As a Broncos supporter, I'm glad the Steelers didn't make the GF in 92'. What an awesome team they had that year, and a great coach. RIP Graham🏉

Crazy to think that at this time Wollongong had not only a top-flight team in rugby league but also two different teams in the national soccer league for the 1990 season. Such a fall from grace, even though the region has grown hugely since then, hopefully we see more full-time football of all codes on the South Coast in future again.

I believe Illawarra should not have merged with anyone. They have a great stadium, huge fan base at Wollongong, and can always put good robust players on the paddock.

Brett Rodwell without doubt one of the best back up men in the comp during his time. Very fit. He scored a lot of tries being the man on hand to receive the final pass.

Awesome dude. Nothing like a derby at Wollongong on a Sunday Arvo. Disappointing result, but exciting occasion still

Indeed. 1990 was a real step up. Performances, results and crowds improved dramatically. A bridging year, before finishing in the top half of the competition in the following four seasons before Super League hit.

No disrespect intended. 10 mins to go, ahead 22-8 and you lose. Steelers were real good back then too, almost unbeatable in Wollongong.

That was a theme in the 90s. Alfie openly complained about it in his book. That the broncos players would start slow then only when they thought the other team was far enough ahead they’d switch on. He believed that attitude cost them a couple premierships because doing that against mid 90s manly and newcastle and cronulla and norths and Canberra leads to losses in big game. Even Brad Thorn said that Alfie was his and his team mates excuse to go through the motions and then when there’s 10 to go look at him and go “well come on save us” and he’d do it time and again until they ran into a Stuart to John’s who was good enough to strangle Brisbane.
