We had a 1970 Ford Fairlane 500. It was a 2-door with green exterior and black vinyl interior. I can't remember the engine in it, but I think it was an 8-cylinder, automatic trans. Nice car, wish we still had it...

The Mark 3 Continental is indeed a masterpiece and you can tell just how perfect a car design is by how little modification needs to be done to make these a custom either do nothing at all and it's still gorgeous or slam it to the ground with slightly larger stock appearing wheels to just bring it that much further into glorious goodness

Best riding car I ever had was a 1973 Buick Electra Park Ave, 455, pillowed valour int, huge, heavy cruiser, pretty quick considering it weighed as much as a blue whale. Roomy, back seat😉

Convert inches to feet and the garage argument looks the most likely as house designers tend to work in whole feet. 222 inches = 18 1/2 feet, 215 inches = 18 feet minus 1 inch.

Although I'm a 50s-60s GM nerd I did not know this! But they repeated this a couple of years later with the Calais, right? In the narrative of yesteryear, it was targeted towards womenm, madeeasier for them to park. Or so I've heard. It should be easier for men too, but I've never been a woman, so I can't make a juste comparison. But I digress.... Thanks for uploading! Greetings from Sweden

Love your channel. Always something interesting to offer us. My older brother's wife drove a 56 clipper I was 12 at the time and just thought that clipper was the biggest most beautiful car I had ever seen and honestly, it was a nice looking car for the time. It's surprising when you think about Packard in general and their lack of having newer engines with newer technology. You'd think seeing as how they manufactured so many engines during World War II they would have learned from that technology and brought some of it with them after the war. Packard wasn't the only car company that had some bad ideas back then. Look at Studebaker, bleeding money everywhere and what car do they release to save their company? The Avanti. Without a doubt a truly fabulous automobile stuffed full of technology and cool European styling that absolutely no one wanted to buy. What were they thinking?

There was nothing "Short" about 215 inch ( Eighteen feet) long car; even in the sixties. My Guess is that Most Caddy owners, even in cities, had garages or off street parking, so a shorter, easier to park car, was not an issue.

I drifted off to imagining a universe where the El Morroco was a hit after the video and we had 1960s and 70s models. I think a Chevy crossed with Eldorado would look good depending on what car was fused with it. I could definitely see something like a early 70s Monte Carlo with a Caddy rear and interior trim.

Not sure what the mystery would be, it’s named Park Avenue and it’s obviously a more handy configuration for parking and driving in an urban environment. It’s one of the reasons people started buying Mercedes back then it’s because they could be handled in the city better
@michaelbenardo569511 сағат бұрын
This model came out in response to people complaining that their new Cadillac couldn't fit in the garage, but the 61 standard Cads were shorter than the 59 and 60 models, so there was less of a need for a shorter Cadillac.

A former boss (and Cadillac expert) told me these came about because wealthy women at the time had difficulty parallel-parking these behemoths in the larger cities. Sexist? Maybe, but the '76 Seville was hugely popular with women buyers mainly because of its size.

Ed, you produce my favorite youtube videos. I think your theory is underestimating the fact that Falcon and Fairlane shared wagon bodies since the '66 model year. It doesn't seem logical that Ford would go out of their way to produce a wagon with a defunct model name when they have gone out of their way to disguise the duplication the four previous years. I would like to add some empirical information. I could tell you I'm a car guy but, it was the summer of my kindergarten year and because an accident totaled our '66 Mustang, we were forced by circumstance to buy a new Fairlane in haste. we all hated it. it was an AM and heater car, rubber floors and all, or none in this circumstance. A week or two later, I saw our insurance agent down the block. He pulled up in a white 4 door Fairlane just like ours. I walked down to talk to him about it. The thing is, I could read a little. I got up to the car and it said FALCON. I knew about model designations. I pressed the guy like he was in on a conspiracy. (I was dinosaur level crazy about cars) "we have the same car, it's Fairlane". "yeah? mine's a Falcon." "that's not a Falcon, there is a Falcon right across the street. looks nothing like this" "I don't know what to tell you kid, that's what they give me to drive. I'm just out here trying to make a buck". i studied the car the whole time he was selling my neighbor insurance. here are the list of noted differences. fleet car had no radio, dog dish instead of full covers and no drip molding or vinyl door guards. that was it. which brings me to my theory, since I have thought about the 70.5 for years. I think it was pre regulation fleet purchase contracts. I think Ford assumed they could fill the orders until the contracts were satisfied, (second to last "one car, one color" Taurus comes to mind) and then the regulation became a reality. I think Ford, in an effort to quell disputes on delivering 1970 Mavericks in lieu of Falcons, gave the contracts an upgrade by simple rebadging. The contract called for 1970 Falcons, and they delivered. All specs would have been upgraded (and several downgraded with the Maverick choice) except fuel consumption which could still be lied about at this point. Everybody was happy except a haggard insurance salesman and a mouthy tricycle motor.
