Haley's attitude was fine. It bothered people that she remained confident in her abilities even as two of the judges repeatedly threw her under the bus. LA Times, May 12, 2011: "What do the judges have against Haley?" That came to a head on top-four night. Haley mildly protested when Randy Jackson said a song was out of her range, he acknowledged it was not. He told her she should have been doing runs at the end and she replied she wasn't sure about that, she thought it was beautiful as written (with a shout chorus). Judge Steven Tyler called out to Haley, "Don't listen to them! They're both wrong!" That led R. Jackson to repeat his criticism in a shout and a hurt Haley replied that "she heard him the first time." That night in an online interview with Ryan Seacrest, Tyler said Randy Jackson wasn't a singer and his criticism had made him mad. He stated Haley had delivered the song "like a blue plate special." He then volunteered, "The best singers have character. If you watch Reinhart up there, every bad comment she gets rolls right off. That's how good she is." Tyler asked of Seacrest, "The best singers don't always win, right?" Then expressed an astute observation, "The one thing I worry about, sometimes that character pushes people away."

Had American Idol had one vote per performer voting, as opposed to power-voting, Haley would have won American Idol in a landslide. She didn't win because the teeny boppers voted in mass and as many time as they could for their two favorite teenagers instead . Nonetheless. to everyone who watched the show that season, Haley was the true winner of American Idol. I just wished she hadn't stayed away from the record industry subsequently, because she's a born star.

Jimmy Iovine--co-founder of Interscope Records--was the mentor that season of Idol and he signed Haley. Her debut album was distributed at Walmart. The deluxe version had 14 songs. Since Iovine gave Haley the chance to create new material instead of just singing songs others had already written, Haley had co-writing credits on 13 of them. So far, so good. The first single though didn't take off. While there was some debate about which song should be the next single released, Iovine left Interscope to take BEATS (the headphones company) public. With the change in top management, dozens of Interscope artists were let go--including Haley. She never had the opportunity to do a proper tour to support the album. Fortunately, her music publisher was able to place songs from the album in TV shows, commercials, and a movie. So they agreed to finance and produce her next record.

Haley wasn't insecure, but wary. She had auditioned the year before and the producers had filmed her around Chicago and performing with her parents, only to have Simon reject her. She didn't plan on auditioning again. Someone from the show called her the day before and encouraged her to give it another shot. That's what she meant by, "you guys told me to come back." Haley has confidence in her abilities. In the later rounds, two of the judges began attempting to throw her under the bus by criticizing things like song choice to suggest she had give a bad performance when she had not. One night judge Steven Tyler cried out to her, "Don't listen to them, they're both wrong!" This led Randy Jackson to repeat what he had said in a shout.
