The original church modes from greek modes were Egyptian. Min 2nd is quite dark as well.
@darkindustry17 сағат бұрын
That's true, many don't know that modal music is millennia older than tonal music. The only difference, as far as I remember, is that Greeks perceived their scales as 2 stacked tetrachords as opposed to modern theory where we see it as a single 8-note entity. Speaking of minor 2nd, that's another good point you made there. I actually covered that topic in my video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qqmqgKqth9CLatk

No sharps or flats between b & c and e & f , a b c d e f g , 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 & octave 8th. Fing your interval.
@darkindustry17 сағат бұрын
You're absolutely right that b-f is the natural tritone in the A-minor scale, as part of the diminished triad built on the second degree (b-d-f). However, what I've observed in metal practice and beyond (in Romanticism) is that tritones often achieve their most striking effect when interacting directly with the root. In your example of A-minor, the tritone a-d# stands out as it pulls against the tonic. That's what metal bands always pick.

So glad I found your channel! No one else is talking about metal music theory! Thank you for what you are doing 🙏🏻 I’m subscribed and will be along for this journey 🤘 If I may humbly suggest a video idea, I’d love to learn more about the theory of building powerful breakdowns that are so prevalent in modern metal. (Like WTF is going on in a Knocked Loose song) I know it relies heavily on Phrygian normally, but would be good to learn more, especially how to approach the rhythms.
@darkindustry8 күн бұрын
Hey Derrick, glad you're finding the content useful! Breakdowns are a big topic, it'd take both a songwriting and theoretical approach to cover them fully in a series of videos. But don’t worry, I'll make sure to touch on the rhythmic basics in one of the upcoming video. Thanks for the idea! Also, when I finish this series, I'll move to 'songwriting', so you'll have the other part covered too! 🤘

Much of metal music does not even conform to a key, I think the drop tunings has ruined hard rock / metal and made it sterile and boring😮
@darkindustry18 күн бұрын
Although some metal songs may have frequent key changes (modulations), the genre definitely is tonal. Metal adheres to a key and possesses a tonal logic. If music lacks a key, it is considered atonal, and I’m certain that metal is not an atonal genre. Perhaps what you’re suggesting is that drop tunings can make metal feel less melodic or harmonically rich. And yes, rock and metal music can be boring, but I guess that can be true of any genre.

The latter thing you mentioned was one of reasons I came to make this video. My goal was to encourage musicians to allow the influence to flow through as it should. One of my students gave up an amazing riff because it was supposedly a Trivium rip-off.... see?

I have bad ear but down picks sounds more "agressive" but you are right, you cant sell millions of albums and fill stadiums with bad music
@matejklucka6843 Жыл бұрын
You say there is no difference between down-picking and alternate picking on a song like Seek and Destroy. There is no difference in sound because in the riff you've played, there are no more then 1 string sounding at the same time. That disapproves your point as what you're saying will not hold any ground with songs like Master of puppets, which you've actually played in this video, but only down-picked, or even Enter Sandman.
@milosdamjanovic Жыл бұрын
i feel like hes not saying there is no difference, just that it doesnt matter that much
@darkindustry Жыл бұрын
Actually, I said exactly the opposite to your comment, bro: there IS the difference between down-picking and alternate. I even titled it A:B comparison to avoid confusion. My point was the following: *the riff was so marvelously crafted that you can't possibly ruin it even with a 'wrong' playing style. I'll quote myself "the riff still sounds great".*
@jakkhazzard Жыл бұрын
Dude..neither of those are correct.

the 1900s were the 20th century, not the 19th as you said in the video. You start counting from 0, so 0-100 AD were the first century. Meaning 2000+ is actually the 21st century, 1900+ is 20th... and so on
@darkindustry Жыл бұрын
Bro, you are so right, I made a typo. I should have typed 1892, and not 1982 like I did. So yeah, Tarrega did publish his piece in the 19th century, I said it correctly, but I filled in the wrong year. Thx for pointing it out, I'll be more careful. Still one of my first videos 🤘

You don't have to be in drop tuning to be heavy A standard is just as heavy as Drop A
@darkindustry Жыл бұрын
Interestingly, the density of fourth between a-d in A standard is pretty much the same as the density of fifth between a-e in Drop A. So yeah, both will pretty much rock it. But isn't it intriguing? You got the interval of fourth vs fifth and they sound identical in terms of sound density! Even though we're talking a whole step difference.
