This is what I am talking about! I already ordered mine as the Stuka has always been one of the most remarkable and ugliest beautiful planes from WWII. I tried picking up as much as I could from the video for my own planned build as I love the balsa covering. What an innovative build!

I have been warned about the short nose of the Guillow's kit giving the operator a very hard time regarding inside placements and balance. This is obviously a tricky replica to fly however, you defiantly have demonstrated excellent skills!!! really enjoyed your vid.

Beautiful build. I noticed you had holes in your firewall? Are you using toothpicks to secure the the plastic cowl? I'd love to see how you've attached it on the cowl side
@punkworkschannel
@punkworkschannel 10 күн бұрын
Yes, holes in the firewall and toothpicks in the cowl side. This set up is really to hold the positioning, the tension in the rubber is holding the cowl to the firewall. Thanks for you comment!

I have just started to build the Guillows Spirit Of St. Louis and find it very different and challenging form their other models. Your video is so informative and I find it a great resource as I move through the building process. Maybe you can answer one question- why do the plans call for adding 1/16" stringers to the nose along with tissue, when it only gets covers with the plastic cowl? Thank you-
@punkworkschannel
@punkworkschannel Ай бұрын
My build in is highly modified and I may have changed a lot of what the plans called for as rubber power. I think the stringers add structure and strength for when the rubber motor is compressing the plastic cowl. I'm not sure about the need for tissue under the cowling, maybe a bit more strength? The great thing about these model kits is the ease of modification.
@GeorgeYeremian
@GeorgeYeremian Ай бұрын
@@punkworkschannel Thanks, that makes sense. I have added stringers but will forgo the tissue, especially where I build as a model display and I don't need the added strength.

Built an old Eindecker back in the 70s that was sheet construction, but because gear was so heavy back then, it was a rudder only model, with and old Ace Pulse radio system. Power was a Weber .049 diesel motor. Covered the model with clear Dope and talcum powder to seal the woodgrain, then a light coat of flat beige / tan to simulate the old doped linen. It flew ok, but because everything was heavy back then, once the motor ran out of fuel, the glide path was steep, and required tall grass to avoid damage.

I used the tissue paper that was supplied with this kit. Cut the paper slightly bigger than the area that you want to cover. Use a glue stick around the outside edges of the frame and apply the tissue. Wet the tissue paper and let it dry to shrink it tight. That's the basics, hope that helps. Good to hear your building balsa wood models!

I think that if you could get a PASS system installed, it might overcome some of the inherent instability issues of the Mitsubishi Type Zero. I have a T-28 Trojan that due to the front wheel being very slightly more weight than the wing wheels, it was causing a decent amount of "nose down" and I was having problems trimming it. I forgot I had a PASS system in the airplane and I just flipped the switch and the gyroscope and GPS started to level the plane. I know I know, if your a seasoned pilot it feels like cheating. But it can really come in handy especially during initial testing and first flights. It's not a full time system, you can turn it off. Now I did finally adjust the CG very slightly back (about 2mm or so) and put a small washer a little more weight than the fwd gear and with PASS it finally stabilized and flew really well. Turned it off to gain all functions and remove the travel limiters on the control surfaces (PASS in beginner limits travel on ailerons/elevators/rudder) so you don't overdo it until you feel more proficient. Wonderful build on that Zero!! I love the classic balsa and monokote airplanes. That is more to me an authentic build!!
