Well done, brother. I’ve so appreciated these daily readings this year - they’ve been an encouragement and challenge to me, and I’ve definitely learned some new things from you while reading through even the most familiar of the NT books. Thanks for all the time, intentional preparation, and thoughtfulness you put into these videos, Joel. I’m looking forward to joining in with whatever you have planned for next year - I’m confident it’ll be a blessing to many, as this reading plan was to me. May God richly bless YOU in your continued reading of His Word! Love you!

Glad these were encouraging and challenging for you! I felt similarly-I’ve always known God’s Word to be living and active, and this experience solidified that for me. Old Testament comes next for the next three years! bit.ly/2021OTPlan

In John 1:42, Simon is called the son of John. When I checked the reference, that went to Matthew 16:18 (?), it said son of Jonah. We’re these two names interchangeable at the time? And do we actually know who Simon Peters father was?
@joelmoody82764 жыл бұрын
Good catch, Rita! Both John and Jonah (like in English) are very similar in the Greek. It could be that Matthew and John were referring to the same person with different nicknames, or that there was something lost in moving their native Aramaic to the Greek. We don't know anything else about Simon Peter's father, I'm afraid.

These scriptures brought to mind the Anthem the choir sang on Sunday. It was a Craig Courtney song called, I am not my own. Here’s a youth choir singing it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jIiraouifdiBj6c

Hi. What does your bible say in Genesis 32:28?
@joelmoody82764 жыл бұрын
The NIV gives: “Then the man said, ‘Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with men and have overcome.’"

I question why Jesus would send teachers and wise men to the Pharisees knowing they were going to kill them? Was the shedding of righteous blood and act by God here and not man?
@joelmoody82764 жыл бұрын
I think that Jesus desperately wants to give human beings every opportunity to change--or, absent that, to reveal their true character. By sending these messengers of the gospel, no charge of, "We didn't know!" can be leveled at God. Additionally, it serves to demonstrate to the rest of the community that their religious leaders aren't focused on God's will, but instead on their own power. That's how it makes sense to me, anyway. Hope this helps!

I remember watching this 3-night mini-series in 1977, because it was directed by Franco Zefirelli, a favorite of mine. Not only is Jesus white with a British accent, he also doesn't blink his eyes for three nights straight! Drove me nuts!! :)

I think I read that the actor landed the role of Jesus in part because of his piercing blue eyes--maybe he wanted to lean on that as much as he could!

Joel, Having experienced a wonderful trip called “The Footsteps of Paul” a number of years ago I find the geography of these passages fascinating as well as Paul’s defense in dealing with the Jews. Also, having traveled by boat often at times in rough water, I understand their plight. For these reasons I have been compelled to read ahead nearly every day. But, I re-read on the specified day and always listen to your commentary. Thank you sooo much. Bob Fulmer

Joel, I’ve studies this event many times in my life and today was the first time this sentence struck me: “And then Satan entered Judas Escariot, one of the twelve. I think I always thought of him as being the weak link, but had not considered the devil had taken him over! Reading one chapter a day has been meaningful. Thanks for your diligence in preparation.

CORRECTION: I claimed the man on the side of the road was of Samaritan descent in this video. I'm not sure why I said that, since it's not true! The point stands, however---the Levite and the priest failed to allow for their shared humanity with the injured man to compel them to assist him. A huge thank you to SF for bringing this to my attention.

I had to go back and refresh with the Exodus story to determine if the veil was physical or metaphorical! I won’t say so others can look it up for themselves!
@joelmoody82764 жыл бұрын
That whole narrative of Exodus 32 through 34 is one of my favorite parts of the Bible. It's a microcosm of the Five G's of the Bible, which make up the themes of every story: God, Guilt, Grace, Gratitude, Glory.

I definitely feel pastors should be compensated for their work! I feel lots of church offerings will suffer because of Covid-19 and we as a church need to make sure this doesn’t affect our pastors!
@joelmoody82764 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, I think you might be right about church offerings falling, Rita. Here's hoping that people are able to navigate a different pattern and style of giving, since these are unprecedented times we're living in.

You took this down a different path, then what I expected. I thought you would focus on “ who among men knows the thoughts of a man, except the spirit within him?”

It is freeing to know that Jesus didn’t feel compelled to answer “set up” questions. It’s OK to not to let yourself be drawn in to a situation you feel is a trap.
@joelmoody82765 жыл бұрын
It really is freeing! When we get to Mark 12 next week, we’ll get to see another instance of this, but with Jesus counter-punching the “set up” questions.

Joel, thank you for explaining the bit about the woman with the daughter. I was not understanding what she was talking about with the dogs getting crumbs. Now I understand completely. It makes total sense to me now.

Good question Joel. Why did Jesus tell the family to "say nothing"? It seems to me that the effect would be the same weather the family told the facts or said nothing. There is going to be lots of talk and speculation from the crowd. One of two things happened, either of which will cause quite a stir. 1) Jesus was correct when he told the crowd that she was sleeping. He went into the house and told her to get up & she did. How did he know that she was only sleeping when the messengers from the house said she was dead? 2) She was in fact dead and Jesus brought her back to life. The family telling what happened does not change the way the crowd is going to respond.
@joelmoody82765 жыл бұрын
Jesus does this several times, particularly in the Gospel of Mark-he offers evidence of his divinity, then tells folks not to share it with anyone. I can't remember if I mentioned it in this video, but scholars call this the "Messianic Secret." But why? Why would he do this? My guess is that to take credit for raising the girl from the dead would be tantamount to claiming to be Messiah. And if Jesus is the Messiah, then his followers might try to lead an insurrection against Rome, believing that the Messiah would be their conquering King. Maybe Jesus was deeply moved and wanted to heal the girl without the consequences on people trying to anoint him then and there. Sure, rumor may spread, people will talk-but Jesus will continue to define who Messiah is on his terms instead of on others' terms. Hope this helps. Thanks for thinking through this!

Blasphemy defined as "using God to further one's own aims". Wow, I was raised with the understanding that blasphemy was "taking the Lords name in vein" or "profanity". Given that some of the greatest atrocities in history were done in the name of God by leaders using God to further their own aims this new definition fits with blasphemy being the one unforgivable sin. Thanks Joel
