It literally is a perfect movie in my eyes. I always describe it as "cake" or "dessert." It's a treat for all the senses, and I love how deeply everyone working on the story, especially the writers, directors, and actors, clearly understood Jane Austen's work and the kind of writer she is. Too often today, Austen gets a reputation as a writer of romances, but she's not. She writes scathing, hilarious social satires, and the only reason they feature romances/marriages is because that was the main concern of the class of wealthy young women she was writing about (the class she belonged to and knew best.) If the main concerns of her characters had been jobs and careers, she would've written her satires about that. Austen's works aren't love stories, they're her version of "The Devil Wears Prada", and this movie GETS that. It's one of the only Austen adaptations I've ever seen that genuinely captures the mischievous humor and pointed comedy of her books. Plus, it's genuinely so emotionally moving despite how funny and mean it is, because it's so *real*. Everyone knows an Emma, even though she's a satirical exaggeration. Some of us are an Emma! We all know what it feels like to be constantly working to live up to people's idea of you, to feel like you're not good enough for someone, to feel like you're much better than someone and then feel snobbish for thinking it. The film doesn't shy away from any of it. It lets Emma experience all of those things, eat humble pie when she goes too far, and feel what it's like to actually care about someone else more than you do yourself. It's a full emotional journey, and the wedding scene at the end is the cherry on top. It feels like the final scene of a play where all the actors come back on stage, even the ones whose characters have died. The music, perfectly combining Emma's musical motif with Mr. Knightley's, is just sublime. The way the final scene ends with her closing her eyes to mirror the first scene beginning with her opening them. This will go down in history as one of the best movies of this era and of cinema as a whole, and it damn well deserves it!
