These beautiful, beautiful shadows... Thank you Paul! At the end - the 'imagined' ocean horizon line in the bright phthalo blue... and the depth creating schooner - it lifts the painting in a whole different category! The magic of art: the painting is so much more beautiful, than the photo!

Oh, Paul, isn't the world just beautiful?! And you are able to catch all this in your paintings. I was so drawn to this one, can really see the most colourful winter, feel the freezing air which makes my breath steam and the bright, crisp, not yet warming sunlight in the morning. I always admire the thoughtful, sophisticated simplicity of your works. You said, you want to finish the tree in the foreground later, so I can't say so much about this one, but the tree in the background triggers strong feelings of trueness in me. This tree (plus the shadows around) has personality, it feels like I remember 'this friend', one of the gnarled old trees I live with, here in the German countryside... This tree expresses for me a very special quality: it is not perfectly groomed, dressed up - instead it has the beauty of simply 'being'. So charming! The same with your 'imagined' house (left side). Every single object (distinguishable form) in your paintings seems to be cherished. I have seen you use these kind of halo-effects (the bushes) often, a genuine phrase of yours? There is of course so much more. All of this makes for me the difference, which makes the difference... I apprechiate so much that you put your process into public! I have the impression you think entirely in contrasts (...but let them serve the mood of the painting). Is that right? Do you still have to think about these basic technical aspects? Which (of the many possible contrasts) you want to choose and combine in a specific painting? It's mastery: you put them together so elegantly, always as simple as possible - never to much - only pure 'necessity'. Beautiful, beautiful painting... Thank you so much Paul! Wish you the best! 👋 Morwen

Hi Paul, I’m new to watching your videos and they are spot on! They’re helping me so much in painting some of the reference pics I took when on vacation at the beautiful Bruce Peninsula, overlooking the turquoise waters from the rugged shores of Georgian Bay, Canada 🍁

Hi and thank you Paul 😊I tried the technique with some success but I ripped up the paper a bit in my efforts to get the beautiful colors -- my questions is this: What kind of paper are you using: hot or cold pressed ( if either) ? Thank you again for your videos!!

Hello Tanya, I use almost exclusively 140lb Arches bright white. You are probably pressing to hard or too sharply, think about a squeegee as you gently drag your Cred card or whatever you use. You will get great results, thank you so much for watching, I am here if you need me

You are really made for teaching. I enjoy different ways of painting birches. Would you find it easier to mask off your trees first with any different varieties of mask, like tape or masking fluid, or even masking film? I love using different types of masking and just got some fabric adhesive to try out the next time I mask something. You've inspired me to try a birch painting and layer it up like crazy. I love layering. What I don't know is how many layers can good thick paper take? I feel like the paper stops taking layers after a while. Do you know? Thanks for another great video.

Thanks Kandicookheller, I seldom use masking, mostly because I don’t like the hard edges it leaves, also because it is better to develop your brush work. I only use 140 lb mostly, thank you for watching

I'm so happy I found you to learn from. Newburyport is one of my favorite places to visit and Gloucester and Rockport Mass are my absolute happy places. I live in beautiful Vermont but it has no ocean, which I just love. I just am so happy you paint my places I want to be in and hope to visit again soon. I used to go twice a year every year. Subscribed! It’s such a pleasure watching your complete mastery of watercolor. Bravo! I discovered your channel today and I’ve been working my way through several of your videos. I can’t wait to try out your suggestions. In one of your videos, you incidentally showed how generously you load the brush from your palette, which was great to be able to see. I would vote for more of that palette viewpoint in videos. Anyway, clearly you’re a great painter, and I hope you will continue to upload videos. Thank you, from Martha in Minnesota.
