Used to holiday there with my folks in the 1950’s at Coombe Haven Caravan Park & have very fond memories of the place. The Olympic sized outdoor swimming pool was amazing, and when it rained (as it often did!) we’d go to the White Rock indoor pool that was ingeniously built into the promenade sea wall! ❤

If they had KEPT Dover WD operational and simply modernised the trains and tracks, I am certain it would be thriving as a service now. I don't know the full story, but I suspect a shady deal was done, behind the scenes between Eurotunnel / Eurostar and the British government. If you want the tunnel built, (private capital), you will eliminate the competition for foot passengers, ie Victoria to Dover WD. It was an excellent and POPULAR service. If it was allowed to exist the tunnel wouldn't be viable financially.

lovely film, it breaks my heart when ever I see the cricket field in town which has been replaced by horrendous shopping center. Hopefully one day the shopping center will be torn down and the cricket field, or at least a green space for the people of the town to enjoy, will return again.

Sad thought is that virtually everyone in the film will be dead now, except those who were little kids at the time. Has anyone watched this film and seen their parents or grandparents in it?

I arrived at Dover Western Docks station in 1980 to catch a hovercraft to Boulogne, I remember it well because it was like stepping back in time to the 1920's/1930's. Wonderful old station.

It's so nice to see the pier in its heyday, lovely to see it with all the lights illuminated, nowadays it's a shadow of its former self, I heard that the owner who purchased it after the fire destroyed it has now sold it , he also owns Eastbourne pier too, and yesterday I was on Brighton pier and realised that Hastings pier has no arcades or shops and unfortunately will die a death . There just isn't and won't be the public footfall to keep it financially viable. Its a shame . -bud the painter-

This film is early 1960s when Costa Del Hastings started going into decline with far worse to come in the c1970s and c1980s. The best years for Hastings were probably late 1940s and 1950s.

The late 1950s was the last time Hastings was civilised. Look at Warrior Square in this film and how superb it once was and compare with today.

A little bit confusing. This film is my childhood. I remember it all. Someone mentioned 1963. Sounds about right but there are still Trolley Bus overhead cables. They didn't stop until 1959. But 63 fits with my memory. One of the cars looks 63 but not the overhead cables. I am going with 59.

Kodachrome II 8mm film is 1961 to 1974, so it can't be the 50s. The last trolleybus ran in 1959 and the trolley bus wires were removed the following year, so it can't be the 50s even if you allow that it is not Kodachrome film. I would date it to 1963.

The trolley wires would indicate it wasn't the 1960's at all. They went in mid 1959.

Although the tracks leading into the old station have long since been lifted and subsequently filled in, the actual station building is still there - it's been converted into a Cruise Liner terminal. So not everything was bulldozed.....they managed to find a new use for the main building and repurpose it. That's got to be a good thing! 😀

The big white building briefly seen from the train is / was the offices of Network Rail or whatever it's called now. ORIGINALLY it was built and opened as the Lord Warden Hotel, right on the Quay for the "packet" boats, as they used to be called. It was very elegant and expensive aimed at the top tier travellers. Kings, diplomats, businessmen, writers etc were the clientele. Charles Dickens was a regular. It is mentioned in the M R James ghost story "Casting the Runes".

Was this train hauled by a 47. I used an EMU from Waterloo in 1993 to go to Belgium. I think they should have kept this station open
