What a lot of people never got with this scene in the movie, is that he showed mercy to Edward, The Black Prince of Wales and Future King. Later on, he would joust with him again knowing that he is the Edward. On both accounts, he showed him mercy, by allowing him to finish and then by jousting with him knowing who he was.

It's all there, black and white, clear as crystal! You stole Fizzy Lifting Drinks. You bumped into the ceiling which now has to washed, and sterilized, so you get nothing! You lose! Good day, sir!

One thing I'm confused about is how did Wonka even know in the first place? Did an Oompa Loompa tell him quietly? Did Wonka have a secret camera hidden somewhere to see Charlie and Grandpa Joe drink Fizzy Lifting drinks? Or did he just assume that happened, knowing the scene was only focused on those 2 for about 5 minutes?

I think I was 7 or maybe 8 when this movie came out and I hated it. Obviously I couldn't understand the subtle humor. Now that I am an old man lol I thoroughly love this movie and all the characters performances.

I can't be the only person who thinks Wonka wasn't actually mad at Charlie, can I? Wonka didn't care that Charlie broke the rules, he knew Charlie was the right choice, but needed to see if that would change if he yelled at him. Charlie gave back the gobstopper despite Wonka's out burst, thus passing the test.

I'm sorry, but Grandpa Joe had NO RIGHT to yell at Willy Wonka like that!! He watched his family fall into ruin by spending money on Tobacco, got up and started dancing at the chance of free chocolate (Sorry, not a fan of "I got a Golden Ticket") and he nearly ruined Charlie's chances of winning the Chocolate Factory by stealing the Fizzy Lifting Drinks cuz IT WAS HIS IDEA!!!

I can understand Wonkas frustration here he really wanted Charlie to win he knew deep down it would be him but there was great disappointment and let down in the end until he gave the gobstopper back.
