I remember this one from back in the day and I quite enjoyed it. Sure, it's primitive by modern standards (as is every game from the Atari age) but especially for its time, it's a pretty creative and unique idea.

runs a bit choppy on PC too even tho my rig can handle the highest settings no problem, it's not the hardware but the game engine that is the issue, it's a gorgeous fun game but is just a bit buggy espesially on consoles the Pc version runs the best by far but even that has some bugs far less frame rate issues tho than on console.
@DowntheRabbitHole0

Ooo that's not good to hear. I would have thought PC would be gold but obviously not. Could the developers be the issue? Did they maybe aim for one platform and forgot about PlayStation and clearly PC?

@@DowntheRabbitHole0 my guess is that since it's a small indie developer by just two guys they got a cheaper game engine to work with, hopefully they still add patches in the future but due to limitations of the engine it'll always will have frame rate issues and bugs to some degree. maybe some day a remaster could iron it all out or a sequel.

That thing can't replicate Super Sprint bc it's designed so you always have your fingers available on the buttons, so you can only turn a little, where as SS was a freespinning analog function. This thing doesn't look like that same analog effect; it looks like it's got two levels - slight turn, and spinout turn, depending on whether you turn the wheel a little or a lot. Too bad I'd love a good controller to play Super Sprint in the classic style, that game was awesome

In order of personal favorites, not definitive but what I can at least remember for now, from my early days of gaming which happened to be the best, lucky me: 1) Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver, 1999, PlayStation (remaster coming soon, btw!). My Cyberdyne Systems Awards to this series for Best Story in Gaming, Best Dialogue Writing (watch with subtitles), Best Voice Acting, kzbin.info/www/bejne/pp7RnGOXi8-md7ssi=YPN_JjLV1P2lswkM 2) Fallout 1, 1997, PC(though Fallout 2 is really great as well). Just an incredible amount of information very quickly to establish the world and lore with a twist of dark humor and irony, lays a foundation for the entire series in comedy and bleak warning. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nniWpnWdhtKHpM0si=GEmOr_NLHmIVn4q6 3) Siphon Filter, 1999, PlayStation. To a middle school boy this was the most exciting, high tech mind blowing world spanning spy action movie to hit consoles. James Bond had nothing on Gabe Logan. I loved this game and dorkly admit i tried to make an "Agency" club with my friends in 6th grade. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fHPXoquGrNubpNUsi=VIRpAk7MxzT1nQjp 4) Flashback, on MAC-OS, 1992/1994 for me? A favorite because this is possibly the first cinematic style game intro I ever saw, and a precursor to my later passion for cyberpunk/ Blade Runner anything. There were multiple version of this, with different music, but I had the MAC Play version on a triple disk with Marathon and Asteroids 3D. So this is the intro I saw, but truly you gotta watch the part with the data cube/ "missing memory message to me" ala Total Recall, that amazed me at the time. I had never seen ANYTHING like this style or genre at the time. maybe even my first sci-fi entertainment i embraced. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oqbQi4evrN6apK8si=OwDCqrWY3UImVRBm - just because that's the music I knew, and is BEST and then watch the 2nd cutscene in this where he opens the data cube, 0:50-1:40.... that's really still the intro IMO: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gWGXZI2Ol86ijbssi=O1GIvGHT2KHnsk-N cheers, gamers! Deus Ex is pretty amazing too but i felt i could do without it.

Honorable Mention - Covert Ops: Nuclear Dawn, PlayStation, 2000. An absolute hidden gem of 90s cinematic B-Movie terrorists-with-a-bomb action intro. They kidnapped the French ambassador - to which country, who knows! Riding a "ransomed" superspeed advanced rail train to Paris with a nuclear bomb - what escape plan? Keanu Reeves ala Speed , blasted out a helicopter then landing on a moving train and hanging onto the side...YES! Perfect weekend rental game, always stuck with me, took me ages years ago just to remember the name. It's the type of game that is almost a movie that could have been on Best of the Worst by RedLetterMedia. kzbin.info/www/bejne/ppq5oH-tbpipaZYsi=Jc13cPUeRI6eGK-b

Honorable Mention - Covert Ops: Nuclear Dawn, 2000, PlayStation. An unknown, wacky, dramatic, cinematic B-Movie action flick game that aims high and includes every trope of quintessential 90's terrorist thriller movies, especially in the double "lost in translation" feel of a foreign film based on american action... Was a weekend rental game and also feels like an awesome weekend rental movie you choose based on box art but turns out to be amazing. As I compile my list and links to their videos, comment coming soonish, want to say this: while watching and considering my own picks, one of the first 3 games i maybe considered, trying especially for pre-2000 era classic gaming of my youth, things that really influenced and really stuck with me - was also THIEF! I was so surprised and impressed when you mentioned it yourself! I probably wasn't even a teenager yet but loved The Gold Edition box I had. Love that series. The intro really establishes the aesthetic and atmosphere. but fyi - for your list, i'm pretty sure you're talking about the FIRST game, Thief: The Dark Project, and that is what you initially say...but in your outro summary, you say Thief: The Metal Age, which is Thief 2. Easy slip of the tongue, but then "the Trickster takes hold of mistakes. Remain vigilant, brother!" - ancient text of the Hammerite LOL

Gravitar was a beautiful game to look at - the color vector graphics were eye popping, and the way you could go down to the different planets was neat. The problem was that it was just too damn hard! If the designers had gone with an 8-directional joystick instead of the rotate/thrust controls of Spacewar! / Asteroids / Lunar Lander, to make it a little easier, I think it would have been a hit. As you probably know I have been messing about with my own version of Star Frontiers, and I almost hate to admit it but (it's almost hard to type) but I have made artificial gravity a reality. However it is an expensive reality which most ships cannot afford! Basically there is a rare earth element which when given an electrical charge increases the gravity around it for about two meters out. It is packed into rods and welded into the flooring. Which is also the reason why pirates always seem to tear up the flooring of any ship they take. Why do it? I thought about not doing it, but I think ultimately the problem is that one thing nearly all organic lifeforms in the universe have in common - probably - is that they originate on planets with a constant gravitational pull. They evolve to fit it, and as we have seen with our own astronauts, you can't live without gravity for very long without getting sick. This probably gets even worse for creatures that come from planets with greater gravitational fields than Earth. So I thought it would be interesting, and more believable, for high-end space ships to have cabins where you could adjust the gravity like a thermostat. Also, it's always fun when the gravity goes out and then comes back on, something you can't easily do if the gravity is always there or never there. And if you're counting on constant acceleration to supply the ship's gravity, that really complicates piloting the ship as you not only want to get to where you are going but you can neither go too fast nor too slow without hindering your crew. And!!!! Actually I'll just stop right there :-) Good video!

Nothing wrong with tweaking a few rules to serve the campaign Jerry, I did it often enough too. I kinda like your way of handling artificial gravity. Also, instinctively we just think in terms of people standing on the deck of a ship all the time so to constantly remind your players they are floating and all the problems that entails can bring down the fun element, I well imagine. Thanks for the kind words! I did have a different longer video I was working on but I just can't get it the way I like it. Might reference it in my next video instead of publishing. We'll see.

I haven't seen the movie but I get what you're saying. Maybe a single shot might do something. Maybe a blast from a flame unit. It'd probably still send them spinning in circles. That's the kind of thing that makes me not trust the film's writers. Usually things that make matters worse make movies more interesting. Only amateurs go for a quick cheap escape.

True enough Jerry. I don't mind turning a blind eye to a little bit of bad science if the rest of the film is good. Star Wars is coming down with examples or even Indiana Jones jumping rails in a mine cart is fine cuz the movie was good. But my players are not as forgiving as I am. Also, in the case of Romulus the film isn't good enough to forgive the error.

@@DowntheRabbitHole0 That's very true, especially the mine carts in Temple of Doom, if you are enjoying something enough you don't notice any reason not to enjoy it. Like the total absence of swearing in the movie JAWS or a reason why the aliens are trying to contact Richard Dreyfuss in Close Encounters of the Third Kind. It's as if our own minds have a way of saying - you should just shut up and enjoy the film. Maybe that is Spielberg's secret. He does something to get us to love the film right at the start and it allows him to get away with nearly anything in the rest of it.

Gunpowder has its own oxidizer, so it doesnt need an outside air supply. All modern firerarms will fire in a vacuum with no problem. SF sometimes gets the science wrong.

Aaahhh gotcha. I wonder if TSR was ahead of their times or has the gun industry always had an air supply like even back before the 80s?

@@DowntheRabbitHole0 I was thinking the Aliens franchise, based largely on the first two, and Star Frontiers. A pulse rifle is always welcome as well.
