Near and Mello are L split in half, Near is his deductive reasoning and logical skills, Mello is his Intuition and Tenacity. Individually Near and Mello could never surpass L, they were halves of him after all.

The only reason near won or that he exists is first of all luck and the fact the writer was forced to write after the death of L basically light actually won and lets say ok the plot ended the way it ended light still doesn’t lose yes he dies but all of those who died and people who are still alive will always remember what happend also mikami is the reason light died one would say light was stupid because he trusted mikami with everything but i say its stupid that you say that because mikami literally used to worship kira and followed everything he said so it’s unlikely that he could have ever done anything other than what kira ordered so light was right and the writer just wanted to end the series

Reason why Near wins- Because there wasn't Soichiro Yagami to convince Near that Light isn't Kira, if Soichiro didn't oppose L the series would have ended in 13 episodes or something

I like how on that shot N looks a LOT like L. They share the same expression, L knew that someday N would be a better successor to his legacy than Mello, though they were both good.
