This is one palm that I have to travel to see and appreciate. Too fast and too tender for even my greenhouse- out of the question for outdoor culture even with massive protection. I have tried small ones, with no luck. It is the epitome of a palm tree though - will grow it vicariously through the internet and vacation photos

Happy Thanksgiving. I’d say your 2 seasons away from getting coconuts in the Fiji. My Fiji has been a champ in our central Florida climate so far. Malayan dwarves on the other hand never do the best in cold temps.

Thank you so much to make me confusion-free to identify coconut plants varieties.😊 I tried a lot to know about recognising difference of tall and dwarf varieties, buy still unable to identify. 😢 Would you please explain in short!!?

@@maddoxgardening what are your lowest Temps on an average winter up there?
@billy3011Ай бұрын
@plantking1655 I'd say probably not average daytime highs drop off a lot in north Florida even in the 9b areas high temps can be 10 to 20 deg colder than where you are during the day. So very low soil temps.
@plantking1655Ай бұрын
@billy3011 i did see on palmtalk someone grew one in Jacksonville for a few years it got big but they protected it yearly, I'd say if you do try do it under canopy for frost protection and have a protection plan in place for it

I’m in flagler beach and attempting to grow a coconut. Also do u think i should wait to plant it until like march or something or plant it now, and what should i use to fertilize it?
@plantking1655Ай бұрын
@benpa1mer man your north or Daytona its gonna be a struggle if you get a rough winter. I've seen success in Daytona you've got coastal weather on your side up there inland it's unlikely for success, I'd plant more than 1 for better odds at success somtimes some handle cold a bit better especially tall types. An ealry start with a good establishment helps. And keeping it healthy because a healthy palm going into winter makes a huge difference in it's chance for survival. I'd plant it late February if no freezes are predicted or ealry march let it settle in for a month or 2 then start fertilizing it with perfect palm i order it online it's great I use it every 2 months in smaller doses. So let's say 2 cups for a small coconut palm I'd give 1 cup every 1.5 to 2 months rather than a large dose every 4 to 6 to keep fresh fertilizer around and nutrients in the soil especially since florida rain can wash those nutrients right out.
@benpa1merАй бұрын
@ Okay thank you, i bought 4 ounce frost cloth and im hoping it will survive. I will keep it inside until then and buy fertilizer
@plantking1655Ай бұрын
@benpa1mer well keep it outside so it stays acclimated to outdoor conditions don't wanna keep it inside too long then move it in spring for it to rot or fail to adjust i would keep it outside and only bring it inside if Temps are gonna go below 40

Don’t push zones with coconut. They can take brief low temperatures in the 30’s but only if the days warm up to 70. They hate days below 70.

@plantking16557 ай бұрын
Extensive, they don't do well In hurricanes and the root system can be massive, I had one for 4 years and digging it out is a pain. If you plant them I'd say 15 to 20ft away from the foundation of your house would be recommended
