I think there are a lot of symbolism here as well. I think that they were both scared and neither one prepared because that's how "true love" is sometimes. It sneaks up on you when you least expect it to. As long as your heart is wide open and you are seeking it, then it'll probably show up when you least expect it. I think that the picture of the eyes being closed in the beginning may also signify that their "hearts were closed" in believing that they may possibly "NEVER" find this true love. I bet they weren't thinking that it could possibly happen outside of their own races. "LOVE" is blind when it comes to color, just like the eyes being closed in the beginning. True love will let you see beyond the color of a person's skin. You have to see it with your heart and not with your eyes. Also, he's caught up in this Nazis lifestyle that he wants to be freed from and is being tormented inside and is unsure as to what would happen to him if he tried to leave or admit that he has an attraction to darker skinned women. They both seemed like they wanted to communicate with each other, but were too afraid to and the fact that they were both born of two different races made them shy away even more from getting to know each other better because they knew how society felt about mixing races. The look of her beauty probably reminded him of a time when his life was once beautiful too. He keeps checking her out, but his fear of being rejected or the fear of what will happen to him if he fell in love with this beautiful black woman caused him not to act on his feelings. There is a war going on inside of him. Should I say something, or should I just stay quiet?? You can tell he is wrestling with these thoughts. They're not the same color, but that does not stop this yearning feeling he has inside to get to know her better. She seems to like him too but, wouldn't dare say so, for she is much too shy. I think that the sweet smell of her perfume symbolizes the sweet autumn days that they could be spending together walking hand in hand reminiscing in a park somewhere. The camera switching to the older couple is definitely a reminder to us all that we only have but so much life here on this earth. Sometimes you have to seize the moment, or it will pass you by and you may never get that chance again! Life can pass you by so fast! Neither is prepared or they're both too scared to take that chance and become like that old couple who is so comfortable and is still so much in love after all these years, so much so that it almost seems natural for them to fall fast asleep in each other's embrace. I know he's probably thinking that could be us! But they're both too scared or unprepared to find out. When it's time for her to leave, she takes one more look back in the hopes that maybe, just maybe he'll come running after her and maybe just maybe we too can grow old together, but it doesn't happen, and they both continue on their way I'm sure each of them was still wondering....Could he or could she have been the one?? Well, they may never know because neither was willing to take that risk and overcome their fears and insecurities to find out.
