He influenced me to train with steel from reading about him re: knuckle conditioning many years back. I've never had to hit someone in combat situation but I'm informed that it hurts when ever people wish to do that knuckle tap thing as way as a greeting, so I guess the training has paid off. His passing must have left a void to his students.

Nope, incorrect. "Tao" is the old 1912 Wade-Giles romanization of the word 道。It has been rejected as inaccurate and replaced by the Pinyin system of romanization of the word as "Dao". Wade-Giles was abandoned in 1979. "Dao" is more accurate to the Mandarin pronunciation of the word. "Tao" is only used by non-Mandarin speakers that don't have any experience with the language. Once you start learning Mandarin, Pinyin tends to make a lot more sense. If you take a listen to Master Yuan in the video he always pronounces it as "Daoist" and "Daoism" with the "D" sound and not a "T" sound. As a native Mandarin speaker and a Daoist Master, I think he's probably correct. 😉

ChatGPT Says: this video is NOT accurate Information, Bodhidharma only brought to China the Breathing & Yogic techniques referred to as Qigong or Prana Exercises, these were not Martial techniques whatsoever.... the actual Combat techniques were Developed " INDEPENDENTLY" by Shaolin Monks Studying and Observing the fighting techniques of certain animals... and thus they developed certain Combative animal styles, many of which were used to defend the temple as well as to bodyguard various Emperor's throughout China's dynastic history....These Animal styles have no connection to Kalaripayattu (Sword & Shield) whatsoever, Nor is there any connection of Indian Mud Wrestling (Pehlwani) to the Animal Styles developed by the Shaolin Temple. Bodhidharma did not bring any Combat styles to China, Bodhidharma only Introduced the Prana Breathing and Yogic exercises that came in the form of Vajrayana Buddhism.... These Combative animal styles that were developed INDEPENDENTLY by the Shaolin Monks were non-existent in India because the animals they were studying at that time period did not exist in India.

Well ChatGPT must not be very good at watching my video. Because I say exactly what ChatGPT did in it. History is not accurate at all for these ancient times in China. So, I would call it a semi-historical legendary account that Bodidharma found the monks in the temple in poor health once he arrived there. He meditated for 9 years in a cave near the top of the mountain and came down with the beginnings of Qigong. The monks took this and it launched them on their path of further developing Qigong and using some of the principles to develop their martial arts. If I remember right, what he brought down wasn't even called Qigong at the time. I never said Bodidharma brought martial arts to Shaolin, much less Kalaripayattu or wrestling. Shaolin Martial arts only developed after he left/died. But what he did bring helped them on that path. In fact, a lot of the Shaolin martial arts came from other regions and villages all across china from visitors and new recruits to the temple. ChatGPT is not giving accurate information either. I wouldn't put stock in AI being an infallible historical resource. Because, as I said, a lot of these accounts are vague fact mixed with legend. Eventhough it's very touristy, I'm glad I went to the Shaolin Temple and walked up the mountain. It was a great experience, especially as someone who's trained in Chinese martial arts for so long. My Master was in the original Shaolin Temple movie with Jet Li, as one of the bad guys, and also a fight choreographer. He said they filmed some stuff there, but at the time the temple was mostly rubble. The front facade was up, but they had to film in other locations that had more intact temple structures. The gov't has been rebuilding it for decades now and it really looks complete when you go in.

@@DaWeiGongfu You are right, I completely agree with you, ChatGPT & AI is not all knowing. I never said Bodhidharma did not teach anything to China, Indeed Bodhidharma did contribute to Chinese Martial Arts, but ONLY the Pranic Breathing & Yogic Exercises such as Arhat Hands Internal martial arts, to help the bodies of those Monks…. However Bodhidharma did NOT teach the Animal Style techniques of Shaolin Kung Fu such as Tiger, Crane, Dragon etc… These combat techniques are indigenous to Chinese martial arts and have no connection to Indian martial arts like Kalaripayattu, Phelwani, etc… Furthermore, I am writing this message because a lot of Pajeets online are really annoying me Claiming that Indian is the mother of martial arts etc. These Pajeets are very Arrogant and boastful …. Kalaripayattu is not an effective martial art for Self-Defense or the Combative Reality… No one even knows about it… I don’t hate Indian people either, it’s just the Arrogant Pajeets online that are very annoying, and they fabricate and reinvent History in order to boost their own self-esteem & ego, even though their claims are based on falsehoods. Thank You for your response and Helping to Maintain the Honour and Integrity of Chinese Martial Arts.

To everyone wondering, as I read the comments, I have studied and stay for a bit over a year in wudang. (most of it under Chen) For the most part I was quite sad to realise it was heavily commercial place. Of course as you would understand when you understand how political all this is. How ever there is possibility to meet good training and some really amazing hidden gems. I would sadly say that if you want something authentic avoid Chen school as much as possible. Although many will tell you he's amazing I saw mostly a money hungry, show oriented person. Always there to make tea ceremoney with rich people, having lady parading around him as he loves the attention, etc (as you saw on the first clip the chool lack a lot of discipline.) In all fairness his kung fu is really great, just not an amazing teacher. Over all I will say if you're looking for a more traditional like you'd find in shaolin, go to Yuan but in my opinion if you want "real" gong fu, Find a master called Ming Yue. Sadly when I was there he was still building up his guanxi so often away for meet ups with officials or other investors but ever session he was there were worth 3 months at any other places. I don't know if he still have his school or not but he was one of the few true martial artist and seeker I would say I have met there. I Imagine there's many other good teacher too but of course I didn't have the time to meet them all.

Shifu, you're one of the best of wudang masters and I'm glad you took the time to explain this to us in English. It's true we consume far too much protein in the west that's why most of us are too tall, too stocky and too thick with poor flexibility and stamina.

Yes, they practice sparring daily and fight in competitions. I'm in the process of making a video with the first demonstrator fighting two people in a sparring match, back to back (not at the same time). The forms (dance) helps with balance, speed, and technique. A lot like bag work (which they also do) and shadow boxing in western boxing.
