Nah completely agree with this ranking barneys only real flaw is he’s a womaniser Barney literally goes the furtherest for all his friends even more so than marshal and he’s none of the others best friend marshal and Ted lily and robin barney is kind of the 5th wheel but the hardest working of those wheels

I think my favorite thing about Lily's portrayal in the show is that there are no real consequences for her actions she learns several times that she sucks at art and literally no other man wants her but Marshall And yet she consistently even after being with this man for 10 years doesn't marry him or sabotages marriage plans several times It's kind of crazy

Lily is not worse than Ted. Ted is legit a psycho. There’s an episode where he breaks up a couple about to get married just because he wants to bring Robin to the wedding. And at said wedding he literally gets over her in 5 minutes and starts obsessing with a new girl. Then he cheats on that girl with Robin. He dumped a girl twice on her birthday. He makes a complete ass of himself chasing random women around and love bombing them way too hard. Ted should honestly be on a true crime show about stalkers.

12:03 Ted didn't make Robin give away her dogs. The writers on the show found them inconvenient for developing her character and they used Ted to deliver the bad news.

Robin' s treatment of Patricie moves her suck scale. Patricie is sweet, kind and a decent employee. Robin abuses her. Isn't funny the hot boss abuses the mid employee. No. If Robin was toughing her up to prepare her for a tough industry. Fine. But the Barney story line. Showed Robin sucks as a boss

You can’t have it both ways. A character but not a person except when he is a person? A plot device but one of the group? They are all plot devices and characters. Some are more entertaining and realistic than others. Marshall is likely the most realistic and positive. Barney is a cartoon and often a villain.

Ted is a unreliable narrator, he makes Barney, Lilly and Robin worse to make him seem better but the reason Marshal looks so good is because Marshal is his best friend

My least favorite characters were Ted and Robin. More Ted than Robin. Robin was annoying to me because of her constant struggle with choosing her career over relationships. She, like Ted, had moments where she was incredibly picky with her lovers when she shouldn't have been, and countlessly put herself through heartache over and over again for the same reasons. She also seemed to have no self control and would use Ted and also Barney for sex and comfort. But, Ted is more annoying to be because he basically steam rolled through a bunch of women in the cheapest ways possible, also never learning anything. His flip flopping with Robin and then later Victoria was incredibly frustrating. Also IMO Victoria was right to ask Ted to stop being friends with Robin. I guess that's why he didn't choose Victoria lol. It also makes his relationship with Tracey seem so unimportant. Like, Tracey was cool with Robin, so that's why she was the wife, but after her death Ted just couldn't help but go back to the same thing that never worked for him before.

I respect the theory not that Ted lied about Barney but that some or even a lot of Barney's sexual antics were Ted's antics but he didn't want his kids to know he was such a womanize so he said it was Barney who did it all.

I personally think Ted deserves the worst ranking. Ted spends most of the show saying how great of a guy he is, and continually tells Barney he's terrible to women. But then Ted does the exact same things as Barney - going along with his lies, targeting vulnerable women, sleeping with them under false pretences. At least Barney is open about who he is. Ted actively hides it. Ted sucks the most.

I agree that ted gets nearly no character development, but he doesn’t necessarily sucks- most of the things you brought up about him were clearly there for the comedy rather than actions that are characteristic of him, and if Barney gets away with every horrible thing he did because he is a character in a sitcom that uses him for comedy, so should ted. On the other hand, robin shows this same selfish behaviour again and again in what is clearly a repeating part of her character and she and ted should switch places.

I just feel like it's a cop-out to not scrutinize barney's super sexist behavior on the basis that he's "not real". None of these characters are real. They're all caricatures how people act in relationships. Hell, Marshall might be even more of a caricature than Barney sometimes. The biggest issue I have with Barney is how terrible an example he set for men in the 2000's. I was in college at the time and saw his ideology towards women parroted in real life and online countless times. Which is ironic because you give him a pass because he's unrealistic and he ended up influencing men in reality. None of the OTHER characters in the show had that influence on real life but sure, ignore all that. He's a great guy 👍

THANK YOU for realizing that Lily is the worst. It's all the more infuriating because she never EVER gets called out on her shit, except in the episode where Ted calls her a Grinch. And even there Ted has to apologize to her at the end. But engineering all of Ted's breakups for something like a decade was some straight up supervillain shit. Plus there's the whole calling off the engagement thing, the running up the massive credit card debt due to her shipping addiction thing, the falling ass backwards into a high paying art job despite crapping out in San Francisco thing, and the making Marshall turn down his judgeship so she can take a job in Italy thing. She does ALL of this heinous shit, but somehow the show never recognizes how horrible she's being, probably because she was based on one of the creator's wives. UGH she drives me nuts when I rewatch the show now.

Barney and Marshall are my favorite characters. Marshall is a perfect man and partner but is a little silly and Barney is a terrible person but he is just so goddamn funny. The other three are terrible people but the series always downplays how bad they are

Lily is horrible for many reasons. She is a thief while being with a lawyer who wants to become a judge. She fantasizes about many other people while she is married and would act out on it given the perfect circumstances. She manipulates everyone and when called out plays victim and storms off or changes the subject and brings it back on them, has racked up massive credit card debt and has not told her husband this who she expetcs will oay it off, the same husband who just recently finished law school and has student debt, tells everyones secrets even to strangers, would equate marshall being offered a judgeship which could possibly change new york for the better and lead to a more stable family life to a trip to Italy for a year to be a eccentric billionaire's art assistant, a billionaire who has proven he would fire her in a heartbeat... For anyone to defend lilly is kinda wild. Objectively Barney is the worst not even close but lilly is riilght behind him

Ranking Lily the worst and Marshall the best is such a mans perspective. Marshall never respected Lily as a person or as his partner. He constantly allowed other people(his entire family at Thanksgiving, is dad, their entire friend group, strangers) to be a part of serious conversations in their relationship. As well as put everyone else above Lily(how many times did he disappear because Ted "needed" him. He continuously pushed Lily for things she wasn't ready for like marriage and kids etc as well as continuously invalidated her dreams. She put him through 3 years of law school after which he did not become an environmental lawyer and "save the planet" but actually job hopped constantly and fell into bouts of unemployment during which Lily still supported him and encouraged him to follow his dreams. Something he never encouraged her to do. let's not act like he couldn't have been supportive of san Francisco. They had done long distance before and could surely do it for a summer after 9 years together. He told her she wasn't a real artist, was mad when she worked too much after finally getting an art consultant job and randomly decided being a judge was his dream and nearly crushed hers that she was finally getting some 15 years down the line. I personally was just horrified every time Lily had the fight or flight urge to disappear on her husband and eventually child🤷
