Actually these are 2 females. I was pretty certain after watching the video and when I went to the comments that does seem to be the consensus. Still quite fascinating. Perhaps more so because while they are known to engage in same sex sexual activity they usually have opposite sex “mates” although since they’re not monogamous maybe they don’t have partnership-type relationships anyway. If this is a “couple” there is definitely one that’s dominant and the other female is obviously more “needy” and dependent on the other. Of course it could be that the dominant one is the mother of the other. Or maybe they’re sisters and one is significantly older. Another possibility is that the dominant one is the matriarch of this group and the other female is looking to her because she’s frightened by the human presence or some other reason. It is a shame there’s not more educational material available. Although that might be because they weren’t discovered until I think the 1950’s or 60’s. That and the fact that they’re only found in one place on Earth, the almost always war-torn Congo where long term observation is dangerous.

There are some documentaries on KZbin regarding Bonobos out the wild. From what I've seen in both documentaries and research articles posted on the Internet from primatologists, unlike Chimpanzees, the female Bonobos are the alpha and lead their troops, not the males. Bonobos use genital rubbing to ease tension within the group. It's not just a "sexual" thing to them, especially female to female. I have seen humans use animals same-sex sex to defend homosexuality, however, most animal species don't use sex in the same way humans do. Young Gorillas and Chimpanzee males will mount each other as a show of dominance and even in play. They practice on each other as they see the mating that happens between their mothers and an adult alpha male. It's a learned behavior for them. Chimpanzee and Orangutan mothers will allow their young sons to mount them as well as this ensures their success as alpha males one day when they are older. In captivity, if the adolescent males and female siblings are not separated they will also have sex with each (which is why the breeding programs at zoos put the females on birth control until they can remove one of them to another troop at another zoo). I don't think in the animal realm that they would consider this as incest since that's a human construct. I could not tell if these were both two females in this group as I did not see the bum/genitalia on the one which I thought was a male. Usually, you can tell which ones are females from males because of their genitalia protruding, but if they are still really young then this wouldn't be the case as that develops as they reach puberty. I just think there really wasn't enough context in this video for any of us commenters to assume that any of this was about sex or mating. It seemed more about the one female comforting the other one, whether male or female. I love primates so I watch a lot of documentaries on them, watch zoo and sanctuary videos, read up on them, etc. Primates fascinate me. I don't believe I evolved from a primate, but I do think it's entirely possible to share DNA with animals since I believe we are all created beings from a Divine Creator (God, since I'm a Christian). (I do recognize that not everyone has the same beliefs as I do and that's fine).
