This fire reminds me of the Beverly Hills Supper Club fire back in the 70s, both buildings had no sprinkles or alarms.

I lived in the neighborhood behind and on the corner and we saw black smoke out our back window. I grabbed my camera and took quite a few shots as we walked around the front and side of the building. Employees were standing in front of the building at this time, seemingly unconcerned. There was a fence along the side of the building and I held my camera up and over to get some pics. All my photos went to a local news channel right away. We also contributed the photos to the investigation. I will never forget it as long as I live.

Why were 9 men sent in to protect furniture?
@mrfirefighter36021 күн бұрын
Because there were people trapped in the building. Conditions at first allowed firefighters to make interior attack but rapidly deteriorated on them trapping them.

I have 1/2" inch stable braid polyester safety rope and I want a rope grab device to use on steep roofs to do roof work I want it to " lock" while I am doing work with both hands in a specific roof location. If I slip and otherwise would slide off the roof. would this device catch my fall and work for me ? I need to walk up and down the roof frequently to get to new places to work. Will the rescuender work if I get a proper harness ?

I'm 40 years into my career in the fire service and served from probationary firefighter up to Chief of the Department. We are a mainly rural department and one of the busiest in our area and we've been using 5" supply hose since like 1988, our attack lines are all 1 3/4" with high flow nozzles and we sure as hell don't let people drive over our hoses! We have the cops shut them down! Every interior crew has at least one thermal imaging camera and 45 or 60 minute air bottles and a 3-4 person RIT crew ready to go at all times and we're 100% volunteer. It amazes me how it took the lives of 9 firefighters to bring the needed changes to a city department the size of Charleston.

The two things that stand out are the lack of concern about a group of missing firefighters and the complete absence of any type of coordinated rescue effort. Was incident command even aware that firefighters had gone missing?
@WhiteNoise4939 ай бұрын
In short, no they did not know who was missing because they had no established accountability system. They weren't even sure who was in the building.

Should’ve just been a defensive strategy and protect exposures or was it during business hours? Terrible loss of our men. I was 8 years old and my dad took us to Charleston a day after and we pulled up to the dilapidated building covered in ash.

All people should have been gotten out and then FVCK it let it go!! Just make sure it didn't spread elsewhere. There should have never been firefighters sent in there!! They had just done a walkthrough in 2006 and knew it was, well the first man on scene that was in charge.knew it was a widow maker. There was a million and one places for fire to be hiding in the ceiling. Was it ever confirmed how this fire even started?? Was it from a freaking cigarette??!! Of ALL things!! A God d@mned cigarette?!! Smokers should be allowed to take a few extra 5 minute smoke breaks here And there and non smokers should be allowed to take a few extra 5 minute non smoke breaks here and there. Because they WILL sneak out and smoke. I get it!! I just recently quit a few months ago but I still crave cigarettes. When you're trying to work but you're wanting a cigarette and you still have an hour left before break, you're going to sneak out 🤷🤷 When sneaking they're in a hurry. Cigarettes are usually not put out and just thrown down. Which I can't stand!! I never would throw a cigarette in my own yard let alone someone else

Ok 1 of the 1st things they should have done is vent the front windows when they 1st got there 2nd yes it was a truss roof but if you get there fast enough you can vent it as well . 3rd they should have just concerned themselves with the rear of the building from the outside only
@e.g.o.m.e Жыл бұрын
Wouldn't that be adding oxygen to the fire
@Sukainuu Жыл бұрын
South Carolina training advocates for creating a hole on the roof of a building to dissipate smoke if necessary, venting the front store windows would create a flashover and increase the severity of the flames. They actually did do this in this case, and a flash over had occurred, but it's not like in this case you had many options. I will agree that taking on the fire offensively was a mistake and could had possibly changed the outcome of this situation, but it is better that we all learn so something like this will never happen again.

Not to burst anyones bubble, but... That number is totally fake. Like, complete bullshit. Its been parroted around so much everyone assumes its legit, but any source that gets even close to saying this is completely unreputable, and any actual scientifc paper completely contradicts this number. Just went down a rabbit hole during an argument and wanted to make sure everyone knew, k bye!

I know at first it seems ridiculous especially as a cook in a kitchen, every kitchen has to have an inspector And re inspections for extinguishers and sprinklers. They died about 25min in, what they needed to hear wasn't forthcoming "brothers were coming for you, hang in there, were on our way" words no fire-fighter wants to really hear but if its the last transmission it gives peace .... radio communications was appalling, so unprofessional...so many errors of judgement made in moments of panic & desperation when calm thinking was needed...tragic it took 9 lives to make changes that should be routine..RIP Brothers

This is the worst type of comment you could possibly leave on a fire video. Especially one that depicts 9 LODDs. I don’t know if you’re a firefighter or not, but it is never our place to criticize other departments and say what “should have been done”. It’s easy to critique a fireground after the fact. I visited this video because today is the 2024 anniversary and I stumbled across this Godawful comment.

I was a volunteer fife fighter back in mid to late 80’s and we had 2 gas engines a rescue squad and an ent ambulance. The only one with a radio was the officer in front right seat. By my time on we had full turnout gear but no pass devices to tell others u were inconpacitated. I was in a few large house fires and a very large new two story vfw hall that was showing flames well through roof by time it was noticed it went to a 5-11 fast. Back then when it snowed it piled up quick. I remember coming off rig and being amazed firefighters were still being sent into a huge open area venue. When it was our time to go in there was no time to be worried. We trained and relied on it. I remember walking straight in for about 5-0 ft and could hear explosions going off and a small orange glow to rear . It was blazing but that’s all we could see. Found out after they pulled the plug and we got takin out that it was the store room and it was so hot that kegs of beer were exploding. Seconds after we were takin out the entire roof collapsed. I will never forget that night and I close my eyes and can picture exactly how this fire took my brothers away. Today it’s all math and way different training.
