i'm playing movement 2 in my band class rn because my director is doing a college presentation thing on the whole symphony. and apparently he went through the comment section of a facebook post from 2014 to find julie's reply to it for some symphony lore (insane behavior but i respect the grind). apparently the fifth movement isn't actually about the drawing it's officially about, but instead a photo of a young girl who survived one of the atomic bombs dropped on japan and had her whole arm burnt. i can totally see either interpretation work for it, but the snowy morning interpretation doesn't account for how much grief you can hear in it.
