Whenever I see old clips like this of Donald O'Connor I immediately think of Sean Hayes.

Ethel Merman though. Why have one volume when you can have five. Bless her, always a BIG joy to watch.

O connor was a true triple threat Far superior to Kelly Kelly when he dances is too stiff upper body wise due to ballet training O connor is like astaire more relaxed and loose

Came here from the Kukla, Fran, and Ollie episode with Robert Q Lewis. As much as I love Ethel Merman, she doesn't hold a candle to Buelah 😂

Debbie Reynolds' training was in gymnastics. She learned how to dance for "Singin' in the Rain." Gene Kelly was actually kind of bugged with her because he had to spend so much time teaching her the steps. He later admitted that he felt bad for being so mean to her during the filming of "Singin' in the Rain." She ended up being an amazingly fast learner.

That's our lovely Debbie Reynolds in a sequence from 'I Love Melvin' with Donald O'Connor. I'ts hard to believe that Debbie wasn't a professional dancer because all her foot-work in film musicals seem seamless. She was also such a lovely wholesome beauty of the great American kind with her auburn hair and green eyes. Yes, to this very day, Debbie remains a perennial family fave.

Donald O'Connor was every inch as good a singer/dancer/actor as Gene Kelly or Fred Astaire but for some reason, Hollywood movie companies liked to bill him less than them. It wasn't fair but it was the system in Hollywood at the time that some would be promoted over others who were equally as good.

I recorded a 5-part acapella version of this song. 🙂 To this day, it remains one of my favorite recordings. I hope someone finds comfort and warmth in it once I'm long gone. Thanks, Irving... you were talented beyond belief, and so were O'Connor and The Mermz, lol.

Keep in mind: Debbie Reynolds' first big role was in "Singing In The Rain", only 1 (maybe 2) years before this movie - and she had *NO* dance experience. So what she did here was amazing.

I remember first watching this on tv one afternoon while convalescing from a serious op. I was in my teens and feeling low. This movie cheered me up no end. Thanks Donald O'Connor and Debbie Reynolds wherever you are.

I hear singing and there's no one there I smell blossoms and the trees are bare All day long I seem to walk on air I wonder why. I wonder why I keep tossing in my sleep at night And what's more I've lost my appetite Stars that used to twinkle in the skies Are twinkling in my eyes. I wonder why You don't need analyzing It is not so surprising That you feel very strange but nice Your heart goes pitter patter I know just what's the matter Because I've been there once or twice Put your head on my shoulder You need someone who's older A rubdown with a velvet glove There is nothing you can take To relieve that pleasant ache You're not sick. You're just in love
