Could a full size glider carry an external thermometer in order to indicate when one has found the warmer air of a thermal? In addition of course to the altitude meter beeping accordingly?

@ A lifting sensation is understandable. How about the Temperature of outside air?
@kimp807918 күн бұрын
@@josephinebennington7247 To my understanding they were tried on hang gliders back in the day. Temperature sensors on each wing tip, called "snoopers" i think. Did not catch on. The lift sensation and tilt of aircraft was dominant.
@josephinebennington724718 күн бұрын
@ Interesting! I can now imagine, back in the even earlier days, of open Slingsbys the temperature changes could be felt on the pilot’s face.
@kimp807918 күн бұрын
@@josephinebennington7247 Yes. And smell from where the thermal originates on ground. Good or bad😝. But to center in lift: Variometer no1. I believe that old school sailplanes use sometimes only visual variometer. But for hang- and para- gliders sound, as in the video. Feel also plays in as no 2. because sometimes you can feel the lift, or maybe see it in a model, before the variometer start chirping.

I've been lurking around your videos, sir, and learning each time. Especially your tutorial on recognizing thermals based on wind direction. Question if you'd indulge me for a moment. You seem to have experience with a few (or more) 3.5-4m composite planes and I'm particularly impressed with the Prestige Pro. I also watched your vid of a competition with numerous variety of planes represented. I'm wanting to move up from 2m RES and wondered if you would share your thoughts on what you've observed. I can't afford a "fleet" so need to be efficient with what i spend. Hoping for great looks, design, light but strong, enjoyable for sport, but capable of competition. I've heard much about Xplorer (Explorer?), NAN models, etc... and as i said that 2Pk Pro looks and behaves amazing. However, they don't appear to be available right now. I fly power also, so full-house is not new to me. Care to steer me a little? Mostly I'd like something something I'll enjoy for a while. Thanks again! Jerry G (USA)
