It's been three years since this video was posted and, though I'd love other representation, I'm still glad that we have Todd Chavez as an ace icon.

I had always known that something was up but I couldnt find the words. When I told my "friends" in high school they mocked me and claimed I was going to be the 40 year old virgin. I'm lucky i didn't really like my friends or i would have done something I would have deeply regretted. Nowadays I'm so indifferent about sex any references about it tends to take it a second for me to catch on. The only reason I want to have sex is because I want to have children. It's still hard for the people around me to understand my aseuxuality because they don't seem to understand how you can be in a relationship with someone and not engage in sex. I had a therapist point out that I would probably be able to acknowledge problems that tend to get clouded over with sex.

Damnnn, I didn't realise how starved I was for ace rep until I watched Bojack Horseman. Full honesty, the reason I started watching in the first place - besides the intriguingly dark bits - was to finally see an asexual character onscreen for more than a second. I entered with no expectations and was still blown away. He's a genuinely loveable character who I can actually relate to. Especially now that I'm a young adult, and the social expectation of sex is stronger than ever.

Awesome video, first time that I find a video about asexuality that totally matches my point of view hahaha when I first found out I was asexual, I heard that Bojack Horseman had an asexual character in the show so I immediately started to watch hahaha. It was awesome, Todd is perfect and represents me so well!!!! Btw, your accent is adorable

I’m recently discovering I’m on the ace spectrum (I suspected it before, but hadn’t experienced sex yet and still crushed on people so I wasn’t really sure). It’s strange though because I can’t quite put my finger on where I am on the spectrum. I don’t feel sexual attraction, but I can enjoy sex. It just takes me a really long time to become comfortable enough with someone to have sex with them. Sex is usually repulsive to me, but I still experience arousal and can still enjoy sex with a partner. Idk this stuff is complicated sometimes 😂

Another potentially ace/aro character is Luffy from One Piece. I don't really believe the creator, Oda, intended for Luffy to be asexual, but some people do. I definitely think Luffy is asexual, whether writing him that way was intentional or not.

Hey! Your video is soooo cool! 🥺 I'm an asexual homoromantic girl and I so needed to see this. I want people to know that asexuals are ≠ aromantic. I'm insanely jealous of Todd and Maude, like, dudes, I want one just like yours, dammit. Todd is an awesome character, and when I saw his ace story I just fell doubly in love. Really glad it's being covered like this, it's valuable to me. I'm still very often frustrated and proud of being asexual at the same time. I want a relationship, I want very badly to find a partner with whom we can platonically love each other, but it's so damn hard if he's not on the ace spectrum.... Thank you so much for your video, I really enjoyed your speech and visuals, it even lifted my mood 🫶🫶

I know this video is a couple years old, and my comment ar this point is rather pointless but... I appreciate your take on Todd from Bojack Horseman. I see a lot of videos going at his character for being "a bad asexual rep", when similar to what you describe, his arc in that show, was for me, a huge "AHA!" moment that made me realize Ace wasnt only a thing, but was also the first step to me realizing I was Ace and my lack of understanding that was the source of a lot of pain. And this was in my early 30s FFS! Finding this character, and what he represented, was a bug deal to me, still is, at that point, and i can only imagine how much wouldve changed had i been aware much earlier in life.

Hi! I was hoping to find a way to contact you privately, but can't seem to see a way, so hopefully you read comments. I'm looking to make a video essay on Short Term 12 and was checking out what else was out there. Loved your video! Did you have any copyright issues with the footage that I should look out for?
@dashKC3 ай бұрын
Hi! Thanks for commenting. The only copyright issue I had with this video was using Umbrella Academy clips. Short Term 12 is a very small film so I doubt your video will be claimed or striked. The whole film is ripped on KZbin for anyone to see and that video has been up for years. Good luck with your own video!

I gotta say, I do fit that stereotype of aces being kind of childlike and naive sometimes. In some ways I can be smart and all, but not in all ways, and I have a naturally childlike, goofball energy to me; it's just also wrapped up in spooky aesthetics. So Todd being that way, that kind of quirky weirdo, actually makes me like him even more as rep. XD

1% or less of the population is asexual. So the representation is just fine

This is an amazing video! I relate to Todd and everything that you said in your analysis so much I legitimately cried. When the lack of representation is pointed out so obviously, it makes you realise the full impact of not being able to see people who are like you in the media.

Loved this video, great for my film assignment lol. I also noted at 4:00 that Dr Ferreiro is almost shrouded in darkness, potentially symbolising the rebels lurking among the nationalists, unsure if this is a stretch lol but its a thought!
@dashKC5 ай бұрын
Aww haha, thanks :) Looking at it now, that’s a nice thought. In analysis, pretty much everything is a stretch but as long as you have the evidence to back it up and explain it, I can’t see why you wouldnt get marks for it. Like, Im looking at it now and see Vidal’s henchmen in the back almost like silhouettes, you could say some shit about how that represents that humans don’t commit this type of evil and therefore Del Toro is implying Nationalists aren’t human because they are lacking empathy or something like that haha. I dunno. Thanks for watching and commenting. Hope your studies go well !!

for characters that might be ace you forgot Lawrence of Arabia, Maria the Virgin Witch, and also Jughead from Archie is canonically asexual although he is a stereotype. Maria has people pressuring her to have sex and still is repulsed by it even before she is cursed to lose her magic with her virginity. I do not know if this can be surmised from the film but TE Lawrence from what I heard never perused any romantic or sexual relationships.

Pixar is the left part of the brain the one devoted to beauty, emotion and memory. Ghibli is the right part of the brain the one devoted to meaning, harmony and existence.

Pixar movies are profound, innovative, emotional and beautiful. You can actually feel that your inner childhood is still within you. Ghibli movies are hypnotic, surreal, spiritual and poetic. You can feel that your adulthood is always closer to you. Both are legendary Animation Studios in their own way. Their work is so incredible this is why Animation films is an art. 💚💙

I strongly suspect someone in the writer's room was ace. The asexual axolotl meme reference was a deep cut, and having Tim Gunn who has identified as ace publicly for years cameo in the episode where Todd accepts himself as ace and attends the first meeting HAD to have been on purpose. His arc in season 3 was so nuanced I cannot believe they weren't pulling from SOMEONE'S experience.

Not an Ace here, but I do identify as Pansexual. Just wanna say thay just because any sexual character could theoretically turn out to be bi or pan does not mean we are lucky or have representation everywhere. I think bisexuality in media is incredibly rare, especially of bi-men. We all still want to see ourselves in the media we consume, even if we could reasonably project that all our favorite characters might be bi
@dashKC6 ай бұрын
This is a really good point, thank you for commenting. I wish I could have articulated this at the time. And yes, where are all the bi men??!! Sure, any character could theoretically be bi but if they’re not actually saying it, it’s not exactly representation, is it. Thanks again. Hope you enjoyed the video otherwise.

Not really a mainstream but very popular in the podcast community. The main character of the Magnus archives is sex repulsed asexual and biromantic, Jonathan sims might not be the best ace rep as the podcast doesn’t revolve around his sexuality but it is stated clearly and he still gets romantic partners (ex gf he’s friends with, and currently bf he walks the apocalypse with) and his sexuality isn’t used as a joke or something weird. He was also written and is played by jonny sims (yes they have the same name) who’s ace and bi in real life. I think there was also another ace character in a different podcast but I don’t remember who it was atm. But if you’re interested in reading Alice olseman (the creator of heartstopper) has some ace and acearo character in their books, radio silence and solitude. Also jughead in Archie comics but riverdale completely ignored that

i really enjoyed this video, thank you! i especially appreciate your point that it is not just asexuals that are negatively affected by the lack of representation of asexuality in mainstream media, and overall societal awareness. the expectation that everybody is allo can often cause more self-hatred and confusion than the expectation that everyone is heterosexual, and it can harm allos who are and aren't directly involved with an asexual person. thank you again for making this video!! when watching bojack i didn't even realise that todd and yolanda weren't suited for each other, i fell into the same trap they did, assuming that since they are both asexual they must be a good match. i really appreciated how similar and complimentary todd and maude's personalities are, and it reinforces the point they make that you don't have to date someone just because they are also asexual alloromantic. furthermore, once emily realises that todd is asexual, despite her feelings towards him she accepts that a romantic relationship between them can't work instead of sacrificing her own relationship requirements leading to frustration and resentment going both ways - i think this illustrates how close emily and todd are, and how much she understands and cares for both of them. todd's desperation to try and fulfil her sexual desires in a way that suits himself also illustrates this point. i also want to mention how much i love maude's defence to this person she went on a date with and refused sexual contact - just going along with their "jesus thing" excuse instead of even attempting to explain the situation. ANYONE LOOKING FOR ASEXUAL AROMANTIC REPRESENTATION i urge you to check out the book "Loveless" by Alice Oseman, who is asexual themself!! another example would be Ca$h from the 2022 netflix reboot of Heartbreak High. you are valid, always.

My abusive fostet parent was a lesbian but had never heard of asexuality and treated my lack of interest as a symptom of autism, which she wanted to use as an excuse to enslave me through conservatorship. Had no internet access except in a limited capacity at school. Pretended to myself that I was lesbian and ended up in trouble for sexually harassing my girl crush (foster parent didn't believe I was really lesbian and said girl crushes are normal even for straight girls, maybe ace girls too?) Found out what I was soon after she threw me out, it was pretty obvious to my roommates.

When people say think of the children when someone brings up the LGBTQ+ community like it's a bad thing. Then why is it that Disney used anfrophromorthic animals to make the kids furrys (nothing wrong with furrys) what's the difference their both despised yet furrys are more and are treated like animals and not people. When will sis men and women writers get LGBTQ's ant the like to help on films to make them better. Before I knew I was ace, I made an ace friend in college who helped me realize I'm asexual around the same time I started getting feelings for her. We're together now and really happy. I didn't cling to her because she was ace like me. It just worked out that way. Being ace and finding love is totally possible!!!
