Liszt transcribed this lovely work for piano solo and incorporated it in his great HARMONIES POETIQUES ET RELIGIEUSES. That cycle was inspired by the poetry of Alphonse de Lamartine, although this is the only one of its 10 pieces to be based on an actual setting of a Lamartine poem.

Faszinierende, orientalische, fantasievolle, impressionistische Klänge - nach der schwierigen Partitur hätte ich mir das Klangerlebnis nicht so toll vorgestellt ! Brigitte Gutmann

Severe and forbidding. Not a comfortable listen, but composed at a time of great emotional turmoil, death of his youngest daughter during typhoid epidemic, and the beginning of a serious alcohol problem. The title is pretty accurate - there is something experimental about this score. . Not surprisingly, this person who thought he knew his Sibelius, had not heard this piece before. It is to be performed in the Martinborough Music Festival, New Zealand, in September this year.

Seeing the thumbnail score and hearing the very classical opening had me extremely skeptical - but I'm very glad I gave this a listen. I like it better than Clementi or Hummel. Also a real treat to hear it on a fortepiano.

Amazing storytelling, Mel Bonis paints glorious canvasses of piano sound. She should be played by everyone.

Greetings! Long time, no see. How is life going? Hope you are doing well. Do you still remember me?😄
In C major G-A-C does indeed correspond to szó-lá-dó. Also Desz-dúr is the same as D-flat major. (German uses similar terms, for them D-flat is Des.)

The mere fact this orchestral piece can be realized on a single piano - and so well - is amazing. As is the piece itself. Mel Bonis was, without question, one of the greats.

Didn't this begin as a solo piano piece, part of a suit of seven pieces, three of which she then orchestrated?
