Thanks Jonathan. The beauty of your video, compared to some others, is that you use the product and understand what it can do. And you explain it very well. I have written a few books using Scrivener and Word. And I have umpteen other programs that do this and do this. I am still testing the waters but believe Obsidian could be my new writing and discovery tool. Go to the top of the class!

Thanks for sharing. I love obsidian but I find it enoying that files and images become duplicates on my computer. Every time a file is added to the vault it is a copy of a file. From what I understand that would mean that my stoage space will double as fast be full. For Images I use the Imgur plugin mostly. The risk is that if something happens to the website it can all be gone.

You're right; when it goes into your vault it gets copied in. Then I go through my downloads folder and delete stuff I know is now living in my vault.

Great video and subject. I have been handling attachments this way for a while and for the same reasons you mention. Primarily because I know many of my attachments will be re-used in other notes. So, I want them in a generic location rather than buried down inside of another subject or folder that may or may not be related to the current subject/note I am working on. I appreciate you bringing visibility to this, becsaue I felt like I was kind of rowing upstream or working backwards doing it this way. Thought I was missing something somewhere that would have made the system for handling attachments simpler.

Interesting and useful content, thank you. In my early Obsidian days I created a resources folded for attachments and 'dumped' stuff in there. Is there a reasonable way to now clear out the dross, i.e., unreferenced and orphaned attachments? I do like tidy! 🙄

@user-hu9eg7ck9b3 күн бұрын
In my case, I often have screenshots etc in the attachments folder, but for important files that live on my file system (outside the vault) I often refer to them in a note and keep them outside the vault. Drag a file into Obsidian while pressing Option (on Mac) to create a link without adding it to the attachment folder. [A file](file:///path/to/A%20file.pdf) You can even drag in multiple files at a time. You can also use angle brackets to avoid escaping spaces: [Another file](<file:///path/to/Another file.pdf>) Relative paths (e.g., ~/path/to/file) don't work (as of 2024-05-27), and you'll need to start from the root directory. That's a disadvantage because it means that external paths don't work if you sync between devices, even if you keep the same folder structure. Don't forget the `file:///` to start with. You can get the path using the terminal, or with pressing Option when right clicking the file in Finder.

I've been doing this since I switched to Obsidian. I'm in the put a note in the most suitable folder then create it camp and store attachments in a subfolder of the note folder. I think a plugin I recently started using is useful to either way of doing things and adds another way of finding attachments. Paste Image Rename. It offers ways to rename a file when it is attached to a note. I have it set to handle all files, use note name, and auto add -(number) suffix. I have always renamed attachments so I didn't have thousands of "pasted imageXXXXXXX" files. I used another plugin for a while and didn't like it. For a long time I renamed while adding but that gets tricky with keeping the name consistent when there are more than a few. Then I tried attaching them all, going into source mode and renaming so I could see the links and copy/paste, type suffix. This plugin saves a lot of time and helps related things. There is a rename notice that can be disabled. I leave it enabled for those times when I have a file name I want to keep. A couple examples would be an image file that may be used in many notes, or a file that is accessed often outside Obsidian.

That is a bizarrely specific plug-in, and it sounds perfect. Thanks for the heads up!

Some Questions/Comments - You use the attachment method, which brings the file into the vault, possibly creating a duplicate if for some reason you keep file elsewhere on your hard drive and want to keep it there. That's great if you're collecting files, say, for a project and need them all "under one roof". - Sometimes that is what I need, but sometimes I don't. For instance, I have a bunch of .PDFs that I need to organize and this looks amazing. However... - I obsessively create back-ups, and also want to keep my vault somewhat portable, which means that bloat is an issue. - All of which leads to the question: is there a way to embed files without placing them within the vault? I'm looking for answers on my own, and I understand it's not what you were tackling in your video. (Here's a discussion from 4 years(!) ago: forum.obsidian.md/t/link-to-external-files/8107/8). But I wondered if you had any thoughts on this. - The bigger reason I'm taking up too much space asking about something you did not address in your video is this: if there were a way to use Obsidian in this fashion, i.e., without importing everything into your vault, what you propose could constitute a File Manager replacement. Whoa. Imagine the power!
@zavant4 күн бұрын
You won't be able to view it, but you can use the filepath as the link like ![](user/jonathan/documents/gamerules.pdf). That would still let you keep all the metadata in the note. BUT, if you like it being mobile, that pathway won't be legit on other devices. Sooooo, you create one way to use Obsidian outside what it intends, but then you create another issue somewhere else. Fun!

Great video. I would like to know if there is a way to do the following: put properties in the file itself that is taken to Obsidian, as it does not seem to work, for this I would have to open a note and embed the file.
@zavant4 күн бұрын
Obsidian is a lightweight wrapper around markdown files, essentially. It's not going to edit the attachments; only show them in the note. To change the file itself (by adding properties to it), it's now trying to be an operating system; which it isn't. Does that make sense?
@floriang4 күн бұрын
It's definitely interesting. There are apps to store different kinds of attachments, for example epubs, which allow you to use tags, etc, but the freedom of free form notes ... definitely to be considered.

No clue, to be honest. I think of Numerals as a little pocket universe where the magic can happen. But, as soon as you're trying to take the output of that universe and then insert it dynamically into another universe; you're going to have a bad time. It might be technically possible? But that's outside my realm of "I love this simple text editor that loves markdown" world. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Linter is quite cool. It tries to "correct" multiple issues automatically. And you don’t really need to use a shortcut even; just enable "Lint on file change", and it will automatically lint a file as soon as you move over to the next one.
@zavant17 күн бұрын
I enabled the "file change" way of doing it, but no matter how many other files I visit & no matter how long I wait for it to happen; it is never linted when I come back. It only works for me if/when I use the hotkeys. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@brendanau689313 күн бұрын
@@zavant did Lint on File Change fix it?
@zavant13 күн бұрын
@@brendanau6893 I figured out how to make it work: it triggers when I close the file. Since I rarely close things (just leave a bazillion tabs open), and I want to be in control of when it happens, I'm only doing it with the proactive hotkeys. That way I can avoid an "oops" if I didn't want this file to avoid getting linted.

I use the syntax ^[Footnote text.]. It's easy, and doesn't interrupt my workflow. If I have a book title coming up several times, I put [[author, booktitle, year]] in double square brackets. So, my footnote will be: ^[[[author, booktitle, year]], page number.] This way, I don't have to retype author and booktitle every time. Obsidian will propose the author if I start typing.

I was using that for a while until I tried transcluding some sections of notes which had those footnotes, but they didn't carry over. Now I just do a `^[The text I want]` manually instead of putting it at the bottom. It's ugly, and you can't reuse footnotes, but they move along with you.

Great video as always, Jonathan! The Markdown syntax for footnotes is as cumbersome as tables can be. Hoping the functionality of these two plugins will eventually be brought into the core application. Then in answer to two points you raised: "lint" in programming is the highlighting of issues and fixing these -- it's named after how washing machines etc have ways of catching lint (fluff and extras from clothing). And Command button in Windows is Control Vs Mac's Option key being Alt in Windows.
