Hello, I have the Neel 51 number 23 named AMA, and I'm going to buy the Starlink maritime for my transatlantic departure. Very clever mounting under the Bimini. Does it ever fall off when sailing? Could you send me photos of the cable passages, box installations, etc. to help me with my assembly? Thanks in advance and best regards Bruno

Nice repair on the dinghy - do you find it easier to work with carbon fiber or fiberglass? Do you have a preference or does it just depend on the application?
@StevenM.Cherry7 ай бұрын
I liked your thoughts on the sail repair approach and plans - how did it end up working vs. how you planned it out ahead of time? Also for future video ideas - now that you've been on the Neel 51 for a while, how do you like the overall build quality? I'm starting to look at them as a future boat, but have stumbled over a lot of bad comments about build quality, factory issues, etc. There aren't a ton of them out there, so any real world experienced feedback really helps. Also any thoughts about switching out the central A/C system with individual units like the ones from CT Marine?

For those wondering … .. 5200 is a 3M adhesive definitely not suitable for damaged sails. It is actually a funny joke for those use to boat repairs because 5200 is the “permanent” bond of fixes.
@sailingkelpie9 ай бұрын
It's not a joke. And i was surprised, too. The sails are carbon laminate, and I repaired them with 5200 after talking to a number of sailmakers and doing a lot of research. We are a good bit behind, but the repair has held together very well.

Hi Rob. I was watching your KZbin vid and interested in your mainsail setup. Forgive the technical questions. It looks like you have in boom furling? Did you need to change your mainsail or do you have the Neels standard one? You have a vang? And are you using the A frame system on the main sheet or have you change for traditional main sheet and traveller? One of my concerns is when i launch the dingy the the full weight of the sail and boom is supported by jackstays, which i find uncomfortable. Nice job on the sailing!

Ocean World Marina. Very cool. I remember coming into the marina with all that surf going on to the right. I was there in 2021. There was a bigtime surge going on where all the boats were just wrenching back and forth in the slips really stressing the dock lines. We actually broke a decent size dock line there.

We ended up having to replace a number of docklines that we used while there. We were in one of the calmer spots. What part of the marina were you docked at?

I know you r on a cat, so almost horizontal all the time, but I would still put a webbing strap under the dish, between the pipes; you never know what wave can hit you. It looks pretty precarious to me.

We are a trimaran, so we heel, but the dish never budged the whole season. And we went through some decent seas with it in the atlantic.

Interesting, I never considered getting a lawyer involved in the buying process. Thanks for your insights
@sailingkelpie10 ай бұрын
There were no brokers involved, so the lawyer handled the paperwork. In this case, it was a very complex paperwork sale since the boats title was held by a french bank.

Does it actively cool the water like an AC unit? Or fan cool the water through a radiator on the unit? Or just circulate the water and that's enough? I own a bed jet. Amazingly, just blowing air under the covers is pretty effective at cooling. It doesn't actively cool the air like an AC unit. It's best for heating and it's my best friend in the winter.
@sailingkelpie10 ай бұрын
It cools the water down to 6X degrees its essentially a small ac unit. If also can heat the water if its too cold out
@carsonc127210 ай бұрын
@sailingkelpie Nice... I have a Bed Jet. It heats amazingly well. Cooling works better than I thought it would but it is just circulating room temperature air.

Please tell me? Do you have any concerns to find a place to do a haul out? My biggest concern i do not like sail drives. Too much maintenance. We don't have yards here at Panama City Florida that could take a Neel 51 out of the water. I need a shaft drive they can go for years if painted properly without being hauled out. I don't wanna haul out every year just to maintain the sail drive.
@sailingkelpie10 ай бұрын
we have hauled out three times without issue in US (NH), BVI, and Grenada. Its always stressful hauling out though :-/

around cost is ok great service (if you are in Greece for 10 euros you could have unlimited data for a month with a sim card) but 2400$/month offshore is a bullshit let's be honest. Affordable internet for everybody (Elons word) it's just a rip-off. how could be affordable in Africa or south America this shit
@mgordon1713 Жыл бұрын
To be fair, when he said affordable internet for all he meant for poor people in rural areas, not for luxury cruisers crossing the Atlantic. You can still get the Roam/Mobility subscription and use that close to shore and in marinas. Then when you are sailing on the ocean you can buy priority mobile data that allows you to use the starlink on the ocean. The standard Roam/Mobility disc can be used when moving less than 10mph, however with too much rocking on the waves it might give a spotty connection (That's what the expensive flat disc is for).
@sailingkelpie10 ай бұрын
we have the RV version so about the same price as our Xfinity at home. The rv version only does not work >15 miles an hour and 5+ miles off shore. then you can turn on the premium data for 50c a Gb

Are you on standard mobile data or priority? I'm on the fence between the Maritime package with the flat dish or the Roam package with the motorized dish. Maritime gives you 50GB priority data up to 50GB. After that you have to buy data by the GB. On "land" you get dropped down to unlimited standard mobile data. The Roam package with the motorized dish is not supposed to work while in-motion, although their website says it does. I've heard it works up to about 8kts before SL realizes you are in-motion and cuts you off. The question you can't get a straight answer to, which you have tested here, is where does "land" end and "ocean" begin? How far off shore will a $600 dish and Roam data plan go? Interesting mount on the dish. Never thought of just mounting it under the bimini.
@sailingkelpie10 ай бұрын
standard mobile data. yes 8-10knotts is the limit when on the move if we want internet we turn on the opt in premium data. it is a number of miles my guess is 5 when the data shuts off. in the Caribbean it has not been an issue since most of the islands are close.
