Nearly every big company gives the employees numbers. H.R. lifeforms arrange job descriptions into little boxes. Each box is allocated a pay scale. The numbers are slotted into the boxes. This has the advantage that H.R. hardly ever has to think. If a number does exceptionally well, the number in its manager box is very limited in what it can do to reward the exceptional performer. So the exceptional performer leaves. In the end all the boxes are filled with mediocre performers who wonder why the company fails.
