Great break down of everything. how it works and why, where it doesn't wor k and why it doesn't work but most importantly how to kake that work after all. My question is why you can't use the non dyadic time signature of 2/3 woth two dotted quater notes or 4 dotted eoght notes, 8 dotted 16th notes, 16 dotted 32nd notes, 32 dotted 64th notes? Maybe even one dotted half note?

I can probably count in one hand how many times I’ve commented on KZbin videos. But I just gotta say this was the best explanation of minor scales I’ve ever seen/heard in my life.

I know this video was posted 8 years ago but this is something I've should've watched when I began making music. I took the natural path which believe it or not, I never had an issue with taking, in fact I actually liked my music MORE when I would experiment with notes rather than using the rules. Then I met a bunch of classical composers, guitarists/singers, Japanese influenced EDM producers where all of them would tell me my music is terrible and would constantly tell me my music is off key (which it wasn't) and ever since this has been happening (which has been happening for over a year) I just haven't been able to make music, and music is the only thing I do as a hobby. Sometimes I just sit here for 4-5 hours straight crying that I just can't make anything since I learned so much music theory already, and I'm so glad I finally found someone, even though it's been almost a decade since you made this, who's trying to explain that it's not all black and white, because it's not! You have the right idea, and there's so many people out there who don't, I don't want to make classical music, I don't want to make Jazz, I just want to sing and make pop music and so many people just don't get it. Thank you so much for this video, it really helped me get out of a rut, otherwise I would have probably quit. ❤

Also something I wanted to add is I actually DID learn some theory before I even wrote my first song, it's just when people were telling me take it further than necessary that's when it became miserable.

What do you mean longitudinal waves dont happen in the body of a fluid? They do, its transverse waves that cant propogate through fluids (and air).

Scales are kind of like the rainbow, aren't they? You wouldn't paint with the whole rainbow as a continuous spectrum unless that was a very intentional motif you were going for. Likewise, unless you're making a point of using notes in sequence, like as an arpeggio, you're better off being more selective about which notes you're using and where. Like with what you said about space, less is often more. I don't paint and I'm very much so a novice with music composition, so please tell me if my understanding of this is completely off.

How is 6/8, 9/8, or 12/8 different than 2/4, 3/4, or 4/4 with triplets? It seems to me the only difference is with the 8 on the bottom everything in the piece is triplet based and that might be easier to write but in actual application I don't see any real difference. Why is Nothing Else Matters by Metallica in 6/8 compound time but a blues shuffle in simple time. They both have a triplet feel. It just seems that they are written out differently but in practice there is no real difference.

Top Number : A total of beat value in one measure Bottom : Which kind of note that will use to count each beat in the top number* (*1 = Whole note, 2 = Half note, 4 = Quarter Note, 8 = Eighth Note, 16 = Sixteenth Note, etc..) Ex. 3/4 = 3 quarter note in one measure, 4/4 = 4 quarter note.., 10/4 = 10 quarter note... Ex2. In 4/4 it didn't limit to use only quarter note but you can use or mix subdivision note like 1 whole note, 1 - 2 half notes, 1 - 8 eighth notes, 1 - 16 sixteenth notes or 1 - 4 sets of triplet as long as it value equal to 4 quarter note. This is the same as any other time signature. Other than note value is how to count and how to add accent/feel into note. 6/8 won't have same way to play or feel like 2 measure of 3/4. Because 4 is common time (3/4 basically 3 quarter note which have accent and count: ONE TWO THREE) and 8 is compoud time (6/8 basically 2 groups of 3 Eighth note but add accent and count: ONE two three TWO two three) 6/8 and 12/8 could be similar to each other bacause of same compound time and same way to count note group (Accent on first beat of each group) but 2 measure of 6/8 won't be the same note pattern or have feeling like 12/8. As a drummer if you can count and understand how time signature work. it will surely help alot. It might feel confuse at first but that's just a trick of note value math mix together with art of music and rhythm.

Do you know the book "Ultralearning" by Scott H. Young? You are nothing more than a successful ultralearner :D I recently came across the book "Ultralearning" by Scott H. Young, which talks about very effective learning styles and its methods. In my opinion, you are nothing more than a very successful ultralearner, even if unconsciously. Everything you teach us here, especially the way you teach us things, points to an ultra learner. (The book is a good idea for your podcast or for your music theory channel :D ) I also wanted to say thank you for explaining music theory in a very different but effective way. The way you explain things is excellent. You go much more into the whole concept (Ultralearning) itself than just some simple example in Cmaj. Because you are an overthinker, I just wanted to tell you that you are not alone. I also feel burnt out and everything is kind of overwhelming and too much, and I'm only 25 years old. I'm a computer science graduate from Germany and have been a freelance software developer for 3 years, but have now taken up the "music" project again. I played piano, guitar (each for a year) and electric guitar (5 years) as a child and teenager. Four years ago, I even produced music for a over year with the DAW FL Studio - unfortunately all unsuccessful, due to bad teachers, but above all due to my very poor learning style. I'm currently tackling music and producing again with the help of an ultralearning project. Your videos are helping me a lot. Thank you!

How is there that I find on the internet 2 "ways" of thought around modes. One is this one - root notes stays and this shape of scale formation is shifted (so pitches in the scale differ) and the other is that the root starts from another note of the scale but all pitches stay the same. Is this internet misinformation or I'm not getting something? Truly the idea presented here gives more merit as different pitches give more practical use.
