Hi, i have the exact same Carrier furnace 58GS series 130. I don't really know anything about furnaces and it stopped turning on recently. In my case, the pilot light never turns on and there's no sparking at all. Is the pilot light normally supposed to be lit all the time? Or is only supposed to come on right before the furnace is supposed to produce heat? I turn off/on the power to the furnace and I can "hear" power going to the furnace, but no spark occurs. And when I try to manually light the pilot light, nothing happens either. Does this likely indicate that the pilot assembly needs to be replaced? Do you have a part # for this so that I can search for it online? Or could it be a problem with the igniter / lockout control unit (part 1007-100 LH33WZ512A) that is connected to the pilot assembly with a red wire? I recall about 20 years ago, that control unit was replaced when we had a furnace issue. Thanks in advance for any advice you can provide. 0:29

No, the pilot is not supposed to be on all the time. It only comes on when the igniter sparks and lights it. In your case, since the igniter does not sparks the pilot will not come on. 1. Take the Pilot Assembly out and then put it back in, make sure everything is connected securely; has good Ground contact with the bracket holding the Pilot Assembly and the big orange/red wire is secured between the Pilot Assembly and the Control Board. 2. If there’s no sparks (or Tick Tick Tick), your Control Board Module is probably bad/faulty because you have stated that you could hear the electric going into the furnace when you switch it to on. Below are those two parts: Carrier LH33WZ512A 1007-100 Spark Ignition / Lockout Control Board Module Robertshaw 1830-620K for Carrier LH680005 Pilot Burner and Igniter Hope you can fix it so that you can provide heat for your family. Thanks for your reply. My issue seems to be resolved after pulling out the red wire from the control board module and reconnecting it. Maybe there was a bad connection there, but not sure how that could happen as no one has touched the furnace for many years. Do you know what the purpose of the red wire is for? Is it basically to bring power to the pilot assembly to create the spark? The pilot assembly also has the green, yellow and white wires and not sure what these are for either.

Yes, the red wire is basically a high voltage power wire that makes the igniter sparks to light up the pilot light.

Unfortunately, my problem with no sparking at the ignitor started happening again, and pulling out and putting back in the red wire to the ignitor control module doesn't help anymore. I'm wondering if there is a way to test whether the issue is with the red wire or the control module. Is there a way to just buy the red wire from somewhere to try out?

@@dcccs if you have a multimeter, you could probably test the continuity of that red wire. I don’t where you can buy that red wire. Maybe you can search on eBay? I believe your control board has gone bad because it’s not sending the spark/voltage to ignite the pilot light.

Your gas tubes need cleaning so you don't get so much yellow flame and upward flame between the ends of the tubes and the exchanger inlets.

It took a while to clear the air out of the pilot gas line after your gap adjustment to.get the gas coming for the spark to ignite.

Yes, it did take a little while for it to light the pilot light on the very first time. Later, it only takes one to two clicks for it to light up.

I disagree that this is a gap issue. I believe that your pilot gas setting on the gas valve needs to be turned up. This will make it easier for the spark to ignite the flame, and, will make the flame hotter so that it heats up the bi-metal switch quicker so the burners ignite sooner. Remove the cover screw on the pilot adjustment and use a small regular screw driver to increase the pilot gas flow.

Please watch the video entirely as I demonstrated about the gap between the igniter and the metal plate was too small which I think prevented the gas from igniting due to the lack of gas and oxygen mixture. I used a lighter to demonstrate that there was gas present, but the arc of the igniter was too short/small for it to ignite the gas or pilot light. Again, I'm not an expert on furnaces, but this is what I found out and fixed my pilot issue on my furnace. Over this very cold winter, my furnace comes on every time I call for heat.

Sam, I have exact same situation, cheap replacement igniter module but gap too small, won’t ignite pilot. HOW did you adjust the spark gap? Did you bend the igniter tip, relocate the spark module further back in its holder, or what? Thanks!

Steve, I just used a pair of pliers and bent the tip of the igniter back a little bit. If you watch the whole video, I showed the gap between the igniter and the bi-metal plate. I hope you can get your furnace running again soon.

Hi Sam, when you installed the new Pilot assembly, did you put a new fitting on? or keep the old fitting? In other words did you keep the old ferrule on that's on the pilot gas tube. I was thinking of either cutting the pilot tube if I had enough slack or install a new pilot tube or see if I can reuse the old fitting with pipe dope....

@@AmericanFarmerHVAC2024 , you don't need to make assumptions. just because it's old. If the person wants to learn and how to inspect it's fine. There are a lot of resources online these days. If you are mechanically inclined I'm all for DIY repairs as long as your are playing it safe.

Probably more so in your area since it sounds like you live in a much colder climate. If the furnace is located in much warmer climate like say parts of California that don't snow the furnace won't work as hard so it would last much longer. Same thing applies to cars that are located in the rust belt vs cars in the non-rust belt areas..

@@Stormcloud32 Hi Gary, I recently bought a couple of these igniter/pilot assembly units on eBay to keep as future spares (You can find them on eBay). You also might want to grab a Lockout Control Board for your furnace as a spare because this unit will most likely fail soon due to the age of your furnace. The Lockout Control Board recently failed on our furnace and we had to wait several days for a replacement part without heat. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Hey NS, depending on how yours was setup, the filter on my unit is to the left of the furnace. I normally buy generic filters from Home Depot and cut to the same size of the old filter.
