManager. It is free, (somewhat) easy to install, and is simply the answer to any problems. Zulu's not breaking more often? Head into packfilemanager, and simply lower the morale value. It's so easy to use, that for every video, there has been 30 mins to two hours of modding done to get it JUST right. There are loads of great tutorials on how to install it.
