A note about signal lights in the US - while I agree that having your signal lights blend in with your brake lights invites confusion/mistakes, the regulatory bodies aren't the only parties at fault for this. The regulations don't *require* signal and brake lights to be the same color, but they don't forbid it either. Plenty of vehicles here do have orange signal lights against red brake lights, my Toyota being one of them. It depends on the make and model. Some automakers just take it upon themselves to design and produce their cars like that for the American market, I imagine for some kind of perceived aesthetic purpose. No-one is forcing them to be made that way; it's just done because the designers think it looks good like that and there's nothing preventing them from building it.

Question is are the designs similar aka "inspired", or they all just use same tail light manufacturer that sends out stuff car maker need to figure out how to fit into their models ? 🤣

The Honda Beat was also mid engined like the AZ-1. It's the only one out of the 3 that was N/A and came with ITBs from the factory. It was the last car Soichiro Honda approved for production before his death in 1991.

I had to watch this because I own a 1961 continental convertible. It’s been in my family since 1971, and it got passed down to me in my 30s when my grandfather passed. I’ve been driving and working on it since I was 14, and I know it in and out. It is an absolute masterpiece. When I got it, the top didn’t work fully. It is such a complex system, it took me over a year tinkering with it to get it fully automatic again. When I say complicated, I mean it has over 20 relays, several hydraulic solenoids, many many switches, 2 electric motors (minus the back window motors), and 1 hydraulic pump plus the 2 hydraulic rams. All those components must work perfectly together, or the system doesn’t work. All this was at a time when computer control wasn’t a thing, so the system is prone to breaking…often. But seeing the system work is a thing of beauty. It’s fully automatic, and the system also includes provisions to roll down the back windows one inch when opening those doors, along with rolling them back up when the door is shut. The only thing that’s laughable on it is fomoco decided the massive 460ci motor needed a 2-barrel carburetor because it would at least get double digit fuel economy with a 2. Even with a 2bbl carb, it still made 300hp, but with the 3 gear auto, and the car weighing almost 6,000 pounds (the convertibles are heavier), it’s not fast at all. Funnier yet, the tank size is only around 20 US gallons, so it only has a range of about 200 miles total if you drive nicely. A strange thing they did because they had leftovers from the ‘59s is the fact the 1961s came with 14” wheels. 6,000lbs on that much bias ply rubber means it handles badly. Only one company still makes the correct tire size, so most 1961s have been converted to more reasonable 15” wheels allowing much cheaper tires to be had. And as for braking…It’s laughable. Trying to stop 6,000lbs of American unibody steel with 4 drums designed to fit in 14” wheels is just comical. It does have central locking, but I’ve never seen a working example. The locks are actuated by vacuum, and the rubber on those components being over 60 years old has turned to dust long ago. Speaking of vacuum controls: the climate control is nice and complicated as well. Diagrams in the manual rarely match up to actual vehicles, and the “dial-a-climate” controls -being also 63 year old rubber- leak badly if you can even get all the piping in order behind the dash. Another interesting factoid, it has a POWER 6-way adjustable bench seat in the front. And finally: the windshield wipers are hydraulic, and run off pressure developed by the power steering pump. If you have the wipers on and turn the wheel hard like when you’re parallel parking, the wipers will slow to a crawl until you’re done turning. -Regardless of its quirks and overly complex controls, it’s still a beaut, and it is fun to drive. It is definitely a piece of Americana from that era, and nothing’s come close to its unique style since. Great video, and appreciated visiting the history of the 1961 contie again.

Depends on your definition of car. I was quite impressed by Captain Scarlet's SPV whose driving position and use of electronics continues to be ahead of its time though Syd Mead et al continued the tradition. Cars do not define periods but are representative of a series of design and engineering challenges. My vote goes for the Toyota Corolla as it is the generic, almost apotheosis of the development of the international standard configuration of motor vehicular transportation, hitting an appropriate intersection of price and quality and ultimately untouched by human hands till driven onto the boat.

WELL, FROM WHERE I AM SITTING, as an old man with cig & hot coco, the DUESENBERG ERA LOST A VERY IMPORTANT PARALLEL. That would be the GOLDEN AGE OF HOLLYWOOD !!! In England you have the time honored tradition starting in 1909 of the hand built MORGAN sportscar for Gentlemen and a year wait. If you are stinkin' uber rich go for an AMG Maybach or Rolls. Even Bentleys are more mass produced these days, and you get common problems like headliner (inside interior ceiling) Separation. Socioeconomically, post WWII was the nouveau riche THAT WERE LESS THAN TRADITIONAL. Then you had the Democratic Rich (NOT POLITICAL PARTY) but a burgeoning middle & upper mild class spawned on by the GI Bill AND the 1960s stock market rise AND the Widespread use of IBM & other MAINFRAME COMPUTERS. They affected a big rise in productivity, horizontal integration of corporations (shoes & furniture & .... etc.) It also helped to speed up mergers & acquisitions & stock sales. 1960s BOOMERS wanted their own brand of REBELLIOUS CONSUMERISM. SOCIETY WAS SEGMENTING !! PEOPLE WANTED MORE BUT DIFFERENT. THE DUESENBERG WAS BECOMING LESS OF AN ICON & MORE OF AN ARTIFACT. The mid 1960s was the start of the Muscle Car Era. As other countrys' economies in the 60s were recovering from WWII, America was being flooded with imports (Honda Motorcycles, etc.). My pount for this new latter class of UMC, a mass produced Cadillac or Lincoln was sufficient to separate you from the riff raft. UNLESS YOU HAD MILLIONS IN ASSETS IT DID NOT MAKE SENSE TO HAVE A NEW, HAND BUILT, LUXERY AUTOMOBILE, ESPECIALLY FOR EVERYDAY USE.

Great video! I liked your Automation designs, I actually did a quick rough design for a new Edsel Crossover suv, I did it for a background billboard for a concept art painting, my design ideas were much different from your philosophy, the one I designed wasn't necessarily based on any existing Ford, but I suppose it'd be based on the Escape's architecture, again it's meant to satirize Canada and America's dumb obsession with cookie cutter SUVs, also my design was going for a hyper-clean and hyper-modern approach as i knew that Edsel always wanted their cars to be cutting edge and futuristic much like Studebaker! Again, great video, I've recently been picking up on u channel and I love the content, thank you :3 I'd like to show you my Edsel crossover design if u wanna see it

Chrome made the cars look beautiful and expensive. Today, cars have no style, and they look bloated. I can't tell one manufacturer from another any more. With all beauty and design gone, the prices are astronomical. Worse, there aren't many cars left. It's hard to see over the tall vehicles. People are not getting more space in the new vehicles. I can get much more into my long, deep trunk and inside my back seat than my friends can get in their vehicles. I had a 2-door 1976 Thunderbird when it was new. It was blue metallic with a white vinyl top and white leather interior and opera windows. It was the most beautiful car I ever had. Unfortunately, it came with a standard 460 engine, so its mileage was miserable. But what a pleasure it was to drive!

I believe the 57 Bel Air was the most iconic design of the mid 50's and still the absolute most popular even today, my Dad had several of them and probably the earliest car I remember riding in was a black 57 hard top . They should have ran that series at least until 1960 IMHO.

The current era is definitely back to the "chrome ornament"-style but without the chrome. Now it's just unnecessary flaps and wings and creases.
